why do you take such personal offense at anything that could be construed as negative towards Tesla? it's the same type regulation that was talked about when the Prius was the green car of choice and applies to all cars.

Explain this latest Boombox recall. How is it any different from driving with the stereo turned up? I know you can't possibly take sides with Tesla. This should be good.
Boombox is external speakers playing outside the car. You sitting in your car with the music cranked is supposed to stay inside the car. The pedestrian warning system is an external sound. They should not be mixed. There. Explained. Man, you get severely butthurt over this stuff.
not just an EV problem, or even just an auto industry problem, but considering the highly publicized chip shortage issues with auto manufacturers...yikes.

Tax dollars hard at work. Forget about that rear seatbelt warning where people actually die. Maybe NHTSA needs another decade to think about that one.
How many people are going to turn away from Tesla now due to the steering yoke? I hate the idea, I like to drive my cars and my fave hand position is 12 o'clock when cruising.

The yoke is one of the dumbest "innovations" in automotive tech in the last 10 years.
My guess is that it goes away or becomes optional. I’m not a fan
I have some mild interest in the new Tesla Roadster prototype, should it ever materialize. Only Tesla car design I like, plus kick *** specs.
Having said that, if the Roadster were delivered with a yoke, I would rule it out unless, maybe, some aftermarket company already had a proper wheel for the Roadster ready to go. And even then, I’m not rolling in money, so given the Roadster’s presumed price, having to correct a serious engineering flaw like that with some aftermarket parts would probably eliminate it from consideration.
Gimmicks are great when they actually make sense. A yoke on a road car is stupid. It’s mechanically unsound. It’s would be the equivalent of some kid putting a racing sticker on his car to make it “look” faster, except the sticker doesn’t actually make the car worse and the yoke does.
It’s something nobody who takes driving seriously would contemplate. I’ve read reviewers comments on it, trying to be open-minded. It’s hilarious. One guy said, you kind of get used to it. It’s a freaking steering wheel, one should not need to “kind of get used to it”.
Yoke in a race car with a race car‘s much smaller steering ratio? No problem. Otherwise it’s flat out stupid. It’s a case of reinventing the wheel only to come up with something far worse.

Yoke is in the S and X, not the 3 or Y.
Tesla does not have a demand problem.
From everything I've heard, once you experience the performance of the Model S Plaid, the last thing on your mind is the yoke.
If the yoke is the only option on an S Plaid... I'll never want the experience. A yoke is a deal breaker for me on any car.

So you don’t think I’m picking on Tesla, you could take any road car on the planet, any high end supercar from any brand, and if it had a yoke, it would be the only thing on my mind. I’d take it if you gave it to me, then I’d sell it and buy something less stupid.
It has nothing to do with aesthetics. It’s just mechanically moronic.
In fact, the more performant the car, the better the turn in, the better the mid-corner mechanical and aero grip, the better it puts down power exiting corners, the more stupid a yoke would be.
Not saying they have a demand problem right now but I can't help but feel like this is their crystal Pepsi moment. I was legitimately considering an S and then I saw the stupid yoke and it's dead to me. Besides the u turn issues, I legitimately can't see myself driving for extended periods without my hand at 12 o'clock.
I hate the shape of the x, and the y has the same dumb interior as the 3. I just can't stand having a center console screen with the information... I want a screen or at least a HUD in front of me with that information. Feel the same about any other car that has center console speedometers. Just hate it.

Hate to break it to you, but central touch screen display is where the industry is going. It's a copy cat game right now.
Plenty of people **** on the iPhone saying no one would want a touch screen rather than keys, yet here we are. It's a breeze to get used to and I'd never go back. A myriad of dials, buttons, switches and gauges seems archaic, cluttered, and needlessly confusing to me now.

