We've now had five in the modern rankings era, according to the 247 composite, which takes the average ranking of all the major ratings services. They are, as follows, in rank order:

1) Nance
2) Law
3) Bam
4) Beran
5) Kopp

That's it.

CC recruited them all, and CC recruited 4 of them in the last 2 years. Hence, my optimism for 2020-21 and beyond....

If they all end up as good as Law, we’ll be on to something. Good post.

If you aren’t optimistic for 2019-2020, I fear it might be worse than I anticipate.

Feel like it’s slightly cherry-picking to not include Falzon. Was a 4-star, 75th in the country, by ESPN, a 4-star, #92, by Rivals, and a 4-star, #129, on 247. How is that not consensus? Obviously injuries played a huge role and that’s unfortunate, but it needs to be mentioned when the insinuation is that the four youngsters are likely to follow Law’s trajectory.

And that’s of course to say nothing of Rap and Benson, both of which were in the 4-star ballpark. Rap was #97 nationally and a firm 4-star from Rivals, for instance. Benson was #118 and a 4-star as well.

Or you could be like Duke, Kansas and Kentucky who have 10 or more 4 star players on their roster and guess what, not all of them play up to their ranking.

From your fingers to the basketbal gods, Mikewebb.

Like you, I'll take this trajectory for NU. But in the end, NU needs:

1) A couple of players (regardless of ranking) to give - shall we say AT LEAST - 3rd team/honorable mention all-B10 performances.
2) Besides that, you probably need another strong contributor like Law. I could see Gaines at that level.
3) AND THEN, you STILL need that steady, supporting cast - another two guys who play at the level of Gaines last year. I'd prefer one to be some Indiana-ish kid who may have no clue on defense, but has a rock solid outside shot.

I almost want to say that's the minimum of what NU needs.

I'd argue Pardon played consistently a 3rd team/honorable mention level. After that, each game was a mystery. Law and Gaines fit into the second and third groups most of the time.

And the single time there was a rock solid shooter, the Cats probably played their best game of the year.

If CC can keep recruiting the program should be in good shape moving forward. Expectations got out of alignment when we made the tourney- a lot of things aligned perfectly that year, and suddenly it was expected to be the new norm by many. The 2020 recruiting class is huge- we will have nice foundation from the last two classes, but it needs more support.

What about Rap? He was a 4 star on all boards, right? And didn't Benson make Rivals 4 star at one point? I do think that Rap was consensus though.
I think Glades may be on to something. I'm not as impressed with 4 stars in Basketball. Rap, Falzon, and even Nance seem to be marginal at best in this league.

Yes, as I said, both Rap and Benson were 4-stars on Rivals.

Falzon was a 4-star in the 247 Composite, on Rivals, on ESPN and from 247 itself. Excluded from OP’s list, why?

It just goes to show that you can’t just get one 4-star guy per class and expect to be a force in the Big Ten. Kopp and Nance were the rare twofer, but it very much remains to be seen how Nance develops.

CCC got a great one in Bam. But we need 2 more guys like him in the 2020 class for me to say that recruiting is on an upward swing.

Was Bam great when he was a 3 star?

Falzkn was a .9303 composite in the 247 composite, which made him a 3 star. That is why he is not on my consensus 4-star list.

That's strange- when you look at the all-time rankings, his composite is clearly 3 stars...
Yeah, there is a glitch in their system.

But I think we all would have been thrilled with Aaron's career had he not been injured. His First Year season was solid, better than a couple of other 4*s on the list. The talent was there. Sorry for Aaron that he couldn't contribute more.

Ya my guess is most big ten teams have a bunch of 4 stars and several will have 1-2

As a fanbase we tend to anchor to the highest rating we can find. So if someone is a 4 star on one service, they become a 4 star in our minds. But the composite rankings are likely a better way to go--though glitches do seem to occur. It seems safe to say that we've had higher rated recruits under CC, on average, than any prior NU coach.

Yes, it was evident to anyone who took the time to watch his tape that he is as good of a guard as Collins has recruited at NU. Far more polished than Lindsey or Gaines.

Far more polished? Hardly. Polish is exactly what Bam needs. It's the physical tools and ability to score in a variety of ways against high level competition that has everybody rightfully excited. Lindsey always had it all. For some reason he had trouble sustaining any sort of fire in his belly. And Gaines is Gaines. He'll never be a polished player in the traditional sense. Just a great junk yard dog to have on your team. So you have Gaines whose role is to wipe polish off the opposition. Lindsey who had boatloads of polish left in the can and Bam who needs a couple years of spit shining to fully realize his enormous potential.

You need to bone up on your basketball before you continue this condescending trend of yours.

He doesn't want to get Polish from the second level of new Welsh Ryan....they taste like they were cooked last month.

Ok, I concede polished might not have been the right word. Was trying to say “better player” in a nicer way.
