I am just going to watch to hear the silly political statements.

Last night the wife and I rented Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight. If they represent two of Hollywood's best movies, then they have to do a lot better.

I was going to add an over/under joke about how many minutes into the broadcast the first one shows up.

My pick....in the opening credits.

Yay! Ignorant actors preach to folks about things they don't understand. I'll skip.

BTW did I hear Bill Paxton died? Terrible news. Loved him since Chet in Weird Science.

Agree with you 100% about the political statements - really rubs me the wrong way that since they have this platform they are going to push their political agenda and beliefs down our throats. I'm not watching to hear your political views - in fact quite the opposite I am watching as an escape from things such as politics so PLEASE STAY IN YOUR LANE!

Yeah, saw Moonlight - I liked the subject but felt it would have been better by really focusing on one age. I wanted to see a lot of the other characters more flushed out.

I never watch these award shows. The only thing of interest for me is that my cousin (who is a NJ native)'s film, Jim: The James Foley Story is getting some deserved publicity due to the Sting song getting nominated.

I thought that Manchester By The Sea was very well acted, but the storyline was sad and left me down after seeing it.

I believe that the only nominated film I have seen is "Hidden Figures" which was very good. Not sure if its best picture worthy but I can see it getting best actress/supporting actress wins.
Last night we were deciding what to watch on Demand and it came down to "Manchester" or "Nocturnal Animals" which I do not believe is nominated. We went with the latter and found it to be a very interesting movie but if you watch I, skip the first 3 minutes or so. And I mean skip, do not watch the screen as you fast forward. Some things can't be unseen.

I haven't watched any of the award shows in years. Mostly because of all the self-congratulatory drivel. But I have a question for the folks who are complaining about the liberal political statements of some of the participants. Do you object to the political statements or do you object because they are liberal?

I consider the Oscars to be the most publicized circle jerk in the world.
It's always fun to see which movies nobody ever saw were the "best".
I know. How the hell can a movie be nominated if it hasn't been released yet? And how can you even consider a movie that absolutely flamed out at the box office?

I object because it's a political statement, whether it's an awards show, a concert, a seminar, whatever. I'm there for a reason, or I'm watching for a reason: don't pollute the water with you political views, even if I agree with them.

non movie fans, skip over all this.... I don't like the academies, but do like the movies

I have seen all the best picture nominees this year....... to me there were no really great
pictures in the group....Manchester by the sea was pretty good, a bit too long, not enough
action.... Arrival was interesting, I liked the time element, but probably cannot win..
the highly acclaimed "Moonlight" was just ok also.... the others movies fair, Hidden figures being one of the best, many thought it very good.

they probably give it to LaLa Land because it was different, much in the way that
"the artist" was honored, the hook there being a silent movie, here a dancing musical.

Denzel did the best acting job, a bit bogged down by some dialogue that was meant for
the stage, he still probably wins.... Affleck did not have to show much emotion throughout
his picture, still has a shot

Viola Davis should have been put up for best actress and win it for Fences, I hope she gets the supporting nod..... usually it takes just a few minutes of solid emotion to win supporting, which she gives you....Davis should win here, I hope. ...

Portman gives a solid performance but probably will not win best actress
the best actress award thus goes to Stone....

Playing make believe does not deserve an award. Even if it's a made up one. To spend $43 million on an awards show and then tell everyone they should give money to whatever cause they deem worthy is absurd. Hell I thought 3/4 of them were supposed to move to Canada by now. Whatever happened to that.

The Oscars are fun. So is the Daytona 500.

Interesting to see how many folks are not only not going to watch the Oscars, they're going to not watch them hard! I'm sure there'll be a safe space on Fox.

The only one of these movies I've seen so far was La La Land, which is incredibly self-indulgent, but I thought Emma Stone was pretty good. The first half hour looked like it was filmed by a high school video club.

Libs in Hollywood love movies about libs in Hollywood. I'm sure that movie will be recognized by the liberal Academy.

My wife and I rented Manchester, so disappointing.

I thought Chris Affleck and Michelle Williams were very good. But a movie story this sad.... not what I want to spend 10 bucks on. For now on, only comedies, War movies, thrillers, action movies, and Porn for me ! :grimace:

These Hollywooders should scrap celebrating each other and instead use the time to visit children's hospitals or volunteer at soup kitchens like RU FB players do.

Rutgers Football has award dinners every single year. Most of the actors/actresses volunteer or have created and now run their own charities/foundations. Having an awards dinner does not have an impact on ones ability to give back. How silly...
