Basketball...Dave Lebo won 350+ games. Most of them at Carlisle where his team won 4 straight state championship. Jeff Lebo was on the 1st state championship team. Billy Owens was on all 4.

Speedy Morris was a great Philly legend. Won 700+ games coaching at Roman Catholic, Penn Charter and St. Joe's Prep.

Don't forget about Butch Evans on some of those Carlisle teams. He was a man against boys.

Butch was not on any of the state championships teams, but they were very good during his time. If I remember he was a smooth lefty. Believe he graduated in the early 80's then had a short career at VCU. Their 1st state championship was '85.

You are right..he was a man among boys.

Don't remember for sure but I think Butch was a senior when Jeff was a freshman.

Young Jack Henzes of Dunmore. 52 seasons - 435 wins - 2nd behind Berwick's Curry - 1 state championship. Gets overlooked
One of the winningest coaches in America — Jack Henzes of Dunmore High School in northeast Pennsylvania is stepping-down after an illustrious career that ends with 444 victories and a state championship in 1989. He retires with the second most football coaching victories in the state behind the late George Curry, who won 455 games.

I think you are correct. Jeff Lebo was senior when they won their 1st state championship. Think he had a broken hand for the state championship game and freshman Billy Owens carried them. Michael Owens was also on that team.

Billy Owens was the best player I've ever seen in high school...any sport, anywhere.

Billy's brother, Michael, was a terrific RB. I believe he went to Syracuse. In high school when Carlisle played McDevitt, Owens and Ricky Watters had some memorable games.

BOB CRAIG
Head coach at:
Newport (1956-1958), Cedar Cliff (1963-2000)
Football Record: 282-144-11 (41 years)
Championships: One Central Penn League, four South Central League (two outright), three Mid-Penn Conference Division I (two outright), three District 3-AAAA, PIAA Class AAAA runner-up in 1988
Wrestling Record: 513/131/9

Given a choice to join the Cleveland Browns for a tryout or accept a teaching and coaching job at Newport High School for the same salary, Craig, who grew up in an orphange, opted for the latter. Craig is the midstate's all-time leader in football victories and 13th all-time in Pennsylvania. Craig never played scholastic football or wrestled, but took up both sports with a passion in college. In fact, he barely missed qualifying for the 1956 U.S. Olympic wrestling team.

Dave Bailey- Tussey Mountain Boys Basketball. In game antics are legendary.
Agree. See the article I posted above. His teams dominated District 5. Someone back in the 90’s wrote an article that some college and NBA teams would struggle with the environment at a home game at Tussey Mountain.

An obvious central PA name, the great George Chaump. Coached John Harris in 60's and 70's, and late in his career returned to coach Central Dauphin and Harrisburg High. One of the greats.

Going off the reservation of coaches to mention 93 year old legend George Toma of Edwardsville who will oversee his 57th consecutive Super Bowl grounds crew.

900? How many years has he coached and how many games a year are they allowed to play in Pennsylvania?
Field hockey is pretty big in certain parts of Maryland and there’s a couple Hall of Fame women who have 10+ state championships in 30 years and are nowhere close to that amount of wins.
I can’t answer your question, but there is

I was in attendance for Billy's 53-point effort to cap off the 4 straight state titles in 1988. That was a true man amongst boys effort.

Love seeing all the familiar mentions in here. My uncle coached with Pete White and my cousin played for Insinger. Chaump made my alma mater a Mid-Penn power after years and years of mediocrity or less. Bob Craig was a freakin legend at Cedar Cliff in football and wrestling. Linda Kreiser continues to roll out powerhouses year after year.

One name not mentioned so far is John Miller, father of college coaches Sean and Archie. He won 583 games and 4 state titles at Blackhawk.

My bad. checking on it with my brother. Okay, Coach had a Italian restaurant in Ashland. And his brother was over at Knoebels.
Just curious, anyone know who is running the show at Knoebels? Buddy's got to be 77 and Dick is in his 80's. Those of us who grew up in the area lived at that place.....LOL.....haven't been there in years.

McDevitts backfield in Waters junior year was…Sean Barowski (PSU/Syracuse), James Bryant (Ohio State) and Ricky Waters (Notre Dame).

I was at the state championship game his sophomore year. He definitely could play. The only high school player I’ve seen who was better was Chris Webber.

SIAP (there is blocked content in my feed):

John Miller, basketball, Blackhawk High School, Beaver Falls, Pa. My alma mater. Father to Archie and Sean Miller. Averaged more than 20 wins a season for over 20 years. Coached UNC’s Dante Calabria. His daughter was also a D1 bball talent.

Today, the park, which is co-owned by Dick Knoebel with his brothers Richard (Dick), Ronald (Buddy) and their sister Leanna Muscato, is operated by the next generation, Dick’s sons Brian and Rick, Buddy’s son Trevor, and Leanna’s daughter Lauren.

Thanks. Buddy for a time was my wrestling coach and science teacher. At that time Dick was in the marines...although he was out of the service before I graduated. Leanne was a year or so behind me at Southern. Diane was in my class and there was a boy Dave a year older I believe.

Wow, never saw Billy Owen's in person. He was special. I saw Jason Kidd's HS team (from Califonia) play Rasheed Wallace's team from Simon Gratz (Philly) @ the Beach Ball Clasic in Myrtle Beach. Jason Kidd made a behind the back pinpoint half court pass to a guy breaking under the basket. He had phenomenal dribbling and passing skills. Rasheed simply dominated on the glass, rebounding and shot blocking. I told my son, you're watching two future pro bball players.

I knew and worked with Coach Craig for a time while he was still at Cedar Cliff. This was a truly fine man. He had 'voluntary' weight room nights at CCHS for the football players. The moment each player walked in they had to report to Coach Craig, he had a big binder with their weight room routines and goals. But the first thing he spoke to them about was their grades. He had each player's report card printed out every week and had them in his binder.

I played for another very good PA HS football coach, Harry Clarke, at Martinsburg Central. I was a junior when we beat Bellfonte for Harry's 200th win.

When State High Was King of the Mat: The Homer Barr Era

The State College High School wrestling team of the late 1950s and early 1960s set a Pennsylvania high school record for consecutive dual meet victories. While winning 64 straight meets, the Little Lion wrestling program became one of the most remarkable sports dynasties ever forged in this area

I’ll add Len rockey to the list since he was a wrestler on that 60’s team and became head coach of state high wrestling .
Coaching for years and having several state champions as well as his own undefeated streak from 1982-1984.

Center County’s own Jim Gonder of Philipsburg-Osceola. Over 1,000 victories as a high school head coach in girls’ softball and volleyball:

“Gonder’s P-O softball teams won three PIAA titles and finished second twice. His Lady Mounties won 682 games and lost 151. He also posted a 404-145 record as the coach of the P-O volleyball team. He has been honored as the Pennsylvania Softball Coach of the Year and Northeast Softball Coach of the Year, and has been president of the Pennsylvania Softball Coaches Association for over 20 years”

Billy Owens scored 53 in his fourth state championship game.
I was interested to know Billy's career NBA stats. Here they are over his 10 year career, which is a good stretch in the league:
11.7 pts per game
6.7 rebounds per game
2.8 assists per game
Averaged 29 minutes played per game.

So, given how many minutes per game he played, Billy was an above average NBA player who had a good all-around game. Not Hall of Fame #s, but very productive.
His best years were his first five with Golden State & Miami.
