Not much longer. I guess he’ll retire now that he has the record? Not up to speed in his thinking, if it has been expressed.

It seems that there’s nothing more that he needs to accomplish.

It's an awesome accomplishment, and he is one of the greatest. The fact that he broke Gretzky's record in almost the same number of games is kinda cool.

But....he is twelve hundred assists behind Gretzky, so if there's any doubt Gretzky remains The Great One.....think about scoring that many goals and nearly 2000 assists.

You gotta count the Stanley Cups also. Both Gretzky and Crosby >>> Ovechkin. I’m an NHL dummy but I do know enough.

But Ovechkin was the best player on a Stanley Cup winner plus he has the record for goals scored. He wasn’t Honus Wagner but he was 100% a great player.

Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has total points…it’s unbelievable.

Great point. Gretzky was all time greatest hockey player ever.

All the credit to the guy. Amazing he’s still scoring at the clip he is at his age. I would say if Mike Bossy was able to play in this era- without all the cross checking, tackling, mugging- that caused his back issues he would have put this record out of reach.

Either he or Lemieux, they are 1-2 in goals per game average @ 0.75/game. Mario would have done it without all of his injuries/cancer IMO.

A healthy Lemieux would have put everything out of reach for everybody, I think. Good point. Also, if he didn’t play with low rent players for the first 7 or so years of his career. As time goes by I tend to side with Lemieux as the best player ever.

one of the most insane sports facts is that if Gretzky had not scored a single goal he'd still be career points leader in NHL

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts what a great Christmas we all would have. Check out how many combined goals and assists Gretzky has vs everyone else and get back to me. By the way, in response to another poster’s comments about Bossy getting “mugged” when he played, Gretzky did too. Gretzky is the best player ever and it ain’t even close.

Gretzky also had Kurri, Coffey, Messier etc on his teams, he had WAY more help than Mario.

Any more excuses you would like to make? Gretzky has more career assists than the next closest player has career POINTS. Just stop.

Gretzky played with hall of fame players from the get go. Lemieux had nobody for years. And he also got mugged, worse than Gretzky did.

Like I said do you have any more excuses to make? Gretzky’s numbers DWARF everyone else’s. Your claim that Lemieux got mugged worse than Gretzky is clownish.

You seem offended that my opinion is different than yours. I apologize for that. I certainly have no problem with somebody saying Gretzky was better. If it doesn’t matter who your linemates are, how did Rob Brown produce away from Lemieux?
As for Lemieux getting mugged more than Gretzky, it’s not even a question. He got mugged more because he played in the middle of the ice a lot more than Gretzky and because he had no Semenko protecting him (he did have the oversized punching bag Jay Caufield, but nobody was afraid of him).

CANCER, nah that has nothing to do with anything. Mario is at minimum a 1b. You suggesting otherwise shows how little you know about the game outside of looking at stats.

Scotty Bowman and others have 66>99 some have Orr or Howe over both as well.

You and the other Penguin fans proving yet again the truth of the old saying about opinions. As a long suffering Flyers’ fan I never liked Gretzky since he destroyed them when they played. It was horrible that Mario had cancer just as it was horrible that Clemente was killed in a plane crash. Your claim that I know nothing about the game other than looking at stats is beyond laughable. Obviously you never watched Gretzky play. I also expressed no opinion as to who I thought was 1b to Gretzky. So are you conceding by that comment that Gretzky was the goat?

Nope saying Mario isn't close is laughable. Saying he is at minimum 1B was giving you a chance at explaining your ignorance on the topic. Funny how Ranger/Bruins/Caps fans can have reasonable conversations on this but most Philly fans can not.

As an Islanders fan, I couldn’t stand either of them. One took the Cup from us, the other destroyed us.
If I had to pick the GOAT, I’d probably have to go with Gretzky but by a very, very thin margin. I always felt like Lemieux dominated games in a different way than Gretzky, despite their similarities.

Frankly guy I don’t think I’m the one who is incapable of having a reasonable conversation here. I’m also not the one who claims someone who disagrees with them is ignorant either.

And the excuses go on. Didn’t Lemieux and Gretzy both play center?

Yeah, good for him. However, I was at a bar in the DC area yesterday, happily watching the Phillies - Dodgers game on the big TV until someone decided to change it to the hockey game after he scored the goal. I yelled don't put the Crapitals on over my Phillies!!!! I got some nasty looks then explained how many of my neighbors were Penguins fans and I learned it from them and continued on how I am a Flyers fan and we haven't been relevant for like 30 years. Good thing the guy was in our group and had a sense a humor but was the first time I met him.

Yeah, what does that have to do with anything? I mean, if you watched them play, you know Lemieux used the middle of the ice a lot more than Gretzky did. Gretzky largely stayed to the outside and behind the net. Lemieux was a lot bigger than Gretzky so it makes sense, but to try to deny it seems silly.
