OT: How does Franklin keep losing these?

For kicks, I checked the VT vs Cal box score and absolutely nothing sticks out as to why VT lost. Grunk played a clean game, the team had no turnovers, they had fewer penalties, and had more first downs. As is Franklin’s signature style of losing, he has a lead in the 4th quarter and loses it right at the end.

I live in NOVA and a friend went to the game out west. I warned him that Franklin tends to follow up a loss with another loss. And that his losses frequently come from ahead. And that they’re always close, rip-your-heart-out kinds of games.

And listen, of course I see how we’re doing and we really don’t have any stones to throw—but things certainly didn’t get better for Franklin “doing more with more.”

You may recall that Big Game James told us after PSU sh*t the bed last season in LA vs. a UCLA team that fired its coach the week of the game, that it is very difficult to travel to the opposite coast and win, somehow ignoring that, the week prior, Oregon had no problem winning in Happy Valley.

He has it down to a science. And the worst big game record in the history of college football. He reached his ceiling…should have been gone after he lost the Indiana game a few years back…assume he got a pass because of COVID and Sandy’s ridiculous buyout.

Great, so we wouldn't have made the playoffs....Brillant. Watching this team is so much better.

This is like the crew of the Titanic assuring it's passengers that other ships are resting at the bottom of the ocean as well. LOL what a complete fanboy clown. Can we resurrect that "The one play that defines the Matt Campbell era" Thread you gushed over after the Marshall Game? That aged like milk.
I think it's precious for a self-professed PSU fan to worry about any other program when PSU is in last place. The good news is, the future looks worse. No 2026 class, a 2027 class that's 7th in the conference. No top 20 NIL money to acquire difference makers in the portal. Based on his in game decisions.....he's a wiz on time outs.....are you still feeding us the garbage that Campbell sees talent where no one else does and then "coaches em up?" LOLLOLLOLLOL
This coach paid 30 million for a roster that:
Has no edge rusher....therefore no pass rush without blitzing and subjecting the D to be carved up
Has 1 competent linebacker
Not a single above average running back-
Some of the worst and least athletic DTs I've ever seen at PSU
A defense that is unathletic and slower in lateral pursuit than any in recent memory.....but the good news is you can run right at them too (Northwestern).
Brought 24 Cyclones to PSU of which perhaps 5 or 6 belong in the Big Ten.
Hang on to Franklin losing at VT. Because his record at PSU is 104-45. The only reason Campbell will be back next year is because 1. The AD can't admit he chose the wrong coach. 2, PSU can't afford to buy him out. By the way....at this rate, Campbell's record at PSU would be 75-75.
I thought the point of getting rid of Franklin was "WE DESERVE BETTER?"
But remember this above all, Bob Chesney wanted this job.

I agree that Kraft’s hubris won’t allow him to admit his mistake but I strongly disagree that PSU could not afford to move on if a new AD came in and wanted “their guy”. Just like with Franklin, Campbell would find another job and it would offset the total payout. AD change allows both parties to save a little face with the transition. With all of the new construction costs, pressure to “win now”, and a fanbase that has clearly grown tired of the product on the field, perhaps we can’t afford not to.

Kraft simply isn't equipped to conduct a nationwide search for a HFC. His first mistake was not engaging a search firm. Unless action is taken, things will continue to spiral out of control. No talent on the roster and none in the 2026 class with an average 2027 class. Luxury boxes we have.

I agree with you on that. My post was suggesting that only if we get an AD change would we potentially make a HC change after year 1.

False. Matt rhule had 0 wins for his career. Somehow you spin 0 wins as a better record.

VaTech fans should be learning just what they got. They were mighty excited about Franklin pre-season.

Franklin talks a good game, seems to recruit well, but ultimately can't finish games against good opponents.

You can’t lose 30 players to graduation, 46 to the transfer portal and a 20+ recruiting class and then have the new coach come in and work a miracle. That is on the AD and not the new coach. Of course a reasonable, intelligent and educated person would easily tell you that. You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken $h!t. There is nearly zero talent on this team, especially on defense and it shows. When PSU played teams with a similar talent level they won. That is how devoid of talent and athleticism this team is. Right now almost every B10 team has a more talented roster. The rest of the season is not going to be pretty.

