Hard mode is harder (but still not hard.. yet).. especially starting with a random-ish word (though I'll never choose one that repeats a letter as the first word, I have used words with less frequently used letters like W, Q, K). Hard mode means once you uncover a letter you have to reuse it in next word.

I do that probably 95% of the time and would do it 100% of the time if I could come up with a word that takes all the found letters. Sometimes a word that uses all of them especially in diff positions doesn’t come to me.

It seems like a logical method of going about solving it.

It just occurred to me how odd it was that I had no yellow squares.. no found letters out of position. If you turn on hard mode (in a browser) you have no choice but to reuse the letters.

oh my.. my third word choice took FOREVER to come up with (you see, my first two words got me the first 2 letters in order.. but eliminated so many words that started with those two letters... taxing my imagination.. then the 4th was a series of failed random filling in of the missing letter... then, after finding a real word it would accept.. but not match.. then I had to once again think of what the word could possibly be and, yes, was a word I was aware of.. when I thought it might be something I had never heard of. Strange game.

the first word was something you might wear on a foot playing baseball or football.. second word was a plural name for the common riff-raff

It was easy for me, got it in three, but I'm almost always thinking about breasts.
Got today’s on the website but funny enough one of the two I’ve missed in the app was BOOBY. I had the two Os and the Y and went through about 4 combos of letters that would fit but none of them were right.

I did the same for my first week 5 -3's & 2 -4's
Today, it took me to the brink and I squeaked it out. Some days I guess the word just seems to elude you, while most days it jumps off the screen at you

which is why I switched to "hard mode" and do not use the same first words to handle all the common letters (though most of these random worlds seem to use 2-3 of the common letters.. I suppose that is to be expected). It is way too easy if you just use the ten most common letters in the first 2 guesses.

Hit from the Pro tees. Take the double-diamonds (its an easy mountain anyway).

Try reverse wordle and guess other peoples guesses from their posts.

I prefer to start with a different word every time and use hard mode style of play but never turned it on. It’s annoying when there are multiple options with the same 2 open spots.

yes.. used your preference... same as mine..
BRINK (also used double letters in next two guesses.. second yellow and white block next to it showed only one of that dbl letter was found.. good to know it does that)

I had 4/5 on try 3, but there were 7 reasonable possibilities at that point. Thankfully I got it within 6 lol. This would have been a good day to break with tradition and throw in a strategic word.

My friend got me started on Spelling Bee on the NYT games app. Yikes. By comparison, Wordle is like doing the word search in Highlighter Magazine.

So, I do Wordle and feel clever. Then I get to struggle all day and wait for β€œalleviate” to pop into my brain.

i think thats the appeal of wordle. the solution is "accessible".

I get most of them. usually in the 3rd or 4th attempt. but I do need to use my brain .

if it was easier (and not a challenge at all) it would be boring.

if it was too hard for most people (like the NYT crossword) then the frustration would put people off.

so I think the secret to Wordle is that its in a "goldilocks zone" of being a puzzle that regular (but not genius) reasonably educated people can find challenging enough without being frustratingly hard

When I first started playing I thought it would be harder and take too much time for 1 puzzle. As I played it more, I realized it's not so bad. If you play the wordus app, which I do sometimes, you'll run into words at times that may stump you for a bit. I've missed like 4 in that game out of maybe 150 games. Ironically, not because of word difficulty. More that you have almost all the letters with many options of remaining letters which fit and you run through them but don't land on the right one even with 4 or 5 guesses to get it.

Thanks for referring the Spelling Bee game. Haven't heard of that one but found an app that is similar.

yes.. "winning" is not the issue.. "thinking" is the "win".. it is easy to "win".. but you must "think".. and it is up to you to decide if you want to do it the easiest possible way.. or force yourself to think about it a bit more. And, for me, starting with a randomly chosen word rather than the first two picks being strategically chosen to eliminate/reveal letters... that forces more and more different thoughts.

I agree thinking is a win and actually that's why I like games like these. I've had dementia in my family history unfortunately so I like to do things like this that make my brain work a little.

