-having range only matters if you have a good voice to begin with. Kooks list has bono/bowie on it...neither of which have *good* voices. Same with diamond dave. Also are we talking about *real* range...or are we adding in falsetto?

-the problem with many rock/pop singers (even or maybe especially the ones with great voices)is they dont sing "correctly" and f up their pipes. Rose, W. Houston and Steve Perry are the most prominent examples.

-can y'all tell I'm married to a classically trained singer?

Another of my favorites is Joe Elliott. I don’t think he has an amazingly great voice like some others discussed here, but he has a very unique voice that I love. Def Leppard has a very unique sound I love in general. Nobody else sounds like them. Same with Tom Petty. He doesn’t have what I’d call a great voice but it’s unique and I love some Petty.

I personally think Steve Perry has the best voice ever. Such a great vocalist.

That’s not remotely why he quit. He quit when his girlfriend had cancer and eventually died. His mother also had serious medical issues and he took care of her as well. He also had back surgery at one point. Plus, he and some of the other members of Journey developed some bad blood. There’s a very good interview with him that lays it all out. There’s also a good documentary on him and Journey.

-nah, im right. Sorry man. I love the dude but he has said himself he didnt take care of his voice.

Maybe that’s part of it but I watched a 90 minute interview with him and everything I mentioned was stated straight from Perry’s mouth. He did not say a word about his voice. He did say he was burnt out from all the traveling and heavy schedule as well. Plus what you posted didn’t say a single thing about that being the reason he stopped performing. Trust me. I watched and heard him say exactly what I posted. I’m sure it’s on YouTube. I watched it on Ax TV. It was on again about 6-8 weeks ago.

-im sure it was a combo of all the things. Again...love the guy. My point was not having been trained to "sing correctly" helped to cut his career short as it has many other great rock/pop singers. Can't cover that range in the powerful fashion he did night after night...without using proper technique, or it will damage the voice. Thats all im saying...not dissing Perry.

Ok- I’ll play. My opinion.

Best sounding, naturally-soulful pretty voices then, rather than gymnastics...voices that convey their genre. Pure.

Marvin MF Gaye
Stephen Stills
Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
Rhiannon Giddens
David Gilmore
Linda Rondstadt
Joss Stone
Jill Scott
Paul Heaton
Ian Astbury

Naturally soulful list must include Steve Winwood and Eric Burden (Animals).

I’m from Cincy.

Seen The Who 11 times over the years, from 1979-2017.

They never, ever, mail it in. Always give you their best. One of the reasons they are my favorite band. If forced to chose only 1 album to listen to forever it would be Quadrophenia.

I think they have the perfect show opener in I Can’t Explain(those 3 guitar chords , perfect to kick it off) and closer in WGFA. An all time rock anthem.

As for Daltrey, he never really had the luxury of being able to sing a lot of softer songs to preserve his voice. The Who’s songs were heavily laden with vocal chord shredders. Amazing he held up as well as he has. I know he’s had at least one vocal chord surgery.
Roger has a bio out, and he makes it clear that the vocal monitors were NEVER loud enough, primarily thanks to Pete's Hiwatts (which caused him to get tinnitus btw).

A friend and I have this kind of running argument about ranking The Who/Rolling Stones/Zeppelin as individual members and as a band. It goes something like this:

Lead Singer: Daltrey/Plant/Jagger
Lead Guitar: Townsend/Page/Richards
Drummer: Moon/Bonham/Watts
Bass Player: Entwistle/Jones/whoever it is at the moment

Band: Stones/Zeppelin/Who

You can make a very valid argument that, at their peak, The Who had the best vocalist(Daltrey), bassist(Entwistle), and drummer(Moon), as well as lyricist/writer/composer(Townshend). And Pete was no slouch on the axe(all time power chord deliverer), but to be fair I’d have to put Page ahead of him. But Pete had the perfect guitar style for The Who.

Before I opened this thread, I thought it was about Paul McCartney.

Good thread anyway!

Hard to compare Page to Townshend as they have VERY different styles. PT is one of the greatest rhythm players while Page is more of a solo, although also a good rhythm player.

The guitar, bass and drummers for each band had such completely different styles it's almost impossible to compare. If you throw in Mick Taylor as Stones 'lead' guitar, I'd rank him and Page equals (I like MT's style and tone better, personally). Watts couldn't have played with either the Who or Zeppelin and none of the Stones could have played with either Moon or Bonham. Entwistle could have played with Page but never with the Stones. JPJ, being initially a studio guy, probably could have fit in with the Stones but he would've had to adjust.

My personal taste is Stones >> Who >>>>> Zeppelin (never like Plant's voice, thought the LOTR lyrics were ridiculous and just too heavy for my taste; understand that they're on the Mt. Rushmore of Rock Gods but just not my cup 'o tea).
