Sol Mar is awesome and pretty inexpensive. I took my girlfriend there multiple times when I was at the biomedical health school. Dinosaur BBQ is another great place.

If you want to get fancy go to Don Pepe's. Their garlic shrimp is the best shrimp I've ever had and I'm dead serious.

really depends what you are looking to do. Dinner? Casa Vasca hands down. Drinks and hang out? Catas is a pretty good spot.

Mompou on Ferry St is a great place for a date night.
I go all the time.

Spanish Tavern and Fornos are good too in the Ironbound.

For lunch/local bars or watch the game, Bellos (a block from the train station on Market St in the Ironbound) and closer to the Newark colleges you have McGoverns and Killkenny Ale House.

Near the Pru Center there is Dinosaur BBQ and Mercato Pizza and a few other bars.

A block across Broad St on Branford Place, you have to try Hobby's Deli at least once, old school Jewish style deli (corned beef/pastrami/etc).

A new burger/bar joint called Burg is supposed to open in Military Park soon, supposed to have a top chef.

Krug's is def the best place downneck!! Your aunt has the best hamburgers on the planet. Used to work on Paris St. and Krug's is responsible for about 10 lbs. of my new found girth. Recommend highly!

Definately not a first day kind of place, but for a fun night with a steady girl, it's a true ironbound experience. For a truly great time, head there on Saint Patricks day!
Definitely the place to experience Down Neck. It appears to have mellowed over the years. It had a lot more "atmosphere" during my high school days.

Recently I ended up going to Brasilia Grill after asking the boards rodizio opinion. Had a great time as it was Samba night which is every other Friday I think. It was pretty good rodizio with free entertainment.