But I don't think making it easy means you're not thinking. Coming up with strategies that make things easier is thinking. I read about good first words to use and have tried a few but then settled on one and after I've come up with good 2nd words to use in some instances depending on what's revealed in the first. To me that's thinking....strategy, problem solving etc...and that imo is important for sharpening the brain. Winning makes it fun though lol.

re-using the same first words over and over denies you the need to THINK about that...but to each, his own.

It’s strategy and figuring out which one works best and now I’ve done the same for second ones on my own after seeing what is revealed from the first. Developing strategy is thinking.

Awww.. you didn't even THINK about my response. So I'll expand on it. You THOUGHT about the first word strategy once.. and so on for the second word. And from now on you will use your strategy.. without further thought.. for subsequent games. And thus, will quit, because it is just repeating the same thing over and over.

You do you. Just suggesting that you may enjoy the game more if you deny yourself resorting to that strategy.. and think about using odd words as the first word and so on.

Then again, I have played a lot of "sandbox" style games where you basically create your own goals or have none at all... so I have found that the need to "win", in many such games, results in less thought, less fun. It is also called "min-max" playing.. doing only things that result in minimum loss or maximum gain. I have found it, ultimately, disappointing and that is what using the "best words" in "wordle" is to me. So, it is not a criticism, it is a suggestion.. an option. Try it.. you may like it.. or not.

Low 7 figures…not bad.

I don’t think that was the payment. There were numbers in the article but no $$$ that I saw.

I would bet they showed him how hard it will be to prove he owns the IP (obviously) and offered him $15 million.

Not saying I know what happened. But I’d be willing to bet it’s $12mm to $18mm.

EDIT: I re-read the article (with encouragement from a friend) and realized I missed the reference to the amount. My error.

That’s low.

Very cool information theory analysis of guessing various 5-letter words for Wordle, although I do have trouble buying that "crane" is the best opener, as "c" seems like it's simply too infrequent (10th most frequently used letter in common words) to be part of the best guess vs. other best words like tares or raise, which use more frequently used letters and are two of my go-to opening words.

Although his analysis does take into account the top 2300 or so of the most common ~12K 5-letter words allowed, which is more specific than just looking at most common letters in general. I tried crane tonight and it didn't help as I would've had the same letters known by my regular first guess words - only reason I got it in 3 guesses was the final word just kind of popped into my head, luckily, as I was stumped for a couple of minutes.

Geeze.. someone thought sharing the "best opener" was smart (not you, #s.. the youtuber channel).. might as well tell kids the "solved" nature of tic-tac-toe and checkers. Have everyone use "crane" as the start word because that is "smart".

Sad.

I stopped playing.. as others have noted it is essentially too easy even if you handcuff yourself with what seems to be strange starters.. because so many 5-letter words use the most used letters.. you naturally think of them. Then eliminating them and less common letters in your "random" starter eliminates so many possibilities. You end up just taking a bit longer to solve the same thing, the same way.

Yesterday’s wordle was a tricky one for me. I got like 3-4 letters on the initial guesses but they were all in the wrong positions. I had thought of words that moved those letters into different positions and they all were still turning up yellow. I was thinking the migration to the NY Times sight might have messed something up lol. Finally came to me in the fifth guess.

I like that Quordle game. Got them with 1 guess left. Doing 4 simultaneously looks like it could be tricky.

I think good start words and second words are more important for that one so you can hopefully solve a couple as quick as possible. I got the first two words on guesses 3 and 4 and the second two on guesses 7 and 8.

edit: There’s a β€œpractice” mode in quordle so you can play more than once if you like. Played a few more times this morn. It is trickier for me. 2-2 overall..get 3 words but not the 4th.

Thanks for sharing quordle Mrs Screw. As with the other games shared, I've gotten a little addicted...for now at least lol. Good to pass the time while waiting for the game and probably off and on during the game too.

Tried the solve one quickly strategy and it worked for the first puzzle I finished but found it's not the best for me as I kept playing. I use a different approach to solving each now and think I got a better handle on it. Was 2-2 and now 11-1 since change of approach with more finishes on the 7th guess as well. One on the 6th too but that's just because two words were quite similar.
