I agree 40-10 that people here 408 have a really pessimistic outlook. Hard to understand. This is answering(or trying to answer with an analogy) a specific situation. It doesn't answer the general question. Ever since I've been on here, almost every commit of ours that visits another school-any player visiting any other school regardless of what school or where they are from is assumed to be gone. Yet almost every time somebody that is committed to another school-regardless of where they are committed or where they are from is perceived as a longshot to come here. That outlook to me just comes from the general negativity that most people who post on here have.
There are several folks, maybe even the majority of folks on this board that believe that Herman will have Texas rolling faster than NU gets rolling. (Yes, even Pro-Riley folks)
Herman is the type of guy a bunch of folks wanted when Riley's name was pulled out of thin air.
Will Herman have a better roster to work with? Seems like Charlie Strong had to clean house when he got Texas and re-build, which takes a while. Looks to me that Strong did a lot of the hard leg work (cutting players loose) that Herman won't have to deal with.Well, don't count me among them. I've thought since the beginning of this year that he was overhyped and he isn't the can't miss coach people think he is. I'm not saying he isn't a good hire for them, but just that he might not be as good as people think he is.
Herman's resume was not any better than Strongs....
I don't know, did Strong turn a 3rd String QB into a NC caliber QB in a handful of weeks?
Herman comes with a lot of hype, some of it "cool by association" because he was part of the Urban Meyer machine.
Strong is a good coach, but he never had the advantage of seeing the inner workings of Meyer's program. Which is half of what UT is paying for. OSU South.
I agree there are some outstanding questions on Herman (I frequently use the fact that Herman lost some headscratchers against like competition down in Houston when we start talking about Husker losses and what good coaches do and do not achieve), but overall I think he retains a higher level of expectation than Strong does.

You do realize Strong coached under Meyer? So he was full aware of his system. He also kicked an Urban Meyer led Florida's squad's *** in the Sugar Bowl with an unknown qb at the time. Again his resume is nothing special, just a load of hype. He wasn't even the top non power 5 coach available, that would be Fleck.
And then there's this factor:Well let's talk this factor: Nebraska is on the upswing in an iconic conference, while Texas is dumpster fire in a joke of a conference. Advantage Nebraska....
A new QB may end up being the biggest factor in improved TE production. Additionally Carter being injured most of the year hurt our TE production dramatically. Engelhaupt is going to be a good one and we still have a 4 star on the roster that I think if completely healthy could make an impact as well. Why is it, if a NU commit goes and makes a late visit to another school, he's assumed "gone"?
Yet, if the huskers host a player late whose already committed to another school, it's perceived as a "long shot, nice try, but he's not coming here... at least we got him to visit"?
Also, why is it perceived that our TE production will be taking a big hit next year? Look @ the 2016 stats. Not that impressive.
Between Carter, Cotton, & Foster... Passing game: 26 receptions for 249 yds. & 2 TDs. Also, 2 rushes for 25 yards. These are not world beater type of numbers. Maybe people's concern revolves more around missing the blocking from TE. Because I just don't understand why everyone thinks the drop off @ TE is going to be terrible. If I didn't know any better, I'd think we were losing Jordan Reed or something.
All, I am saying is don't sleep on Engelhaupt & Stoll. Mark my words and come back in a year, 2017 TE wont match 2016 offensive production, they will exceed it. The scheme change next year alone will boast production. And what exactly are we losing? A walk-on, a glorified walk-on, and an injury prone good player with the potential to be a great player? And that's no knock on Foster, Cotton, and definitely not on Carter. I am just trying to state that the days a head for TE @ NU are likely much better. And IMO it's not something that will eventually be, it will be better next year.
He also kicked an Urban Meyer led Florida's squad's *** in the Sugar Bowl with an unknown qb at the time..
and teddy Bridgewater was as unknown as tom osborne is on this boardWill Muschamp was Florida's coach at that time.
They are scrambling to come up with a recruiting class this year...hopefully Texas only poaches one of our recruits.
If we can't keep Baylor from poaching commits from us, we are in trouble. And Baylor only has one commitment at this time. I could see the Bears doing some poaching with somebody's commits as well.
