Minting of the penny has been discontinued.

I remember being able to buy a small gumball for one penny at the gumball machine in Revco when I was a kid.

Oh well, not much football to discuss right now.

It bums you out because as one gets older, you sometimes look back to your youth with fondness of some of the things you experienced. It does not mean you want to go back and experience your youth all over again. It just means that there were some memorable things in your past. The late great actor James Garner was asked how he wanted to be remembered. He said, "With a smile". That's the way I remember my past.

But, there is a good book I read that I recommend for those who have a hard time dealing with change: "Don't Look Back" by Christine Caine.

The nickel will be next. I read where it take $04 to make a penny and the nickel takes $0.14 to make. The dime only takes $0.06 to make. So, you are losing money making money.... The US is saving $56,000,000 each year by stopping production of the penny. I don't think there is any fear of ever running out of them as they produced 3.2 billion each of the previous years....

Yeah, they aren't taking pennies out of circulation, they just aren't making any more. Coins last for a LONG time. Paper money doesn't last long at all.

Guess putting in my 2 cents worth isn`t worth doing anymore - maybe my 10 cents worth?

Well said. I also think that as we get older the past stretches out further and further behind us while the future becomes smaller because there is less time. The past is big but the future is small. It is natural to look back.

Interestingly, retailers and restaurants are having to make plans for how they'll give change to cash paying customers. It sounds like most plan to stop using the penny altogether, even though it'll still be in circulation and customers can pay with pennies. Exact change back is a thing of the past. Some are planning to round to the nearest nickel, either up or down. Others are planning to round to the nearest nickel in favor of the customer.

Good comment. That is VERY true. AND, as I get older, I realize that the exit ramp in this road trip called "life" is getting closer and closer. So, what do I want to accomplish before I have to take that exit ramp? For me, it's to, as corny as it may come off, "love" more by 1. Leave as much money as I can to family members so that they have a safety net in this age of artificial intelligence 2. by giving as much as I can to causes that can leave this world a better place than it was when I entered it: causes being children, services that focus on those in need and dogs/cats and, 3. have more fun. Do all that, and at the end of the day, everything will work out.

Money isn’t real anyway. Surprised there is any actual physical currency remaining and that it’s not all electronic. Won’t be a problem after they’re done microchipping all of us.

This could explain why I keep dreaming about my younger days. The wife says it's because I've been researching my family on Ancestry. I'm retired so I have the free time now. The dreams are freaking me out because it's like my life is flashing before my eyes. 🤔

I do the same thing so I think it must be common. At first they freaked me out too, but now I enjoy them. Sometimes there is a complete story and sometimes just images. My family was dysfunctional so most of my dreams are about my teenage years which were confusing as hell.

I don't want to be helped. Many of my more salutary values arise from Nostalgia.
