PK has overestimated the following:
- His coaching pedigree and coaching accomplishments. Being a scrappy underdog, I know that he has to be super confident to avoid taking a back seat. His success at the mid majors was very good. But it’s not “elite”
- How hard and intense his conditioning and practices are. Yes, the team sweats and grunts while working out. But his practices seem more fun (offensive minded) and more about the guys feeling “good about themselves”. Most top 20 programs still have remnants of the semi -old school.
- which leads to an over estimation of how tough his guys are.
- overestimation of how athletic and one on one gifted they are. Outside of 2 guys, the rest need offensive sets that help them get open and help create driving lanes.
- Because they developed a false sense of confidence after making it thru pre season that was not as rigorous, they get smacked in the mouth by teams (like Kansas and Arkansas) who got cussed out, punched on each other and berated by the staff and former players when they were looking soft. PK’s preseason appeared to be mostly feel good.
Moral of the story is, you don’t know what you don’t know. You train your troops on what you THINK is the best strategy only to find out your strategy is vanilla.
I can imagine PK saying “this worked at Winthrop and the College of Charleston. These guys just need to do it better”. Which is the crux of the problem we are seeing.
