I almost made this same comment myself yesterday. This thread is a bit of a microcasm of one of the things that's wrong with news now.

Hopefully Pardon's finger looks better than the pinkie that belongs to Anthony Munoz.

The one time I was rooting for some fake news...
Seriously, though, this sucks. His impact on defense (blocking shots, changing shots, rebounding) and offense (putbacks, breaking the press) can't be overestimated. This was one of two positions (the other being PG) where we couldn't afford a significant injury, especially since we didn't sign a transfer big man. Let's hope he's back by conference play, otherwise we'll likely be waiting until next year.
PS, I'll be at the game Saturday if anyone wants to say hello.

Another "glass half full" angle: Isn't Pardon left-handed? If so, perhaps that minimizes ever so slightly the impact of the injury long-term.

If he's only out 3-4 weeks, and we're able to win games we should win without him, and especially if we find a way to take out Dayton, then yes, the timing's not so bad especially because Benson could get some much needed minutes. But if this balloons into something bigger, it really stinks. It does either way. I feel for Dererk, and the entire team must be thinking what could possibly be next.

Agree. Barret will get valuable minutes and this will speed his development. He won't in any sense replace Dererk, but this will give him experience for the Cats run to the Tournament in 2018. This was never the year anyway. No matter what ECat believed.

100% agree. I think this provides a much needed opportunity for Benson to develop with minutes he wouldn't otherwise see in both games and practice. Meanwhile, Pardon rests and recovers for B1G play. I think this could wind up making the Cats stronger against conference competition, similar to how Olah's injury last year forced Pardon into the lineup. Only, this one comes at a much better time in the schedule. Hope Benson recovers from this setback well and comes back strong and ready to contribute.

Practices are going to be a problem. NU is down to 9 healthy scholarship players. They are not going to be able to go hard in practice since they will be playing mucho minutes in games.

Pardon was not expected to get experience last year and you can really see the difference. Hopefully Benson does as wll. If Pardon is out 3-4 weeks, back in time for BIG season

Apologies for making the initial post without a second source. I said the surgery was Tuesday when it was today. Still racking up the Medill F's almost 20 years later.

So, if the past is any indication, then we should all expect Barret to log a double-double tomorrow night, right?

Against the height-challenged team that is DePaul-- I believe that they may be the shortest team that we have played thus far-- this may not be all that far-fetched

Don't panic. While the injury is unfortunate, it will give Benson an opportunity to step up and develop. Remember Pardon stepped in for Olah last year and made a huge contribution. Let's give Benson a chance. Next man up. I would not be surprised to see Taphorn spend some time in the middle. He has filled out and looks much stronger this year. Still four weeks until the Big Ten season gets underway. We should be able to weather this storm assuming it is not a season ending injury.

It was obvious that Pardon's. Injury involved his hand and not his finger. The dressing and splint were compatible with a hand injury rather than a finger

We have nine scholarship players on the roster that aren't hurt now? That is a ton compared to Carmody's squads that had usually at most 7. And the nine players are much better than the ones we had playing under Carmody. And Carmody had some years where we went .500 in the big ten! And Collins is a much better coach than Carmody IMHO. All is not lost my friends. We can do this. And what the hell- once we get our players like Rap. going - look out! I do hope Pardon comes back rested and raring to go. This could be a great year for the Cats. And I do believe we can beat Dayton if we show up ready to play.
