I’ve skied at Wolfcreek in SW Colorado. They always have snow. Everywhere. I’ve been in the trees.

The story

Please join me(note me is Ellie's mom not Sluggo, I don't know this people just thought I would share , sorry for any confusion) in praying for and supporting my 10 year old niece Ellie and her family throughout this unimaginable journey ahead. She had a terrible skiing accident yesterday. They live in Canyon, Texas but will have to be in Denver, Colorado for the forseeable future. They also have 2 younger children to care for throughout this recovery process. If you feel led to donate please do, but most of all please pray!

1/25 UPDATE:
Surgery completed, went as well as it could have gone 🙏 Please pray for continued healing and her ability to breathe on her own!

UPDATE: Planning for surgery tomorrow morning on her neck. The most imminent prayer request is that she can breathe on her own a couple days after surgery. Thank you everyone for your generosity and continued prayers!

From Ellie's mom, Jennifer.
Update on our Ellie girl. Yesterday we were in Pagosa springs, Co. on a ski trip, Ellie lost control and ran over a ledge and into a tree. She was taken by ambulance to a rural hospital and then flown to Colorado Springs children’s hospital (due to weather they felt like this was the safest location) They did not let me fly with her, so my updates for the next 6(ish) hours were by phone. Our biggest concerns at this point were her brain (she was wearing a helmet), her neck and a bleeding liver laceration. At one point we received word from a doctor that “the brain and c spine looked great and she would bounce back.” A few minutes later we received word that this information was incorrect and no one was sure where it came from, and she did in fact have an unstable c spine (fractured neck). The next step would be an MRI and CT scan to tell us more about spinal cord injury, and they would transfer us to Denver children’s.

The main things we know for my nurse friends:
1. We’re at Denver children’s
2. She is intubated, sedated and comfortable
3. She has several fractures of her neck, the biggest concern being a “craniocervical disassociation” that will need surgery. Possibly wait and do surgery on Monday and give her body a chance to stabilize
4. Her spinal cord has “compression” but is intact (praise god)
5. She has a lower brain injury close to her neck, but they feel like it is minimal and not the biggest concern
6. Her pupils are reactive, and she will open her eyes when we ask her to.
7. She has 3 broken ribs, a liver laceration (stable and hopeful it will heal on its own without surgery) and an (improving) pneumothorax

We don’t know what her future or her recovery looks like, and likely won’t have any ideas on this until they wean her sedation, which will 100% be after surgery, whenever we can do that.

The main thing we need is prayers, pray hard for our girl, put her on every prayer chain you know. Within seconds of the accident we had someone standing over us in prayer, and we know that God is so good. 💗

Very terrible situation; it’s why the first time my daughter got bucked from a horse (she bucked her forward over her head) I decided it wasn’t worth it. Prayers for Ellie and her family.

Sluggo, I was saddened to hear about Ellie's accident. Please know that you and your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’m wishing for strength and healing for your family.

Several years ago, my grandson Jobbie (12 yrs old) fell into a large drainage ditch and crushed the forehead of his skull on the rip-rap rock lining the ditch.
He was life-flighted from Wilkes-Barre General to Hershey Medical Center. The damage to the skull was about 4" in diameter, his surgery was delayed several days due to the swelling in the brain. Sometimes It is difficult for others who have not encountered a life-death situation to understand the anguish and distress parents and family experience.

Thomas

Here's young Jobbie @ 5-yrs later, today he's 32 yrs old and he's doing fine, I wish the same for Ellie.

Very sad, but please, please have the family contact There With Care. This is an amazing organization that fills in the gaps that Children's cannot do. They take care of the rest of the family. Food, car care, even a bag of feminine toiletries for Mom's staying in the hospital with kids. I have been actively involved and this is the exact reason TWC exists ands we all support them. Sending prayers. https://therewithcare.org/

Very sorry to hear about this accident. My prayers are with her and you. I had the best ski day of my life at Wolfcreek 36 years ago soon to be followed within months by the worst time in my life as my daughter was born with lots and lots if issues. Her twin brother was fine. She has fought through a lot and is the strongest person I know. Kids are amazingly strong. Your daughter will pull through and thrive.

Going forward if she needs any orthopedic work come to the Steadman Clinic in Vail. They are the best in the world.

Very severe injury. I have maybe seen one or two cases over my over 30 years of emergency radiology coverage (which included the busiest ER in Ohio). Hopefully the spinal cord was not injured or not injured badly. Children can be very resilient and if she was an adult she likely would not have survived.

I wish her a speedy recovery.
