Gary Patterson and TCU "mutually agree" to part ways, effective immediately. Jerry Kill taking over as interim head coach (glad to see his heart issues are apparently back in check...). According to statement by AD, Patterson was offered to stay through the season and instead opted out. Patterson had been at TCU for over 20 years and was one of the highest paid head coaches in FBS.

Fitz is certainly in no danger of being fired, but it's interesting to see how a few (three) consecutive bad seasons can change everything, and to be honest TCU's recent stretch hasn't been "bad" - only by comparison to a few years previous when they were whipping Texas and going head to head with Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Seems a bit like the Frank Solich-Bo Pellini story.

my guess is they’ll end up regretting moving on from Patterson.

I disagree. The program has dipped with the jump to the big boys, which is to be expected. Given the conference shakeup coming, TCU needs to take steps to ensure it remains with the big boys.

This should make Fitz sit up and take notice, but I agree he's 100% safe.
For now.

I wonder who TCU has in mind? I doubt they fire Patterson without a candidate lined up.

The apparent story is that Texas Tech fired their head coach last week, and TCU felt they’d be left behind if they were late to the search, considering both programs are looking for, if not similar coaches, coaches with similar strength in recruiting relationships.

TCU’s bad loss gave them cover to move, but they were ready to move on regardless.

good luck with that. The coaching carousel is already spinning out of control. UTSA coach (meep meep) just signed an extension to 2031, presumably with the appropriate poison pill protections for the school. LSU and USC, two programs with a lot of money, can be counted on to behave irrationally, especially LSU.

Sometimes I think the number one reason head coaches get fired is they are perceived as losing enthusiasm around recruiting. I get that. Hit 60 and for most the last thing they want to be doing is spending endless hours texting high school kids. That's the strength of a young coaching hire - relentless enthusiasm in recruiting.
