The New Yorker had a long article on this. Bring back wooly mammoths?

“They had their chance. Nature selected them for extinction”
No reason to think they’d fare any better if they were brought back. It’s hard enough keeping the elephant population viable, it costs mega $$$$.

Exactly. Google Wrangel Island. Mammoths survived there until 4,000 years ago, but genetic isolation did them in.

I can’t imagine there’s a climate remaining conducive to mammoths thriving today. Dire wolves might do well, though.

How could dire wolves be reintroduced to the wild? There are no adults. Putting them with ordinary wolves might work, dunno, but then what about the gene pool?

The only reason to continue down this path is to show it can be done. That’s not good enough a reason.

Just imagine how much money could be parted from fools getting in line to ride a mammoth up Everest.

This is all so hypothetical at present. If the technology existed to pull dna from different sources, then you could engineer some genetic diversity…

Why stop at wolves and mammoths?? Find some Neanderthal DNA and bring back a couple of them. Then there would be no need to guess what they were like. I'm sure plenty of women would be willing to be incubators "for science".

Mammoth went extinct and evolved into VanHalen . VH is extinct . Cloning of EVH may be the next project.

WSJ article today said the lack of parents to teach behaviors especially hunting skills makes bringing back the true dire wolf impossible.

So the dire wolves will be just for show, amirite. Put them in a zoo. A lot of trouble for what?

I should dig up my old copy of Jurassic Park to find some pertinent Ian Malcolm quotes.

The large prey they used to hunt no longer exists either .

Bro mid 80’s most def . I asked him 3 times . Charlie thought he was jacked 💪🏾.
Wow. That’s all I can say, wow. Jacked? Shades of Indigo Montoya. “I do not think it means what you think it means.” Wow. The degree of delusion, off the f’n charts. What’s next, Abe Gibron posing for Playgirl?

I’m 60 and I’ve never heard of any of those guys.
Over / under is 65-70 years old for knowing them. Ernie Ladd was a big big guy, another Big Daddy Liscomb. There weren’t all that many huge huge guys back then so they made an outside impact. Bob Brown.

Abe Gibron coached the Bears immediately after Halas. Fat. Used to be a player. Real fat, probably a hell of a billiards player.
