So is this guy "all that"? Or is it just show off noodling?

I'm a horn player and drummer. What I know about playing a guitar wouldn't fill a shot glass.

To my untrained ear, this guy seems like he's got insane chops. I'd never heard of him before. Just happened to stumble across this on youtube.

To echo others, technically he's good (others on YouTube are also). But, overplays, imo, on this song which the original is filled with space and subtlety and impeccable phrasing, not just a blizzard of notes. Transparency: I'm of the BB King school who thought the notes you left out were as, if not more, important than the ones you put in. A guy that plays this much would be hard to be in a band with. Again, he's a much better technician than the average guitar player. But there's a lot more to playing guitar than technical expertise and speed.

A legit talent for sure... but that "busy-ness" doesn't work on a song that is all about space and subtlety IMHO.

Reminds me of flamenco; which is a REALLY tough style to master.

Having said all that, kudos to him; he's super talented!

As a bassist, I will echo the above sentiments. You practice the "insane" stuff on your own so when the time is appropriate you can whip it out. Certain songs and styles tone, phrasing, feel are infinitely more important. My personal opinion is David Gilmour's solos were the perfect blend of masterful technique, soul, appropriate phrasing, etc.

That is what is wrong with a lot of singers these days too. They can't just let their voice stand alone. They do all of these runs to overcome the fact their voice isn't strong enough to hold a note without being off pitch. Today's music is pure crap in pretty much every genre.

Saw Mark Knopfler in concert last year.

let’s just say, that ticket was money for nothing. Dude couldn’t move. He aged terribly and the music selection was self-indulgent boredom.

Dire Straits 38 years ago was an awesome show displaying mastery. Clapton came out and joined in an encore at Radio City.

sad.

Roy Clark was a monster. Different styles but I'd put him up against pretty much any other guitar player. Unbelievably good.
This x1000.

For anyone interested, do a YT search for Roy Clark. I personally like his corny comedy stuff... but it does take away from the fact that his talent is OFF THE CHARTS.

Easily on of the most underrated guitarists of all time.

"Racin the Mule": song starts @ 1:30

He should try to over play this:

Nice right hand there. I couldn’t do that. Not super challenging stuff for his left hand and a little “sloppy” here and there. But, that’s not really a criticism. One of my favorites, Jimmy Page what a sloppy left hand at times (like in the Heartbreaker solo and live) and he’s still among the GOATs.

Yes, dude has serious chops. Playing with the clean tone requires great precision - no hiding any mistakes via distortion (like me, lol!). Yes, he may be over-playing a little, but it’s an instrumental version of the song. What’s he supposed to do, strum chords? I like him showcasing his ability.
