My favorite thing about the “open borders” narrative is that it doesn’t hold up to any level of scrutiny
I've been to the border and flew my drone in between TFRs. It's incredible to see lines of people coming across or just lined up to be processed.

I've also went to the San Antonio Airport and so them on the tarmac loading up. Also the bus terminal here that is swamped with charter busses to other cities in America.

It is an invasion period.

I assume you think the border is completely secure and that there aren’t 10s of thousands of people crossing illegally? And that there surely aren’t cartel gunmen crossing at night?

We recently purchased an home in Norman that we will be renting out soon, so I've been in Norman quite a bit lately. When and how did the homeless population get out of control? Are there any plans for the city to get it fixed?

We're about to have 10s of thousands of people travel here who have never been here before. Its not a good look.
I live in Shawnee, and we have a problem here too. I can say that OKC brings vans of homeless from time to time to drop them off.
I work closely with a lot of the landlords in Shawnee, and I know they are trying to drive them out. It’s sad, but it’s just bad for the community. I didn’t know Norman had a problem though.

maybe another $2 trillion tax cut for the top 1% will solve the problem?
maybe another $2 trillion tax cut for the top 1% will solve the problem?
Really? The top 1% pay 50% of the taxes now. The government and throwing more money away does not solve problems. The government actually creates the problems and then tells the people that only they can solve the problem. Another recent study suggests that most of the homeless, choose to be homeless, but it was a pre covid study.

I got roasted for saying this on a thread years ago but the vast majority of homeless are self medicating with alcohol and drugs. Most are schizophrenic/bipolar and are not being treated (for whatever reason). Find a way to get them to get treated/get them to want to be treated and the problem would be mostly solved. Some are so far gone cognitively group homes/assisted living is the only place they could be.

COVID????? Get real, our southern border is wide open and thousands come in daily!!!!!! They have no place to go!!!!!!!!!
This is not a political matter and don't inject one into it. Most homeless people are American citizens who are getting the short end of the stick from a society is getting more callous and incompassionate. Caring for your neighbor and those who are less fortunate is considered socialism by a society that is increasingly illiterate and dumb.

If it wasn’t political, you wouldn’t be here commenting.

The total number of homeless people was estimated at 213 in April, up from 106 in 2021... but down from 266 in 2020 and 347 in 2019. This is Not a COVID thing. This is a drug thing.

Anyone that believes the loosening up on marijuana laws hasn't hurt Oklahoma (as well as other states) is fooling themselves. The unexpected consequence is that the drug / cartel industry has moved from pot to opioids to make money. Heroin, for instance, is very cheap and plentiful now. These homeless can not do drugs in the shelters so they chose to live on the streets. The city of Norman supplies the homeless with 3 meals a day and enables them to keep living just as they are doing. They steal from homeowners to get money for their drugs while we feed, provide transportation, and care for them. This compassion is doing more harm to them and us than good.

Many of us know people or have family members who are drug addicts. You can not enable them.

Want to keep seeing needles and feces on the sidewalk of the many neighborhood parks in Norman..? Keep doing the same old things under the guise of trying to help the homeless. You can't help people improve themselves if they don't want the help. They want to do drugs in the street and Norman enables this lifestyle.

And I don't want to hear that it is happening everywhere... I know it is. I am worried most about my local community, my family's safety and also my property value. It is time to enforce the laws, pull these people off of the street and jail them where they can not use. That is all they care about and they will go somewhere else that enables this lifestyle.

City council and Breea Clark the old mayor, they made Norman a sanctuary city and other cities would bus their homeless to Norman as Norman was “friendly” and offered more options. Then the residents of Norman flipped out & voted her and many of her friends off the city council (Alex Scott as an example).

They trashed this city, going to take a long time to get it back on track

I live in broken arrow and we’ve noticed a lot more homeless coming from Tulsa. It’s getting bad
Other states/cities are encouraging the homeless to bus over to Tulsa due to the resources here for them. Being in the Bible Belt plays into the hands of providing more resources for them here than elsewhere.

It’s a sad deal though. I serve at our local homeless shelter and the executive director mentioned that over 97% of the local homeless population has a substance abuse issue.

It’s an unpopular opinion, but I think the solution that would bear the most fruit is a forced rehab program.

That didn’t happen the way you’re saying it did. It’s A LOT more complicated than that, and that’s why Biden never changed it back like he said would.

Yea it does. 3 million people have now came in to our country since the start of 2021, faking that they need “asylum”. Anyone from any country can get in whenever they want, that’s the literal and actual definition of open borders.

