I have two names in mind. I'm going to say one now and another later if it's wrong....

What about Carl Everett? I think he filled in for Thomas most of that season.

Jermaine Dye

After him, I don't I can think of any more legitimate guesses :)

Damn you! That was going to be my other guess. Hopefully Everett is the answer. The only other guy from that team who would hit in that part of the order is maybe Joe Crede.

The Braves were my #2 team growing up (Orioles #1, sadly). I was certain Jermaine Dye would be one of my new favorite players. Think back to the 96 season. The Braves had Chipper Jones, Dave Justice, Fred McGriff, Marquis Grissom, Javy Lopez, Ryan Klesko... and then a couple young pups in Jermaine Dye and Andruw Jones. That's some serious firepower, not to mention the three HOF pitchers. Management really squandered what could have been an all-time great team.

Then, for whatever reason, the Braves traded away Justice and Grissom to the Indians. They got Lofton on a one-year rental. Yay. Two days later the Braves traded away Jermaine Dye. I'm not sure which trade hurt worse, emotionally. Huge, huge losses. At any rate, can you name one of the two players the Braves received in the Jermaine Dye trade?

Vic Bubas played for Everett Case at N.C. State. He almost chose to coach at another school instead of Duke.
Name the school and the man who interviewed Bubas.

I believe this is mentioned in a book I'm reading right now, but can't think of it.

I did not know about this until today. Was researching N.C. State Student newspaper from the 50’s and happened on the story.

At the very least, the person conducting the interview would have to be a memorable person. Not sure there are too many memorable ADs from 60 years ago. So I'm thinking it's a legendary coach - and probably a high-profile program... how about Phog Allen and Kansas?

No. Remember Bubas was only an assistant coach at the time.

Way before my time lol. But wasn't NC State consistently in the top 10-20 in the 1950's? I suppose going from an assistant to the HC at Kansas is a pretty big leap. I think that's what you were trying to say.

My next guess is probably a leap, too. But seriously don't know that many head coaches from that time period. So let's say Oklahoma State and Henry Iba.

No.
Another hint. Interviewer played for Wallace Wade.
Another hint. He had football field named for him.

Howard was defensive line coach when Head coach retired. Read that in the meeting to find another coach someone stood up and said “I
nominate Frank Howard.” In the back of the room he hollered”I second that motion”.
He got the job and never left. Glad Bubas did not take that job.
You are up.

So this was around the time Press Maravich was hired?

You are right. I forgot he was the coach hired there in 1956. I read Pete’s biography
“Pistol” by Mark Kreigal which was a fabulous book. He also wrote “Namath”

I had a brother that was briefly recruited by Clemson to play football. At the 95 spring game, Frank Howard approached this one recruit and had a short, but interesting conversation.

Howard: What position do you play, son? kicker?
Recruit: No, sir. I'm a running back
Howard: It's about time we recruited your type. (the recruit is white).

I don't remember the exact words, but Howard seemed genuinely surprised that Clemson was recruiting a white tailback.

Howard may or not been a racist but one story makes me think the answer is more complex than a yes or no.
Greatest football player ever at Michigan State was George Webster who was a high school star in SC. After a serious injury ended his high school career Frank Howard made sure Webster had his operation at Clemson Hospital on campus. If it weren’t for Howard he may have not received the Medical care that enabled him to play football again.
Knowing Webster could not play at Clemson Howard got in touch w his friend Duffy Daugherty who was Spartan Coachand told him to sign Webster. Webster led them to 2 national championships and then was a star in NFL. At 6ft 4 and 224 pounds he was the Zion Williamson of another era. Died young at age 60 .

Eh. I'm not trying to cast stones at him. He grew up in Alabama in the 1920's. He never had a black player during his tenure, but of course that was in a different era. I would think he evolved somewhat over time. He probably approached the skinny white kid cuz he thought, "Gee, what position could he possibly play?" His first instinct was a kicker.

Two part question involving Nolan Ryan....

A) How many Cy Young Awards did Ryan win?
B) How many MVP Awards did Ryan win?

ZERO TO BOTH
Despite winning 324 games, throwing seven no hitters and striking out 5,714 hitters it is hard to believe that Nolan Ryan didn't win a Cy Young or an MVP. Ryan's highest finish in the Cy Young Award was 2nd in 1973 and his highest MVP finish was 14th in 1974.

I think this could be a trick question but if I am wrong then I am wrong but I am going to say that Jack Nicklaus, the Golden Bear himself, has 19 second place finishes in major tournaments.
