I stopped by Fun For All Toys, in Penny Lane, to say hi to the owner. He opened this store in 1998, when my kids were four and three, so we’ve spent a goodly amount of money there over the decades. “Last year was our best year ever and this year we’re doing even better.” Good to know, this warmed my heart. We spent more money there today.

If you see a strange dude on the Rehoboth boardwalk tomorrow or Monday, wearing a black Dewey hat and sporting a shiny red nose, it’s most likely me.

If you can find a parking spot… same as Bethany, not enough parking

I have a soft spot for toy stores. My grandfather & uncle worked for American Novelty Works in Herndon, PA which was bought out by Creative Playthings in the 60s. Grew up playing with a lot of the factory flawed wooden toys.

I know the area well. I lived in Milford for several years and used to go to Lewes and Rehoboth all the time. My neighbors used to own an ice cream shop on Penny Lane until the rent got too expensive. Grotto’s, Funland, Penny Lane, Thrasher’s, Dottie’s, etc. are all places we used to visit all the time, especially since we had young children.

Unfortunately the choices for schools in Lower Slower were not good causing us to relocate to the Buckeye City area (C’bus) where the public schools were great but the vast majority of the people (insufferable duhO$U fans) were not.

Grotto is from our area in Wilkes Barre. Check out Gio’s from Clarks Summit near us. He is banging out a killer New Haven style pie! Has a shop in Rehoboth.

There used to be a toy store on the north side of Ship Bottom back in the 70's. That place and miniature golf were always the highlights of the trip as a young kid.

My mother’s family had a house at the foot of Dagsworthy Street in Dewey Beach, across from the Life Saving Station. This place is a special special place for me.

Cool story: my mother’s sister and her husband had a place on Swedes Street in Dewey, mid block Oceanside. My children are adopted and on Fathers Day 1995 we’re waiting for the call that our second child had been born and my eldest and I are walking on the beach, a beautiful day. My wife is with my aunt at the house, where we were staying. All of a sudden my wife and aunt are on the beach, waving their arms. My daughter, not yet two: “Aunt Joan never comes on the beach. Something’s going on.” We chose our second daughter’s name right before driving onto the Bay Bridge.

I myself was born at 5am on “a beautiful sunny day” on a Friday in June, at Fitzgerald Memorial Hospital in Darby. My dad calls my mother’s parents house in Washington at 7am., no answer. Where could they be at 7am on a Friday? Ah, of course, and he calls Dewey Beach. I am told that the party that night was the biggest ever at the Dagsworthy Street house.

I love that area. Years ago, my old boss hosted a national sales meeting in Lewes. I was skeptical at first, but it turned out great. She made it a Dogfish Head extravaganza.

Here's my post from back then.

My in-laws live in Bethany. The areas west of the beaches have seen growth like I never would have imagined. The population is quickly outgrowing the infrastructure around the older established neighborhoods.

We used to go down on holiday weekends. Not any more. Yikes!

I love it there though.

Yeah crazy development. Many people from MD, PA, NJ moving to Delaware for the tax breaks. In-laws moved down there about 15 years ago for retirement and since then the development in the Millsboro/Long Neck/Millville areas has been ridiculous. 5/24/26 all lined with new communities.

Dont even think about driving on those roads or Rt1 starting this weekend unless you are driving before 8 am or after 9 pm

Yeah, we looked down there for 5 minutes, CRAZY traffic. I love being an hour from Philly in Middletown., I think I’d go bat schit crazy down there, too isolated.

Development east of the beaches is difficult without flood insurance or a boat. 🤔

Was my summer job working at the miniature golf course in Surf City.
