A couple months ago, a filling fell out of my wisdom tooth. I kind of just forgot about it, but then tonight out of nowhere, my whole jaw started hurting like crazy. It’s been so bad that it feels like a migraine also, even making my tongue feel kind of numb.

Is that a normal toothache, or more like an infection? Thanks, as I’ve never really had any toothache other than sensitive issues in my life. Kind of hard to see a dentist at 11pm.

Absolutely an infection and should be taken care of immediately. Close to brain isn't anything to delay taking action on.

There are two likely procedures, 1 - tooth extraction, 2 - gum surgery above the tooth to remove the infectiin and preserving the tooth, fairly simple and my recommendation

Yeah, don't mess around with that. Get in ASAP.

Could be an abscess in the root. The more it swells the more it will hurt. Call your dentist first thing in the morning and get in. In the mean time, take Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Orajel might help too.

I will say from personal experience that you need to get your @$$ in to the dentist ASAP. I procrastinated on a tooth for too long and it went abscess on me. Was quite literally the most painful experience of my life. Was an absolutely miserable few days until the antibiotics kicked in. they had to take care of the infection before working on the tooth. LESSON LEARNED

Ha...yeah I had that too. Man does it hurt! The second the anti-inflammatories and antibiotics kicked in I felt like a new man.

I have never had a migraine but if that is what those feel like I really feel bad for people that get migraines.

Finally found a dentist with an opening. Hope they can work on it today and not wait like that.

My brother almost died from an infected wisdom tooth two years ago. It spread to his jaw then his brain. He had emergency surgery at Bryan to remove the tooth and clean infection out of his jaw. He was in a coma and on a respirator for a week. We thought he was going to die.

God bless the doctors though at Bryan. They saved his life and he pulled through.

Moral of this story? DON'T EVER ignore a huge toothache

Yes, before antibiotics were invented, deaths from dental abscesses were much, much more common. In the upper jaw, a brain abscess called cavernous sinus thrombosis would kill, and in the lower jaw, the infection can spread to the side and back of the mouth and into the throat or under the tongue in the floor of the mouth, either one closing the airway to kill.

These have become more common, recently with the development of antibiotic resistant organisms.

If you have a fever and/or swelling, you can't wait long. The oral surgeons at Bryan did well on that case of the poster's brother discussed above.

Could be an abscess. I had one of those and it was no fun. Not the worst pain in my life but pretty darn close. 3rd worst. Definitely something you don't want to wait on. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Enjoy that root canal procedure! :(

Hopefully your surgeon doesn’t temporarily paralyze your face and not tell you it’s normal.

I lucked out, on some meds for now, so it feels better, but my wisdom tooth will be removed in a couple weeks.
Don't want to be a scare monger, and I am glad the meds have you feeling better, but keep a close, close eye on this. My brother who almost died from an infected tooth was also initially sent home with meds to clear up the infection so they could safely remove the tooth "in two weeks". He felt better for a few days but then, within 24 hours, the right side of his face and neck ballooned up and turned hot and red. Within 12 more hours he was in an operating room at Bryan, intubated and on a respirator.

Just be proactive buddy and don't wait if it starts swelling again

What kept you from calling your dentist when filling fell out or tooth broke?
