I'm tired of renting movies that are duds. Old Man With A Gun comes to mind. Any recommendations?

The trailers for Baby Driver and Atomic Blonde looked interesting, I will try these two movies.
I thought the movie Hell or High Water was good.
For you macho side Dave...'The Mule' w Clint Eastwood playing a drug mule as he needs money.
And for your sensitive side..."A Star Is Born', w Bradly Cooper and Lady GaGa. My wife went w her sister in law, they both loved it. They said, great music, good story and great acting.

If you are into comics or super hero movies at all Spiderman into the Spiderverse was the best movie I saw in theaters in the past year, and one of the top animated films I've seen. Keep in mind with 2 kids I mostly only see either cartoons or other superhero movies.
Bird Box is on Netflix only, although that doesn't preclude you from being too cheap to watch it.

Baby Driver was pretty good, it has its flaws but was entertaining. The very beginning will make you think "oh a wise *** kid movie" but just get through that first 5 minutes.
I couldn't get into A Star is Born or Bumblebee. Mule wasn't bad, it had a slow start but got good.
For people who like Free Solo type of viewing you should check out Tucker Gott's videos. He is a Jersey guy and makes really good videos of his paramotor adventures.
Of last year's movies that I actually enjoyed, I'd say (in alphabetical order) Atomic Blonde, Black Panther, BlackKKlansman, Crazy Rich Asians and Hell or High Water. I admit I missed the last few minutes of Roma, but it was great up through that point, so I can't imagine that it could possibly go off the rails but so much at the end.
Have not yet managed to see the Mule, Green Book, the Peter Jackson documentary or If Beale Street Could Talk, but have high hopes for all of those.
I won't say Bird Box was a stellar all-around film, but it was a solid performance from Sandra Bullock.

I agree with @SouthJerseyRU. The Spiderverse movie is probably:
-The best Spiderman movie ever, including Spiderman 2,
-The best animated movie ever, GREAT job in the way they turned this into a true comic book movie with the thought boxes, different animation techniques (dots and straight lines for shading) and even using different animation styles for the different Spidermen/Spiderwomen/SpiderHam characters.
-Spiderverse actually did a better job in starting amd introducing the characters and universe than how DC tried to do with Justice League.
Your kids will enjoy the hell out of it and you comic book heads will chop up onions at least once.

I rarely pay for movies anymore, either at the theater or on-demand, because there are more disappointments than not. Tend to watch most for free on airplanes when traveling overseas. Just got back from a trip today, of the new(ish) ones I watched:
Bad Times at the El Royale - definitely entertaining, a bit more style than substance but worth the watch and a nice cast of actors. Felt similar to a Tarantino movie. Recommend.
Papillon - Not bad, but slow and drawn out. Pass.
Fell completely asleep throughout most of Old Man with a Gun and didn't feel like I missed out from the bits I heard/saw. Pass.
Big Sick - funny movie based on the star's own story, romantic, but not overly so. Recommend.
On Chesil Beach - a bit of a brutal, artsy romance. Not bad if you like that kind of stuff, but I found it slow and anticlimactic. Only watched because options were limited flying the international leg, much better selection on the US connection. Pass.

Saw Green Book yesterday and thought it was great. Vigo was hilarious. Watched First Man today and was disappointed.

lol because they predicted a lot of snow, the Governor called a state of emergency, and all it did was rain.
I just finished watching The Green Book. I was very good. It was a fictionalized story about the real life Don Shirley and his New York driver/associate. It gets a 'recommended viewing' from me.
I watched Big Stick. It was okay. Based on real life Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily, the story of how they met and fell in love and worked through adversities. I thought the initial connection between them wasn't strong enough in the movie, I didn't buy in that they were a meant to be couple. More time was spent during the illness.
