The name of a sports team is unarguably insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You, yourself, could quickly list a dozen things that are far more important to us all. I bet that we could put our heads together and quickly come up with a list of several dozen things that are far more important.

Conversely, I don't know that we could find too many things that are less important to us all. People allow themselves to be manipulated into getting worked up over some of the dumbest stuff and this is an obvious example.

Who actually gets hurt by changing the name of a sports team other than the organization that owns it and has to cover the one-time expense for the change? Surely there are examples of political correctness run amok where innocent people are actually materially harmed. Perhaps we ought to focus our outrage there, if we are prone to being outraged by stuff.

I'm far from a MAGA guy, but some silly things are being done nowadays, now that everybody has an addictive internet stage. I've always said that we need to change every team's mascot to "Tigers" and be done with it.

There's nothing wrong with examining and discussing events, and the reasons behind them, so long as discussion is rational, civil, and consistent. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there's everything right with that...

I wasn't intending to pick on you with my post - sorry if I gave that impression.

There's a subtext to my post that applies to, and will be recognized as such by, the CE board regulars. They have a long and sordid, if hilarious, history of blowing these sorts of things way, way out of proportion.

Was a Wes Unseld fan at the time. He and Dave Cowan.. undersized big men doing yeoman work.

I think what @mildone is missing in his responses is how this name change is just a part of a larger trend. And when people question the name change they are also addressing the meta trend that this name change is just a small part of.. a change that may seem insignificant but is part of a larger trend that, itself, is significant to all our daily lives... or could be so.

It's provable if you have any knowledge or understanding of human history. Do you think any people group originated in the land they currently occupy? That's what your proposing.

It has no significance of any kind to anybody except the one-time cost of effecting the change.

So my two questions are:

(1) Why not change since it doesn't matter?
(2) Why do you care, anyway?

If the reason for the change is political correctness, then, in this particular case, so what? Who cares? It's meaningless.

Like many people, I have a strong dislike of the trend towards overblown political correctness. But I have a much stronger dislike of anything or anybody that seeks to manipulate me into caring about something, like this, that has absolutely no meaningful impact on anybody.

We all have much bigger fish to fry.

It’s all fine. I gave up on arguing with idiots from Hazlet when I graduated from Cove Road.

Nope. Not missing it.

I just think that people should realize that overreacting to every instance of a thing that might be due to political correctness, no matter how utterly insignificant it is, merely encourages more overblown political correctness. It's a toxic blend of the "boy who cried wolf" syndrome and the "white noise" effect. It's counter-productive and merely extends the period of time in which we all have to suffer through this irritating trend.

Better to restrict focus to situations where overblown political correctness actually causes real harm. Otherwise, all the whining about it sounds like nothing so much as Charlie Brown's parents.

I’m not arguing anything. I provided clarification on what a colonizer is.

You made an asinine point to turn it into an argument. Migration and colonization are not the same thing. A colony is under control of another nation. So, no, we are not all descended from colonizers. And I didn’t call you a name…well not directly!

Does anyone really care about this? Is this really an example of things going too far?

I have a funny story about George Washington. A few years ago, my wife and I did a tour of “historic Philadelphia” with a private guide. Apparently, when Washington was President there was a law in Pennsylvania where you could bring slaves to PA but if they stayed six months they would be set free. So Washington brought slaves but rotated them out every six months. I said to the tour guide “But other than that he was a GREAT guy.”

The Barbary Pirates enslaved white Christians. Facts are sometimes a real pain in the ***, they get in the way of a good narrative.

By the way, it if you’d like an explanation look it up. I think you already know the answer. It’s like you’re baiting someone to explain it and no one is taking the bait.

Note that no one on here has said “Awesome that this much-needed name change happened”.

I’m in the camp of “yep that happened, move on”

While i don’t personally agree with all the name-change motives and pressures (agree with some but not all) why should it matter to fans ?

Root for the alma mater, the pro team of choice or whatever your preference. That’s all that should matter.

That was basically a rule in a number of northern states, I know that NY had similar rule.

Why the name change?
If Ford decided to change the Mustang to the Stallion I really don’t think I’d care very much but I’d wonder why..
Given the fact Crispus Attucks fought side by side with them and the huge majority of Colonists were dirt poor, sick and owned No slaves, why the change?

If I’m wrong and misinformed I have no problem being corrected

Also, while there are some good arguments for why this is unimportant, I haven’t seen a counter argument for why it’s important. Oh well, I’m sure they’ll be something else on the “news” tonight to get concerned about.

Seems a bit misrepresentative of the vast majority of those courageous patriots fighting for their lives and freedom.

Some might feel Colonials were the Tory faction of the American Revolution that wanted America to remain a colony and not a free independent nation.
England considered them patriots because they wanted to be ruled by the King of England and the British Parliament and fought against George Washington and the Continental Army he led .
The patriots fighting in the Continental army fought to end North America being a colony belonging to England and make the Thirteen Colonies an independent nation named the United States of America .
