:cry:I'm born raised Johnson County...

For the sake of Boyle County and Johnson Central players, here’s hoping all talk Saturday is about what happens on the field

by Larry Vaught

When unbeaten Boyle County and Johnson Central play in the Class AAAA state championship game Saturday afternoon in Lexington it would be nice to think the attention can stay on what just happens in the football game.

No, I am not downplaying or excusing what Boyle Middle School principal Steve Karsner said during a pep rally Thursday where he managed to insult most of eastern Kentucky with comments about Johnson County residents not being able to count to 100 and living in hollers.

Boyle Supt. Mike LaFavers apologized for what was said … and should have … on behalf of the school system.

Just don’t let this take away from the players on two special teams competing today. Focus on the game and the state title.

A parent of one Boyle player who is from eastern Kentucky said he felt the comments were made in “jest” but understood why eastern Kentucky residents were upset because he “grew up poor in a holler” too.

“I just feel bad for the kids,” the Boyle parent said. “But the real bad part about all of this ugly press is that the kids are innocent. And everything both teams have accomplished will be overshadowed by the adults.

“Absolutely I agree it was a careless & insensitive comment made by our administrator but tomorrow should be about the kids. Generalizations get us all into trouble.”

Very true and hopefully folks in eastern Kentucky will know not all Boyle Countians agreed with what was said.

But my hope is that at this time tomorrow we are just talking about Boyle-Johnson Central because of a great state championship game and not what was said at a pep rally. Players on both teams deserve that.

Eastern ky gets insulted but so do ghettos, cities, countries, Lexington thinks they’re better than any county around them and Louisville thinks the entire state is redneck except them. Paris thinks every city in America outside New York are uncultured rubes.

We all insult third world countries, everybody has somebody they consider below them. Eastern ky needs to toughen up on this and not be so sensitive.

But "everybody [who] has somebody they consider below them" is ignorant. Of course, those ignorant on a particular matter are always the last (if ever) to realize it. So, confronting the ignorance - not "getting over it" - is the best way to fix the problem.

Yeah that article fricking reeked to me of oversensitivity. Sure it would be a different thing if one kid from another county got called those things by a crowd while he was somewhere alone. But if the whole county hears that they need to be man enough to realize that talk IS about what happens on the field. If they can’t see that it doesn’t mean anything but one more public school got overrun with commies.*

Speaking of communism, actual Russians make fun of us for this sort of thing today.

Ok, well good lucking fixing everybody around you. Of course that’s sarcasm because you are waisting your time trying to confront something so pervasive in society that it will never be fixed. It will always keep coming, you’d be better off adjusting your insecurities but if you want to insult them back to show them the error of their ways then go ahead.

I'm not interested in fixing anyone or insulting somebody to get even. But, calling out offensive stereotypical statements is neither difficult or insecure. It's likely helpful to lessen the perpetuation of ignorance.

Look, if that kid level trash talk got you upset then you are way too sensitive. Can’t count to 100 and living in a holler shouldn’t psychologically damage eky but it does. Almost every state in America has a bad perception of KY and stereotypes are their reality. There’s no chance of outraging that away, I know the truth and don’t care what they think. Besides I know there’s people in eky that can count to 100, so what he said is simply not true.

Well, thanks, but I don’t feel upset. Then again, I never thought of pointing something out as incorrect as being too sensitive or outraged. If you perceived it that way, ok. To each his own.

It would be great if we could just have some standards about how leaders in a public position should behave and speak instead of pretending that anyone can say or do anything and if anyone else takes issue with it they are "too sensitive."

That's a middle school principal for Christ sake. Set an example. Be an adult. Teach the kids something valuable. No one that stupid should be allowed to be in that position.

The only thing more pathetic and irritating than the PC police are the anti PC police. There are consequences when you say and do stupid things. Or is he "too sensitive" to take responsibility for his mistakes?

And too Top it Off on the stupid comment made,

This year, on March 18, 2019, the Johnson Central Academic Team captured their first Governor’s Cup State title in school history.

That’s equivalent of winning the State Championship In Academics.....

Just quote me next time, you’ve spent too much time in the past being overly concerned with posters being passive aggressive to pull that stunt. What’s pathetic is everybody needing a touching bubble, incredible amounts of hyper sensitivity in today’s society. Maybe you should head up a Facebook rant or dox the guy to ruin his life because he savagely attacked eky.

The pain you suffered, you should sue and straighten that mf out. I guess I’m just tired of every single thing being blown way out of proportion, everybody is offended or at the ready to be offended. He probably shouldn’t have said that but it isn’t newspaper worthy imo.

