As a kid turning twelve in VA in 1994, it seemed like everyone was a UNC - Cowboys - Braves fan, which seemed completely ridiculous to me. I adopted a "one-state removed" policy for my fandom. Virginia doesn't have any professional teams (they are all technically in D.C.), so I decided I would only root for teams in Virginia or in a state/district connected to Virginia. I was fortunate enough to have familial connections that made me a lifelong Duke fan, and unfortunate enough to have connections that made me a lifelong Redskins fan. You can't win them all I guess.

We probably overestimate the # of bandwagon fans b/c each fan -- long-time or bandwagon -- gets three times louder when their team gets hot.

I'd distinguish between the "bandwagon" fan who pulls for some random, cross-country, out-of-region team and the local bandwagon fan. I mean, someone w/ no connection to the Yankees or NYC or any family history of fandom who becomes a Yankees fan is suspect until they've paid their dues. If you move to NY, or you live in Kansas City and the Royals create all kinds of excitement in the community, you get a little bit of a pass for getting on the bandwagon that way. I'm a Lions and Red Wings fan, but if they're not playing and the Panthers or Hurricanes are, I pull for them. I don't go out and buy all their gear, but I get invested in pulling for them.

I think you hit the nail on the head

Well I guess I've been a bandwagon Yankees fan since 1960 when I was 8 years old then. OFC

We have a lot in common. I was born in NC and Redskins was my dads team, so I became a fan. I'll never waiver from that. Here's to fighting for Old DC and the Devils too. May they win again real soon!

Yea I jumped on the Cowboys bandwagon in 1969 when I was 7.

OFC
Ha! No, no, I did say "until they've paid their dues," which 40+ years would certainly qualify as, and I'd add a waiver for kids, too. Kids should be able to choose whomever they want.

Right on! I was happy to at least have a playoff game to watch with a rooting interest this year. Time will tell if Cousins is the real deal, but there are reasons for optimism.

I know what you meant dat. I should have put up a winky face I guess. I'm the type of fan that just doesn't waiver no matter what. I'm a Colt fan also going back to the days of Unitas, Berry, Bubba Smith , John Mackey, Tom Matte and I could go on and on. I didn't care for the move to Indy. I didn't care for Irsay and wish he had sold the Colts but just because they moved wasn't a good enough reason to change. They were still the Colts. I really don't have a favorite NBA team so I tend to follow our Duke guys although it is really spread out. Not even a Hornets fan. I do pull for the Hurricanes although I don't follow hockey . I did a few years ago went to a Hurricane game and was right on the glass. I have to say it was awesome. Having players flying into that glass within 6' of me was surreal. I've saw the Yankees, Duke and the Colts through great times and very low times and was just as strong of a fan as when all were winning. To me a band wagon fan follows and is a fan of the team as long as they are winning. I know a guy that has been at one time or another an UNC fan, NCSU fan and right now or at least the last time I spoke with him was actually a Duke fan. To me he is a band wagon fan. OFC

I was also born and raised in NC and grew up as a Redskins fan then I also became a Panthers fan when they became a team. I pull for both teams to win when they play and in cases when they play each other then I pull for whichever one of them is having the best season overall.

Agreed! Cutting RG3 was a bad move in my book considering you have no other replacement named. Anyway, Bball is here so I'm happy. Duke not playing well will change. Hopefully in two months we can talk about the roll Duke is on.

No doubt. Ideally 2016 will go down as another year where we marvel at the job that K did and the tweaks he made after a rough patch.
