OT: Major Air Crash At M. Ali Airport

Prayers for all. It looks and sounds really bad.

A UPS MD-11 was taking off bound for Honolulu when it crashed with 20K gallons of fuel.
Multiple fires and surrounding buildings are ablaze. A 5 mile shelter in place radius has been issued around the airport.

Gov. Andy is headed to Louisville tonight.

UPDATE FROM GOV ANDY BESHEAR ON PLANE CRASH:

At least 3 fatalities, and that number is expected to get larger

At least 11 injuries, and that number is expected to get larger

No hazardous material on board the flight

Two businesses impacted: Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Counterparts; all but two employees have been accounted for from those businesses

Other surrounding businesses like the Ford Plant and Expo Center are sheltering in place

NTSB leading the investigation and expected on scene at any moment

Firefighters from departments across Louisville, Lexington and surrounding counties are on scene helping to battle the blaze

All homes & businesses between Outer Loop north to the Ohio River have been asked to close windows, turn off air intake systems due to the smoke

Family reunification center has been set up at the LMPD Training Academy (2911 Taylor Blvd)

9:15 pm UPDATE FROM LOUISVILLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:

A fourth fatality has been confirmed; the number of people injured is still at 11

Officials are encouraging people to avoid any debris suspected to have come from the crash.

Those within one mile of the airport may notice an odor in the air; at this time, it is not harmful; air monitoring is in effect

The airspace is still closed; all flights tonight have been cancelled. Passengers are encouraged to keep an eye on the airport website for announcements.



Also, JCPS has cancelled classes for tomorrow.

Some reports have come out saying 7 people are confirmed dead. Ill be shocked if it isnt more. That was a huge crash swath of damage created by the plane and what Ive read, was 38k gallons of fuel. Absolutely awful.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said in addition to the seven fatalities, 11 other people were injured.

“There are more than a 100 firefighters from across the region still on the scene working to make it safe for everyone in our community,” Greenberg said.

Wow. I hadn’t seen that view. Obviously, the 3 pilots died quickly. The plane had to have caught fire while taxiing down the runway. Not sure what could have caused the fire. Looks like the left wing was on fire when they tried to get airborne. I watch Air Disasters, and this reminds me of the Concord crash.

If it had hit Stooges, the death toll would be triple what it is now. Thankfully that's not the case. It's a popular place for the Ford, UPS and railroad workers. I have a co-worker that meets some friends of his there every Thursday around the time of day as that crash.

An MD-11 reaches about 210-220 MPH at takeoff. That's close to how fast that thing plowed through there.
