Man, the Cats are down to 10 scholarship players as Dererk Pardon will redshirt this season, Collins announced today. Went from being really deep to borderline thin just like that!

Not at all surprised. Seeing him against Quincy showed that he is super raw and could use the year to develop. Clearly a great athlete but skills not quite there yet. I wouldn't have been surprised to hear this about Ash either other than the fact that we are really thin at PG and may need him at times.

Think this move is more about JVZ and the fact that he is ready to give huge, high-value minutes. Neither NU nor Dererk get much value out of Dererk playing two minutes a game. A year ago, he plays 10 minutes a game.

And again, hope that Derek gets at least four quarters of a free NU graduate program under his belt.

agree that this speaks to a confidence in JVZ more than anything else!

By the time the conference begins, Lumpkin or Taphorn will be the eighth player in the rotation. I'll take that.

The Law injury hurts, but like an annoying paper-cut. He was not expected to be our top player. And - there was a bit of a jam at the 3. This allows CCC to really utilize Lindsey, Demps, Mac, Tap and Lumpkin in the Gs and wing spots and not force one of them or Law into the 4. Keeping Pardon on the pine means Skelly will see some time too.

It's too bad Vasser didn't work out. It would have been nice to have a speedy backup PG this year. If he is still enrolled as previously discussed, any chance he works his way back onto to the team?

First of all, Vic was absolutely amongst our top players, if not THE top player.

Second, regarding Vasser, seriously?

Geez...he never said he wasn't "amongst" out top players. Just not our top player...and he isn't...his output thus far hasn't made him so. In potential? Perhaps (though Falzon might have something to say about that). But certainly not output. From a production standpoint, Demps is miles ahead...as well a a couple other players...

I rank Demps the top player for the team, followed by BMac and Olah. Vic is probably tied for 4th with Lindsey, followed by Falzone, JvZ, Sanjay, Tap, Ash, Skelly and Pardon.

Vic brings something to this team that nobody else does. He is THE best rebounder and easily the most athletic and capable guy at the 3-4. With his shooting improvement he was a multidimensional guy who was a real match-up issue for pretty much every team.

Falzon has a huge upside. But it remains to be seen how he will play defensively and when other big guys guard him forcing him to create his own shot. I think the loss of Vic is absolutely huge and people might consider adjusting their expectations without him

I think the point is that the depth on this team, while better than the past, still leaves us vulnerable when one key guy is lost.

As expected - really no need w/ JvZ.

Heck, if the 'Cats weren't so undermanned last season, one could argue that Law and Lindsey could have used a year to bulk up and get used to the college game.
