I'm sure you've heard, but this top prospect is skipping college 1-and-done and going to New Zealand for a year. Article from Yahoo discusses ramifications, including this quote from an NBA scout:
[LINK]
“The singular difference from now and when this track was open a long time ago,” said an NBA scout, referencing the direct-to-NBA route, which ended in 2005, “is the absolute deterioration of the value of a college scholarship in the eyes of the players and their families. These guys don’t want to be in school and don’t care. The carrot of education has been devalued.”

Hopefully this means that the top prospects still wanting an education would give NU a little more consideration. Also if long-term overall top players go elsewhere or straight to NBA, talent levels might even out a bit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the NU education aspect -- prepare for the next 40 years, etc. -- goes a much longer way in football than it does it basketball, for many reasons.

Even if the top 7-10 high school seniors go straight to the NBA, I'm not sure it evens out NU's disadvantages. Yeah, maybe Maryland or Indiana or Michigan doesn't get that one-and-done star, but they still don't have the academic limitations that NU has. Which, again, means NU is offering a select few players who also have offers from blue bloods.

I will reserve judgment until the 2020 class is finished, and Bamisile is certainly a good start, but if NU doesn't get any more of its current offers to commit... there's going to have to be a change to the academic requirements, or this program is going to stall. The Tourney season feels like a long time ago. Buzz has faded. Hard to recruit without it.

That is overkill and over-negative. We've had some of the best recruiting classes the last few years that we've ever had. To say that "hard to recruit" doesn't connect with who we are getting. Remember, there are only 3-4 people a year who sign up (unlike football) and last year Beran and Jones were in September. So....let's see how it goes.

it is EXTREMELY hard to recruit to NU. regardless of the past recent "success"
