Can't beat Copperhead road for some good lyrics:

Now daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the mason's lodge
Johnson county sheriff painted on the side
Shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well, him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Then the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
Headed out to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
Love me some Steve Earle!

Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
Yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!

David Frizell….

"I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."

Opening lyrics:
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
Closing lyrics:
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young
(Charles Aznavour)

Once upon a lonely day
God came through
He blessed me with you
I'm never gonna fade away
Your love won't allow me to
Can't you see I love you?
We shall be forever two
There's no me without you.
(Julian Raymond, Glen Campbell)

Not “iconic” as in famous, but I love me some Tom T Hall, who was the ultimate storyteller. In his Trip to Hyde, he has these two lines:

Every hundred yards a sign proclaimed that Christ was coming soon
And I thought, "Well, man, he'd sure be disappointed if he did."

I didn’t grow up in the coal region of Appalachia, but drove around rural PA enough that I can picture what he saw driving in to Hyden.

Same song continues, "Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt".
Kristofferson lyrics. Can’t beat them. I remember hearing that song (Sunday Morning Coming Down) In my early 20s and realizing I was living a life not dissimilar to that. I made some changes.

Funny how a song just fits a moment in your life. Talk about a divorce song!
He’s got a lot of songs like that. “To Us It Did” sounds like he wrote it about my younger days especially the line “wasting time shouldn’t qualify as the nights you won’t forget, but to us it did.” Great young songwriter.

Margo Price:
I put a hurtin’ on the bottle
Now I’m blind enough to see
Been drinking whiskey likes it’s water
But that won’t ease the pain you put on me

Another lyric gem from Mike Reid: - Everywhere, sung by Tim McGraw.

Maybe in Oklahoma Drivin' 'cross the prairie
In Dallas, Texas Isn't that where we
Always said we would Like to try
Never did So maybe that's why you're on
Every highway Just beyond the high-beams
Right beside me In all of my sweet dreams
No matter where you choose to be
In my heart I'll always see you everywhere

They all come from Jerry Reed in my mind:

East bound and down load it up and truck it
We gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there
I'm east bound just watch ol' Bandit run

She got the goldmine
I got the shaft
They split it right down the middle
And then they give her the better half
Well it all sounds sorta funny
But it hurts too much to laugh
She got the goldmine, I got the shaft

There stands the glass:

There stands the glass that will ease all my pain
That will settle my brain, it's my first one today
There stands the glass that will hide all my fears
That will drown all my tears, brother, I'm on my way…

There were seven Spanish Angels
At the Altar of the Sun
They were prayin' for the lovers
In the Valley of the Gun
When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared
There was thunder from the throne
And seven Spanish Angels
Took another angel home

Heard this gem from the pen of Merle Haggard this morning.

But here I am again mixing misery and gin
Sitting with all my friends and talking to myself.
I look like I'm having a good time but any fool can tell
That this honky tonk heaven really makes you feel, like hell.

I've seen short skirts
We've got high-techs
Blue-collared boys and rednecks
And we got lovers
Lots of lookers
I've even seen dancing girls and hookers
And we like to drink our beer from a mason jar
Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, I love this bar

Hey Uncle Sam, put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty started shakin' her fist
And the eagle will fly man, it's gonna be hell
When you hear mother freedom start ringin' her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue
Justice will be served and the battle will rage
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage
And you'll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
'Cause we'll put a boot in your ***
It's the American way

I could do this all day. I find song lyrics fascinating. Some people don’t even pay attention to the lyrics they just like the music.

It's where I drank my first beer
It's where I found Jesus
Where I wrecked my first car
I tore it all to pieces
I learned the path to Heaven
Is full of sinners and believers
Learned that happiness on Earth
Ain't just for high achievers (I heard)
I've come to know there's life at both ends
Of that red dirt road

Her daddy didn't like me much
In my shackled up GTO
I'd sneak out in the middle of the night
Throw rocks at her bedroom window
We'd turn out the headlights
And drive by the moonlight
Talk about what the future might hold
Down that red dirt road
