I'm up in Oregon. The totality will be in Salem, OR about 30 miles from here.

We will be able to view 99.944%.

Here's the question: would you travel 30 miles into the capital of Oregon (Salem) to view at 100% ... risking accidents, rush hour traffic, out of towners who flocked to Oregon for a glimpse etc. or is 99.944% good enough?

PS>CCR (Wilson Picket song) proclaim 99 1/2 just won't do...but how about the extra .44 basis points? We're more pragmatic!

99.9% of an eclipse is not 99.9% of the experience. If you are 30 miles from Totality, go. If you think Salem will be too crowded, go to another point on the path of totality.

I stocked up on lots of bread, peanut butter and water and also filled up about 30 gas cans.
Gave my generator a dry run too today.

I'm ready.

Yup...it's also the new slogan of the Alt R: We're more pure than Ivory Snow- 99 44/100.

Goddammit!!!!

My 5/6 year old memories are awful. i won't get mad at this, but if you ruin Jessica Fletcher's Cabot Cove or Scrooge McDuck's Duckburg I will be uncontrollably angry!

An article by some science guy on MSN said that if you are viewing a total eclipse, you can look at it without the glasses during the minute, minute and a half of totality Once it begins to be non total the protection is a must

Man does that not sound like a good idea! Wouldn't look for a second without protection.

that is what I always thought, no way you should look at it.....anyway, as I was typing this, some scientist just said
it again on channel 12 news....so it must be ok...... in NJ, it is not 100% so you cannot do it.

a google search on eclipse had this:

Can I look at the sun at any time during the eclipse?
You can look at the sun during the eclipse while wearing certified eclipse glasses, welding glass (level 14) or other filters. You can look at the sun without the protection ONLY during the two minutes or so when the moon completely blocks out the sun. Only look at the sun without glasses if you live in the area of totality – a narrow strip of the country where the sun will be completely blocked out.
For the rest in the area where the sun is only partially blocked out, keep the glasses on. Do not look at the partially blocked sun without them.

How many reports will we hear of people either going blind or suffering permanent eye damage from watching the eclipse?

say you can stay home see a 99% percent nikked young Charlize Theron with a small bikini on, or you can travel 30 miles and she'll be "total eclipse" for you for a full 2 mins.

as with the sun eclipse, there's a big difference between the 99% and the 100% experience.

if you're 30 miles from 100%, you're crazy not to go.