These people CHOOSE to live on the street and do drugs. Some are mentally unstable, but these people are also mostly using. Enabling this lifestyle is not caring for them, it is in fact hurting them and also those who can't afford to live away from the problem areas.

These people have to be forced to get off of the drugs before they can accept help and compassion.

I think we are all conflating the term “homeless”, or “unhoused” with what the people that are the problem actually are: junkies and/or lazy people that don’t want to work and instead want to panhandle and steal from citizens.

college towns are filled with sympathetic big hearted kids who want to believe - same reason a political party goes there trolling for votes
That may be part of it, but the issue is not apparent on or around campus compared to just a few hundred yards around Main Street. There is actually quite a bit to like about what's going on downtown, its really popped off the last few years, with this glaring exception.

And obviously so does the rest of the country, but I’m glad we have someone on here who does understand it. I for one would love to hear what you have.

A OkC cop told me they’ve dropped some off in Norman before. California and other states put there’s on busses with one way tickets and just tell them to get off wherever they want. Unfortunately no one in our country can get along anymore, and we can’t solve problems that are affecting human lives. It’s a crappy situation that leaders need to actually work together and come up with some solutions, rather than just passing it off to someone else.

I don’t like it either, but being homeless isn’t a crime.
True, but shitting on business doorsteps is (or should be), accosting kids and moms at store entrances with demands for money and stuff you just bought is (or should be), shooting up and tossing your needles on the street is (or should be), breaking into people's yards and stealing anything in sight (IS a crime), but the police are not allowed to do anything about it because of Norman's stupid City Council, which has voted to give them free housing, free groceries, free medical care, and free "mental assistance" that assists nothing. Norman has become a hotbed for druggies (thanks in part to the MJ shops on damn near every corner), bums, hobos, lazy shitheads who expect a handout (or twenty) because they exist, and perfectly healthy young men and women who could work but refuse to..

I'll describe a scenario I saw on the way home from the OU Medical Center just a couple of weeks ago. As we drove east on Reno, there was this "homeless dude" (aka, hobo) sitting in a lawn chair on a vacant lot, his feet up on a footstool, smoking a cigar, giving passing cars the finger, reading from his smart phone, happy as a pig in slop, his tent nearby, his **** bucket handy, with toilet paper spreading all over the place in the wind. The people on this board love to ***** about cities on the west coast and east coast, but I would like to warn you: this **** is happening right here in beautiful downtown Norman Oklahoma (and not-so-beautiful OKC). Wake up, folks.

In my experience, most homeless are not Mexican or Central/South American. In reality, I see them doing all the **** jobs the homeless (without mental illness) refuse to do. But it doesn't matter for those lazy ones, because they can just stand by the road with a sad sign and make several hundred dollars in less than 8 hrs. I offer food/water if I have it. If they refuse, it's pretty obvious what they are doing. If they are truly desperate/in need, they will take anything.
Several years ago stopped out in El Centro, Ca to eat. A young homeless man acting nutty on a bicycle rode up and asked for a donation. He looked hungry, so gave him a 10. An hour later, I was at a Wells Fargo Bank ATM when this fellow rode up and asked if he could use the machine ahead of me. I said go ahead, and he pulled up his account and deposited numerous bills. When he left he dropped his deposit slip, I picked it up to give it to him, but he rode off. When I got in the car, my wife looked at the deposit slip, and then it hit me. His savings account had 285,000 dollars.

Same in Santa Fe. Just moved back and it's a bigger issue than I remembered. Least by sheer numbers.

Don't have the answers on this one.

I used to empathize with them. Then they broke into my girls car and broke a bunch of her stuff, including a box with her first dogs ashes in it that we had just gotten from the vet. So now it’s **** them. ****ing bum crackheads. I feel like an old man but I genuinely don’t care about them anymore and think they should get a job like the rest of us.
If you think it’s as simple as getting a job you should watch the show “maid” on Netflix

Since you have the answer, why don't you take in some homeless people and invite them to stay with you? You know- show some "compassion" and "care for your neighbor"....put your money where your mouth is.

I pay taxes. I don't mind paying a little more to help someone down on their luck. That's what my christian belief is about and I hope people embrace that.

Your cynicism about this homeless issue is quite misplaced. Just because someone is down on their luck doesn't make the person is a junkie or a thief. Your comment exemplifies the ultimate callousness and indifference to those who are unfortunate in our society.

Who cares? Arkansas and Mizzou have 50 plus thousand of them in their stands every home game
