Johnny Dawkins was fired at Stanford today, despite having a 156-115 record in 8 seasons. Dude made the Sweet 16 just 2 years ago. Maybe high expectations are why Stanford is in the running for the Presidents Cup or whatever it is called for achievement in intercollegiate athletics every year.

He reached the NCAA once in 8 years, as opposed to their history of making it pretty much every year under Montgomery and Johnson.

I think the standards have to be different for a guy inheriting a winning tradition versus a guy trying to create one more or less from scratch.

Firing Carmody did not say that we have higher standards?

Should we fire Collins? I don't get your point.

I'm saying I am surprised that Dawkins was fired. He made the tourney, his kids seem to stay out of trouble, and he has a decent career record. Getting fired for making the Tourney just once in 8 years seems harsh.

And BTW, in Montgomery's first 8 seasons he made the Tournament 1 more time than Dawkins, and lost in the first round both times.......

Getting to the tourney once during 8 years at an established program is quite bad. Stanford hadn't been anywhere since the 40s before Montgomery so he got more time.

I understand. Each coach is different, and Montgomery had a great run at SU. Will the Cardinal find another Montgomery? Or another Dawkins? Time will tell.

The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Stanford is targeting former Stanford big man and current Warriors' assistant Jaron Collins

It's that type of thinking that is behind any sympathy for Carmody getting axed. Stanford made the right decision. The program was not improving. If Collins fails to get us to the NCAAs in the next couple years, we should considering trying someone else too. If he gets us there, but then we come back down with no clarity on getting back, we should also move on. I don't think that is going to be a problem though.

I think our staff is doing a great job. I would not advocate for getting rid of someone; however, Let's say someone did leave for a low level head coaching job... let's say Loyola or Western Illinois opened up... or something lower like Chicago State. Collins, Dawkins, James, the other of Gates/Baldwin with a Head Coach Emeritus sounds like

If Collins gets NU to the tourney, he will get them there multiple times. He is a good enough recruiter that I agree with you that there is really no reason worry about this. Collins has given out his first round of offers for 2017 and I can say that after watching the film of each kid, I'd taken any combination of the 7 players he has offered. All would be an upgrade over the roster Collins inherited in terms of athleticism.

I'll tell you what's worse. Losing to Colorado twice in the same year which is what Stanford did this year with a loaded roster.

I wonder if Kodye Pugh rethinks his commitment.