My favorite is the excuse making for Campbell's roster after Kraft gave him $30 million to bring players in (more than was ever given to the prior administration). This nonsense that there should be no expectation about even being remotely decent after spending that kind of $$$ in the X-fer Portal is nothing but laughable spin in defense of Krafty The Clown. How Kraft still has a job is a real indictment of the PSU BoT and President - this guy has managed to spend significantly more money on a new coach and the New Coach's chosen roster with the result of making us many times worse as a team. This also ignores the fact that Krafty The Clown dismissed Chesney out-of-hand, who very much wanted the PSU job, so he (Krafty The Clown) could be made a fool of by Sitake and BYU..... only to have Chesney go to another b1g team (a b1g team that went 3-9 last year) and have them at 6-0 after beating #13 Oregon.

Kraft has done nothing but destroy PSU football and how he still has a job pulling down multi-millions is disgusting and a real indictment of the way bureaucrats run PSU - zero accountability for the creator of this crap-show.

It’s weird that you, as a self-proclaimed fan, are so gleeful about PSU sucking. Fact is, Franklin already achieved this last year. How little you forget about him blowing the white out and then following it up with a loss to WINLESS UCLA who had NO coaches! He got out-coached by no coaches! Then followed it up by losing homecoming to NU. And who did Franklin have coming back for this year? The same guys who just lost to 2-3 Cal? Things would not have been any better this year with Franklin at PSU.

The other fact is, this is less about Campbell and more about Kraft. He totally botched the post-firing process by letting all the 2026 recruits walk and hiring Campbell so late he was forced to pull together whatever players he could get—mostly his own players from ISU. This, I’m sure you agree with. I’d love to see how Campbell could do if Kraft didn’t start off his PSU career by kneecapping him.

This team is doing about exactly as it should…high end talent is absent…it’s key players are from Iowa State…recipe for turnaround = a lot more NIL $
face it though, given when Kraft decided to make a hire, if Campbell didn't bring a base of players from Iowa State, we'd be in even worse position. But some of the guys from ISU just don't seem to be up to B1G level. Number 8, for example, just seems to bounce off runners instead of tackling them. Also he was the cover guy on that option guy and he never even made it to that side of the field. Do we have anybody better?...apparently not.

Looking at things somewhat realistically, this year is done. And, we lose quite a few last year of eligibility guys after this season. So we either have a lot of good players sitting on the bench, coming in as freshmen, or we'd better be spending a lot of time identifying players from other teams who might be portal material. If Kraft was smart he'd be spending 24 hours a day lining up NIL money for 2027.

I'm not holding a great deal of hope, or expectations, for next year. There are just too many holes to fill all throughout the roster. We could have the greatest coaching staff in the country, and without players it won't make any difference. And right now we don't have the players

in hindsight, the biggest advantage of hiring chesney might have been keeping our roster together. Waiting for as long as he did, Kraft put all those players in a bind..the portal was closing and players had to make decisions on lining up spots somewhere...kind of like prebula the year before.

Exactly not mention a complete overhaul of the Lausch building and support staff all within 4 months. Insane expectations from a delusional fan base. It’s a three yr reorganization. Krafty has a plan and it hurts hard but is what it is. Let’s step out of our basement and get some fresh air. This to will pass!

There is nearly zero talent on this team, especially on defense and it shows. When PSU played teams with a similar talent level they won. That is how devoid of talent and athleticism this team is. Right now almost every B10 team has a more talented roster. The rest of the season is not going to be pretty.

3 yrs? LOL 3 YEARS of this and Kraft and Campbell are toast.

We've got bigger problems than continually worrying about Franklin.

So the cignetti model does not work?

Why didn't you post this before the season?
Thanks for proving my point.

And I never said anything in any of my posts that Penn State was following the Cignetti model. Because they were not. They were following the Kraft model of getting rid of nearly the entire team and starting from scratch. Basically the baby was thrown out with the bath water. I’m surprised any coach wanted to come to Penn State (as the old commercial stated) at that late date when it was pretty much too late to do anything.

Ive wondered what we really lost with the change. If this is true then I really have zero expectations for this year and next. I guess my only concern would be that we got a coach who didn't inspire any of them to stay. That's worrisome and it now strikes me as a years long rebuild, which won't cut it.

face it though, given when Kraft decided to make a hire, if Campbell didn't bring a base of players from Iowa State, we'd be in even worse position.

Agree in general that the ISU guys aren’t good enough. Pissed we are paying them as if they are.