One of the reasons for the yoke is to not obscure the second screen.
Not piling on Tesla or their fans, and I understand what you said about yoke not getting in the way of the second screen, but I'm with the others who find the yoke a non-starter. It was the second biggest reason I eliminated the latest Cybertruck design as an EV pickup truck candidate.
You mentioned the Iphone. I don't recall the touch screen vs. keys debate. I hate Iphones and Apple prodcuts for a slew of other reason. I continue to rule out Iphone/Apple products for their proprietary ecosystem (an example of which is the douchebaggery of their emojis in their proprietary messaging that does not translate to Android phones) and their Lightning connector.
Tesla's yoke is seems to parallel the Iphone/Apple's design arrogance that endears Tesla to core users and fans but turns off a large segment of potential customers. This is kind of like a Coke/Pepsi debate, and neither side will agree with the other and argue vociferously why their favorite product is better or has advantages.
Just one person's opinion, but why not make a steering wheel an option instead of the yoke, and then somehow work it into the design?
I just want to know where I'm supposed to put my hand goddamn it! How can I look cool without 1 hand up top and the other out the window or on center console

4 months agoSometimes Tesla is different just to be different. The yoke steering "wheel" is an example of that. The downside of this styling exercise is that it clearly impedes safe driving in urgent situations. Signaling and sounding the horn both need to be foolproof and intuitive. The yoke forces drivers to place their forearm across the airbag in extreme maneuvers such as those that may occur immediately before a crash, increasing the likelihood of severe injury to the driver.

They went full-Apple! Fashion over function (mouse with charging port underneath so can't be used while charging) plus only a day or 2 of power in 1 charge, butterfly keyboard on macbook, taking years to add Qi charging, still using antiquated lightning port, not able to connect to non apple products, macbook hinge design has screws at the weakest point, ipad pro has no chassis so bends out if the box new...need I continue? Tesla are like Apple - they think they are the best and it is courageous to add this steering wheel or remove the headphone jack on their phones (it has nothing to do with forcing users to buy the new bluetooth headphones which are trash or their acquisition of the fledgling Beats brand...nah, it is because of 'Courage'.)

1 month agoWe bought a new 2022 model S with the yoke steering whatever. After driving the car for almost a month now I can honestly say the yoke is a joke! I am a big time car guy. Driving should be somewhat intuitive. You should be able to do basic driving functions without looking at the prescribed control. If the turning radius was that of a go cart the yoke would be fine but it takes a least a turn and a half for some turns with the yoke. You find yourself grabbing for something thats not there, almost making a pretzel with you arms and hands, and as far as driving with your knee once and a while so you can grab a quick bite of a snack... forget it! The yoke may be a collectors item someday because I don't see it making it's way down to any other models or manufacturers. I personally would never buy a car with the lack of intuitiveness but my wife wanted it so you know a happy wife makes a happy life...
If Tesla or Apple were having trouble selling their products, I'm pretty sure they would adapt. If their products aren't for you, so be it, but you also should realize that you're in the minority. I wouldn't be surprised to see other auto makers come out with a yoke in some models since we're already seeing Tesla's blueprint of success is being copied across the industry:
Increasing vertical integration
Mega castings
In house cell production
OTA updates
Eliminating model years
Central touch screen
Ventless HVAC
Front trunk
Infotainment
Autonomous driving
This is the direction we're going. And as with any paradigm shift, there will always be those who don't approve and get left behind.

Did you watch the video on the yoke? There were several items I thought about that could be issues that Consumer Reports flagged as issues. Safety issues. We don't have to agree on the yoke, but as stated several times, it is a non-starter for a lot of people for good reasons.
To say I am in the minority is an overstatement, without anything to back it up. People may feel compelled to buy from Tesla now because they have been the only truly viable EV supplier. That does not mean that everyone buying Teslas have decided Teslas are for them. As more manufacturers release options to compete with Tesla, we will have a better idea if some of their cute, kitschy things like a yoke are preferred.

Let me put the figures in perspective for you.
Porsche sold 41,296 Taycans in 2021. That’s almost as many as model S sold by Tesla in the last 3 years. Tesla never sold more than 30k model S in a year, ever.
That’s just Porsche. I’m not even including competition from other luxury car makers that produces 6 figures 4 door performance EV sedans.
