I have a brutal case of shingles. Has anybody here ever had it? How long does it last? I started my second script of Valtrax today. Any help is appreciated.

First, make sure you get your kids and grandkids vaccinated for varicella. No chicken pox as a kid, no shingles as an adult.

Valtrax is important, so keep using as prescribed. If OTC pain relief isn't helping enough, ask your doctor about a neuropathic pain medication (gabapentin or Lyrica/pregabalin). Wishing you luck and good health!

I've had Shingles 3 times. In my 20's, 40's and 50's. Always on the right side up by my shoulder. Every now and then I get a sensation of a back stabbing for a couple of seconds. Each time I had shingles it lasted around 2 weeks. Since I knew what it was after the 1 st case, I called my doctor and was put on a script right away and it pretty much slowed it down. Never got the Vax since I figure my body has already had the little f*cker bug 3 times.

I finished my 2 part vaccine this summer. It freakin' sucked, especially the second shot.

Oh you have to get it every 10 years too, I didn’t know that either.
I'm seeing 10-11 years.

One small clarification. I believe the data shows that Shingrix lasts "at least" 10-11 years. Which likely means the data only goes out to 10-11 years and it's still working well. So, it's protection might continue beyond this time period, but we don't have the evidence to say that yet.

Gotta get the shot, anyone over 50. Had a mild case years ago and it wasn’t fun. Shingrix is so effective it knocked Mercks Zostavax out of business. Merck stopped making it

sorry to hear OP. I had it in my early 40s. I just had my 1st vax shot and didn’t have too much of a reaction. Bracing for the 2nd shot in December.

That was the tough one for me, about 10 years ago. Maybe it's better now. Hope your results are better.

Second one was awful for me. I'm due for Round 2 next year (10 year intervals). I may reconsider, but an older family member had shingles, and it was brutal.
Can you describe the side effects? I am scheduled to receive this. I remember my mother had it and it was brutally painful for her, so I will take the side effects trade off.

My recollection was flu-like symptoms, aches and generally feeling like not moving off the couch/bed for a couple of days.

I'm ready to ask for Morphine

My kids had it a long, long time ago. My son who has severe autism son had it 100x worse than his sister. What a nightmare that was.

Wow sorry to hear that, everyone should get the vaccine at 50.
Nobody ever told me that, Other symptoms I have; peeling of thick skin on both feet, numerous bumps all over my, head burning
a wicked headache, chest on fire. worse on back. Lastly short term memory way off. Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiences.
I knew I was really, really ill when I missed playoff basebell, and WNBA.

It really depends on individual. Got it last summer. Nothing more than my a sore arm for a few days.
Yeah, I have generally done okay with these things, but never had this before. I had at least one family member say she was wiped out for a couple of days. In any event, good excuse to lay around and watch football - not that you need an excuse.

No i never had chicken pox
What was the result of your Varicella Zoster IgG Antibody Test? It's not routinely tested, so how would you know? As I said, it's entirely possible for a person to have had chicken pox and have a subclinical or mild presentation, meaning little no noticeable symptoms of contracting the virus. Lastly, saying because you never had chicken pox means you are probably immune to the virus is based on what? You can still get it and/or shingles if you were exposed to the virus at any time of your life.
