We have a wedding coming up, are on Day 4/60 of no snacking after dinner. I’ll update if/when I fall off the wagon.
Please do. You are off to a good start. Almost a week! I indulge more in snacking on Fri and Sat nights. That is when I let myself have some sugar like licorice or cookies. Had ice cream last weekend. Maybe you try to avoid snacking 6×/week over the next 60 days and give yourselves a break to indulge a bit on the 7th day?

Unreal how many companies are located in Pa!

Denver Meat Company Hippey Hot Digs, a staple of Lot 34 tailgate experience. Top notch!

Great map! I think they are locating the HQ/main production facilities of these places. But if that's not the case, they left off two big ones in Lancaster County. Y&S Candy (maker of Twizzler's and part of the Hershey Co in E Hempfield Twp.), and Mars + Dove (Elizabethtown Boro.) One to possibly take off the PA map is Auntie Anne's. They are now HQ'ed in Atlanta GA, and they are chain that sells at the counter, they don't bag a product. I think that is a distiction to make and why Sheetz and Wawa don't qualify for this map/list.

Straub is still around. It's not very good though.

There's a story about how Rolling Rock became popular back in the preppy days. A young PSU grad was tasked with designing a retail window display at Macy's in NYC.

She put RR Ponies in the hands of the mannequins, and everyone loved it - the display and the beer.

I remember when Rolling Rock was sold to LaBatt - who did great with it actually. Then AB bought LaBatt and moved RR production to NJ. Then InBev bought AB.

At the time I was doing a really big turf/par 3 project for a client on Jupiter Island - next to Greg Norman's old house. John Taylor is his name and his family owned the largest beer distributors in both Boston and Kansas City. Now he owns Yuengling out of Fort Pierce. He's a smart, rich guy.

I asked him what these companies wanted with Rolling Rock and he said 2 words "market share".

AB never wanted to grow the RR brand. If they did by accident, great - but that isn't happening w/out glass lined tanks and using Newark water. What they wanted was to was actually capture fans of a brand they owned for their own brands - like Bud. RR sales go down, Bud Light's go up.

What AB paid for RR was a song and a dance. A few big advertising campaigns of $$$ for AB at the time.

I fully expect RR to return to Latrobe some day. Don't know if I'll be alive, but I think it will happen. It will be bought from InBev for a "song a dance" because its usefulness is at the end of the road for them and they won't fear the "craft brew" startup in Latrobe.

STURGIS PRETZELS…. I believe one of the oldest pretzel companies in the USA. Berks county.
Tom Sturgis pretzels (and one of my favorites) are made in Berks County. That company is only 80 years old, and is an offshoot of and 5th generation continuation of the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery (In Lititz, Lanc Co) that was founded in 1861 and is recognized as the oldest commercial pretzel bakery. BTW, great tour of the tiny, historic building in Lititz. But not sure they mass produce their product anymore, like Tom Sturgis Pretels does. The Tom Sturgis product is one of the best....hearth baked. Their skinny pretzels are amazing! Not sure why but they are the best!

Just to clarify. You reach in to clean the poop out of the bowel although it isn’t always necessary. You reach into the bowel to help guide the rod carrying the ***** to the opening of the cervix. You are guiding the rod by feeling the rod and cervix through the tissue of the bowel. You then push the rod through cervix until it reaches the other side which you verify by feeling through the tissue of the bowel. Then you squirt your load out of the rod.

I hope you weren’t eating while reading but it is actually not any worse than what a doctor does. It amuses me what freaks out people. Hospitals freak me out.

Beer distribution, including the compensation derived from and associated competition, is an interesting thing to study.

Driving to Florida recently and couldn’t believe how many Wawa’s I saw; they’ve really done a good job of nationalizing their brand . Sheetz is missing from that map too - they’re from central PA I think.

Also finally went into a Buccees; like if Wal Mart had a baby with Waa and Cracker Barrell.
Buccees, great bathrooms, the rest overrated and overpriced.

I've been to the Buccees in Daytona. They're building one in Fort Pierce (much closer to me) now. Meh. It's a stop, but there's nothing convenient about it. I liken it to a Wegman's vs. my small Publix. Would I like a Wegman's nearby? I guess. It's a great store. Do I want the traffic? Nope. I can go to my Publix and be back w/ coffee and half and half and donuts in 10 minutes. It would take me 10 minutes to find the half and half in a Wegman's.

Buccee's is for American tourists, certain fans of their stuff (which I am) that go occasionally and stock up, and Brit reaction idiots on youtube. I will never drive by the one in Daytona and not stop though - mainly for jerky. Even though it's expensive as hell.

Boyer being missing from this list is a major omission. The Malo Cup is a PA candy classic. I grew up 10 miles from Altoona and they were a childhood staple.

Someone asked about Clark bars. Clark is now owned by Boyer and they are making the bars again in limited numbers. There is also a Clark Cup available in some stores (Karns, for example here in South Central PA), but they are only slightly reminiscent of the Clark Bar.

One of the things I will always remember from my youth was that massive, red and black CLARK sign in downtown Pittsburgh.

Driving near Hanover, you can smell the oil from the chip factories miles away
Sometimes when we went out to get in the car in the morning, there would be an almost imperceptibly thin film of oil droplets on the windshield. That stuff is probably running through my veins.

If we're including candy, you can't leave out the York Peppermint Patty - created in York in 1940 and once owned by my relatives. We would always have them at family reunions. The company was later bought out by Hersheys. And of course they were the inspiration for the Peanuts character Peppermint Patty.

Rolling Rock was a much better product back in the 80's, I thought it was a good lager beer, before they were bought out. But then again that might have been my college age taste sensibilities 😜

The Tito's sold Rolling Rock. A guy a played ball with married a daughter thinking he was going to get rich. The old man fooled him and told him make it own your own like I did.

There's a reason all these businesses are on the eastern side of the state, while the Western side is a tird den.

The second part of the story.....the guy was hiring for a large grocery warehouse. He was screwing over a certain group of people. He had to quit and high tail it out of Western Pa before he was prosecuted.

Haven’t been over to Buccee’s from North Huthinson Island. However, I would love a Wegman’s around Fort Pierce. Publix is way to pricey IMO, has the worst produce of any grocery chain I shop, and imports Fruit from CA.

Publix is for day to day and BOGO's. If you watch the online circulars, you pay less for Mayo at Publix than you do at Walmart. Same with paper towels vs. Amazon. You just have to manage your pantry. Veggies are fine for me. Don't eat much fruit.

For meat, I am fortunate to have a Doris' Italian Market in North Palm. Top notch, and good pricing.

I was at a party in the late 90s when a female friend was telling me that her friend had a job artificially inseminating cows. Being a city/Jersey shore boy, I had no idea how this was accomplished. I kept asking questions for clarification until she finally said, “She puts on a long glove, covers it with lube, grabs a bagful of bull ***** and fist*#@&s the cow!” I completely lost it and almost 30 years later it still generates an audible chuckle from me.
Alas, I’m hoping that doesn’t qualify as a snack food.
That was the year her friend stopped biting her fingernails.

Manage your pantry so soy lol
So you'd rather pay $8 for a jug of Hellman's than $4? $13 for Gevalia Coffee rather than $6.50? Have at it. Unless you're a billionaire w/ a personal assistant, if you don't know what's on sale and what your needs are, you're a farm animal. Not an adult.
