At times there have been threads about what nickname you would choose for Rutgers if they hadn't been the Scarlet Knights. It was always difficult finding a "New Jersey unique" nickname that wasn't a "stretch' to explain. But my own choice would have been the Rutgers Revolution.

Just like the Revolutionaries, they would probably forever be "The Revs" in newspaper headlines. Well, good luck to GW.

And I'm good with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

In other news about sports teams from DC, the Commanders may be forced to change their team name...again...due to the fact that Commanders violated trademark agreements.

I don’t get how it violates the tenets of political correctness to imply that they represent a colony.

Usually it’s the colonizers that some folks consider to be evil, not the colonizees.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Just something to argue about and act like we have a stake in the name change.
:YesNo
For some what I said might be a revolutionary thought and they're whine about it.

Not invested in this, BUT the early colonists we’re aligned with (and arguably were) colonizers.

Rutgers has been revolutionary for over 200 years (if you remember the ad from a few years ago)

I just peeked in the thread to enjoy watching people complain about something utterly inconsequential to everybody except the organization in question, for whom it's only 99.9% inconsequential and only very briefly at that.

Where's the popcorn-eating emoji when we need it? Hm... best I can do is...

Should have gone with Windtalkers.

Still honoring the Native American along with keeping the Native American motif/look.

And the alliteration is perfect.👍

Hmmm.. interesting.. I get it, I think..

Colonials implies GW the Colonial.. a slave-holding invader of indigenous peoples' lands

Revolutionaries implies GW the Revolutionary General standing up against "The Man".

Makes sense... I guess.

But perhaps if they were going to make a change.. it is the "GW" that should change along with "Colonials" and rebrand the whole damn thing.

Capitol University Caps.. as in "I'm gonna cap your ***".

Why the change?
Why do you associate wondering or questioning something with freaking out?
Is it your nature to completely ignore an inconsequential change just because it has no direct effect on you?

Since 99.9 % of colonists were dirt poor, disease ridden people fighting for their families lives and freedom, why the change?

Because we must be embarrassed, ashamed, and scorned for our history and culture, please, get with the program or risk getting canceled.

The Revs? A symbol of Protestant oppression!!!!! Where's my safe space! And those revolutionaries were colonials, so they were oppressors too!!!!

Not only that but the American revolutionaries did not abolish slavery in the South, so I don't understand how they could possibly be associated with that group. Maybe they mean Castro and the Cuban revolutionaries, that would make more sense.

Yeah, thank you, Zappa. Mildone is one of my favorites, but I didn't think the characterization of my post was accurate. I was certainly not freaking out. In fact, although I think the reasoning is silly, I commented that the new name is "cooler."

I think the activists saw something associated with "colonialism" and freaked out in a reactionary way without thinking it through.

(and yes, GWU is on record as agreeing to change the name because it was "offensive," not for any marketing reason.)

I'm far from a MAGA guy, but some silly things are being done nowadays, now that everybody has an addictive internet stage. I've always said that we need to change every team's mascot to "Tigers" and be done with it.

There's nothing wrong with examining and discussing events, and the reasons behind them, so long as discussion is rational, civil, and consistent. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there's everything right with that...

Yeah, it could just go on and on if we let it (and we do). For example, we revere the "Greatest Generation," who really were great, but after they came home from the war, they didn't seem very concerned about how badly black people, including war veterans, were treated.

Nobody's perfect, no matter now much we revise. Sometimes it all makes me think of Winston Smith's occupation...

99%!! Holy hyperbole Batman. Plenty of rich folk were revolutionaries- Washington, Hancock, Mason, Jefferson etc were definitely not poor. Also large # of colonists were Tories who fought against the revolution. Benedict Arnold’s wife came from a Tory family. Intersting reference if you are interested is Tories by Thomas B. Allen. Fighting between Tory and patriot militias was pretty brutal After the war large numbers of Tories wound up leaving for other British possession, those that stayed were not treated very well.

Very interesting, did not know that. I will be checking that out, thank you, Hoquat...

ETA: I guess I should have known that, but I didn't. In history, we tend to generalize, and leave out the rough edges, such as what happened after independence to those who passionately did not want independence. It fits better into textbooks when it is in neat, tidy boxes. Thank you again for mentioning this book...

You’re more than welcome. The history we learned in school (for me 50’s and 60’s) glossed over a lot.

Funny. The history I learned in the late 50's, 60's and 70's didn't gloss it over. But it also didn't concentrate on it at the expenese of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation , Federalist Papers and Constitution.

Any truth to the rumour that the new GW mascot will be a guy in fatigues with bandoliers across his chest and a giant Che Guevara head???
