August is TCM’s Summer Under the Stars, and today’s featured actor is Robert Ryan. I’d like to recommend The Set Up, from 1949, 9:45-11:15 tonight. Ryan is a boxer who refuses to throw a fight; the fascinating thing about this movie is that it’s shot in real time. Ryan is like Mitchum for me, I can watch his movies all day long.
Not on TCM, but I caught Donnie Brasco again, on Netflix. Wow, a really fine film, tremendous acting. Anne Heche’s best performance, dang, she brought it. I generally don’t care for Depp, but he’s spot-on perfect here. And Pacino is acting instead of performing, you can tell the difference.
Katy Jurado’s day: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, 1:45-4 am Thursday. I like this one very much. Kris Kristofferson plays Bonney. James Coburn is Garrett. Sam Peckinpah directed.

TCM is my favorite channel. When I sit down to watch TV I will check out TCM to see what is on. But I do not like Summer under the Stars and the other times they show one theme for a whole month (like the Oscar month). Showing a theme for every Monday for the month is OK but the whole month thing interrupts Noir Alley and Sunday Night Silents. That said I will still check out TCM and look for TCM movies on demand before I watch a lot of other things.
