Too bad a sports network felt they had to jump into politics and political commentary. But they did and now you see what happens. I don't watch it with the exception of a UK game and then I turn down the sound. I really don't need them anymore.

"Now viewers are going one way, costs are going the other, and nobody did the math."

It's not math that's killing them.

I watch games. I do not watch the "talk" shows. Doesn't bother me what their politics may be (conservative or liberal). If there is a game I want to watch, I watch it. I'm a sports fan and politics has always been in sports. The difference now is the internet, social media, message boards, etc. gives the weak minded plebs suggestions and talking points about how they should feel and react.

If Jemele isn't the first name on the to be fired list, they are doing it all wrong.

They're just dumb. Why antagonize your viewership? No one who isn't watching you a Sports personality / announcer is going to start watching you because of your politics.

Here's Mark Jones's twitter profile pic - @MarkJonesESPN... and his description... "Proud American,Sara's husband.I love my country.@POTUS44,the greatest, even looks like me.I talk sports for ESPN.I don't go for the pump fake. Joshua 1:9".

I like Mark, but does stuff like this help or hurt his and ESPN's brand? I'd say hurt because there are people who would say, "eff that guy, not watching because of his views". Same situation if you are a Trump supporter. And hell, Mark is not a personality. He's a play-by-play man.

This has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with people don’t just turn on the TV and find things to watch anymore. They can watch whatever they want anytime. ESPN only has viewers for games. The rest of their time could just as well be filled with a blank screen. There is no reason to have all these personalities.

If it validates your politics though think whatever you want.

Wouldn’t call it painful - they made their bed and they have to lay in it.
Their “strategic direction” is driving viewers away.

Credit Suisse has given rev warnings for both CBS and NBC due to NFL ratings and the boycotts. Also do you think Skipper would have put out that memo if had nothing to do with politics. I do agree people tend to believe what they want to believe.

ESPN can reject the notion that they're losing viewership to other media and not for political leanings, but they'd be wrong. Hell, even Linda Cohn admitted as much, and they suspended her for saying that. Propping Caitlyn Jenner up as the Arthur Ashe Courage Award was a misstep. Lauren Hill should have been the recipient. Her courage and determination to play basketball with a brain tumor was a national story. And ESPN decided Kaitlyn Jenner coming out as transgender was more important.

Dumb.

You want to talk about misplaying a hand of poker, ESPN might be the worst example in history.

Live sports is the last great television advertising revenue in the world and three or four years ago they had a stranglehold on it.

Now they've managed to alienate most of their core audience and they are bleeding money.

Well played, you idiots. Well played.

You should have stuck with jokes and BOOYA! and having fun rather than Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith and all of the political crap.

What do you mean, Ron?

I think it's a lot of factors. Politics are part, but they also aren't. People are getting their sports elsewhere. Sportscenter was so big when I was in Highschool. That was everyone's feed. Now there's thousands. There's ways to stream the games. Some sports are going to other channels.

Like anything else, you have to adapt to rapidly changing technology.. and maybe that means not having 100's of 6 or 7-figure paying media members..

ESPN could solve part of their woes by putting two people behind a desk while providing relavent, witty commentary on sports highlights again. That's how SportsCenter became an institution of the sports world.

These stupid round table discussions about what some athlete said on twitter, a stats dork breaking down fantasy football projections, ex players standing around on a 1/8 scale court/field recreating plays, wearing suits with tennis shoes, trying to act hip (I'm looking at you, Herm Edwards), wasting time trying to cram the WNBA down peoples' throats, and on screen personalities feeling the need to share their opinions about pretty much anything, all need to stop, and I don't care if I agree with their opinion or not. Just shut up.

ESPN has a host of issues, but if they can save their flagship show it might buy them time.

Still makes my blood boil. I'm from the Cincinnati/NKY area so I followed the Hill story from beginning to the end. Screw ESPN for giving that award to Jenner.

The Bruce Jenner Heroic Woman of The Year Award or whatever the hell it was remains absolutely idiotic.

If he wants to cut his dick off, great I guess. Whatever. It is his. He can put it in the trash can and wear a bra if he wants. Let me know when he braves enemy fire to save some GIs. That's a hero.

Giving him awards for it is so emblematic of ESPN's decline that it is actually perfect symbolism.

You honestly could not draw it up better.

They cut off their own dick and then tried to give themselves an award and any person with any sense was like "What in the holy hell is happening here? I'm OUT! Let me know whenever you get somebody funny to narrate baseball highlights or sumo or whatever again but I have no idea what's going on here or why I'm looking at that dude in a dress' adam's apple but get it off my television. They are giving him an award or something? Dammit does Fox have the rights to any good games or am I going to have to put up with this **** to see UK play?"

More bad news could be on the horizon for ESPN. Staffers at the Worldwide Leader in Sports are bracing for another possible round of layoffs late this year, multiple sources tell Sporting News.

The next round of cutbacks could come down in late November or early December, with 40-60 positions potentially being impacted, according to sources. The layoffs could hit both on-air TV/radio talent and behind-the-scenes production staffers.

"This time it won't matter if you're 'liked' or not. It's not going to be pretty," one source warned.

You can be sure UNCheat apologists and ACC slurpkins like Jay Williams, Bilas, Greenberg and Vitale have a job.