I would bet a lot of money that I would hear some doozies about other races and other parts of the state if I was in eky, the only difference is nobody is moving to eky to hear it and get hurt enough to put it in the paper. So they’re not above what they unfortunately receive, it’s just in house so I guess it doesn’t count. Back to Boyle, I’m sure the guy regrets it and almost assuredly meant it in jest but what he did to besmirch eky is reprehensible.

I wasn't talking to you, or really to anyone specific, just the entire side of the argument that you essentially took in this thread. If I were, I'd have quoted you.

It's intellectually lazy to dismiss genuine criticism for stupid, unprofessional, statements or behavior from people who know better and should be held to a higher standard as sensitivity on behalf of those they've wronged.

If you walk into your bosses office and tell him to go F himself, it doesn't mean he's weak or hurt for firing you.

To use this idiotic, boorish behavior from this person in this capacity in this setting to rail against "offended culture" hurts your crusade. People are pointing out that he's wrong, hypocritical, unprofessional and embarrassing. I'm yet to see anyone claiming that he's ruined their lives or anything of the sort. He's just taking heat for his terrible decision.

Speaking of State Finals, I went to the 3A Belfry/ Bell County game tonight and them Belfry boys are the real damn deal. Belfry won 30-20. They were kind of like UK’s offense with Lynn Bowden (not the same style and not comparing the two) but Bell County KNEW what they were gonna do (Ran the ball, only passed once) and they couldn’t stop them. They pounded the ball with power and efficiency and Bell Co could not stop them. Bell Co QB was the best player on the field but Belfry was the best team. Very impressive fan base too.

You’re comparing it to walking into your bosses office and saying F you, Gonzo that’s not even remotely similar insults on the fujita scale. Never mind that one would be in jest while the other a serious insult. That’s my point is that people are eager to take it to the extreme, there’s no disparity here and that’s too sensitive.

I believe you’re a teacher and maybe you are very serious and I understand you preferring to be professional, he should be too and made a mistake in judgment. But did he really do the amount of damage that this thread will inevitably portray? No, and FEMA will not copter in water for this disaster.

People don't realize there alot of hard working, intelligent people and self made millionaires right here in Eastern Ky. I had a car dealerships GM in Lexington once tell me he didn't want any business from Eastern ky because we were all dirty hicks with no credit. So instead of leaving pissed I let him run my credit bureau which was 778 (which was more than perfect), showed him my $10,000 down payment, let him kiss up for a few minutes, then proceeded to wave goodbye with only 1 finger, come back to my dealership at home and let my hick buddy sell me a new Suburban. And I'm just a hick from up in a holler that works every day.

Boyle will kill them.
Boyle County may win but I guarantee you they won’t kill them. Johnson Central beat 3A Champions Belfry this year 53-16. I can promise you their Head Coach Matney has those ignorant comments on the bulletin board and they’ll be playing with some extra incentive. You don’t disrespect mountain boys and get away without a fight.

I lived in Lexington many years. Never have I lived in a city before where any hand without money is an invisible hand. I've lived in Florence, Kentucky now for over a year. Jobs are BOOMING up here. I love the culture here. Not the type of stuff you might see in Louisville, both good and bad, but definitely not the depressed, ignorant city that Lexington is.

It sounded like trash talk during a pep rally before playing in the state championship to me. People are always looking to get offended over something. With deep roots in Johnson County I will certainly be pulling for JC but I think this is pretty funny.

Principal of a school needs to be seen by the kids as being above making crude, berating comments. Sorta like a preacher needs to conduct himself better than the average guy. That's all.

As for the comments themselves, they only bother people with thin skin, poor views of themselves, the overly sensitive. The E Ky guys I know would just flip him off, go about their business and never think of the comment or the man again.

We should expect more from a Middle School principal, imo. Demeaning a group of people to fire up a fan base is not acceptable from a person who is supposed to be modeling character building virtues to preteens. It is not a matter of sensitivity but, leadership of children and setting an example.

I'd just take a baseball bat to the guys head.. How we holler folk take care of business.. Plus it's fun.. :)
Yeah, of course people who aren't from Eastern Kentucky are saying "get over it, you're too sensitive", etc. because they haven't lived it. Being from Floyd County, I've dealt with insults my entire career and most recently had one person tell me in a meeting that "Everyone knows that people from Kentucky don't wear shoes". Not making this up. To me, it shows the ignorance of the person making the remark and while the best thing to do is ignore it you still want to punch their lights out.

The worst people for this kind behavior, in my experience, are in Lexington and Louisville, of course.

Been watching HS football when I still lived in Eastern Kentucky in 1966 and Belfry was always good. Phillip Haywood (Belfry coach) was my coach during my freshman year at Prestonsburg in 1970 and he was a psycho maniac. A few year later one of his players was severely injured and because paralyzed for life. I think that changed him quite a bit but he knows the game like no other I've seen.
