Very, very sad...something no parent should ever have to deal with. Condolences to all of his friends and family. I didn't know the young man, but have learned this morning that I do know people that did know him and they were very complimentary of him as a person.

Minor, related question...I read elsewhere that he died early Saturday AM, but the OP references Thursday. Was it Thursday?

Another tragedy in the span of week for athletics in the state of Iowa. Terrible.

I know he was in the ER Thursday, as I was in the hospital area at the same time, and the UNI athletic staff were also there. And quite distraught. I do not believe he died early today... Saturday. Either way it doesn't really matter. Gone way way too soon. Edit: yes, unfortunately he passed away Saturday.

Rumor circulating that there was an intense off season workout last week that could have triggered something.

Not trying to stir anything, but just curious if any legitimacy to it.

Since he is so young, I think an autopsy is mandatory.

Why did a 19 year old have a heart attack working out? The parents and his family need to know.

The one good thing is they surely used an AED to try to get his heart beating again.

Enlarged heart? Arrythmia?
Probably. Most common reason for this sort of thing, sudden death in an athlete, is undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Basically where you have an enlarged heart for genetic reasons which messes with the electrical conduction of the heart in a way that can lead to a fatal arrhythmia (ventricular fibrillation). It's the way a number of athletes have died during competition or workouts - Hank Gathers, Reggie Lewis, Miklos Feher, Mark-Vivien Foe.

One of my son's best friends - we are very close family friends. Parker was just an amazing young man - he did everything right. It is just so heartbreaking. I loved that kid like my own son...and now he is gone. WTF does this kind of thing happen? And all the cruel comments online from folks have have no freaking clue about this kid or his family. As a grown man, I haven't cried this much in a long time. He just loved everyone and brought such light to the world. This weekend is gonna be tough!

I really hope and pray there have been no cruel comments regarding Parker's death. At least on this site it all seems to be proper respect for him and his family. And since I visit absolutely no other site, I'm hoping it isn't the case. That would be pretty sad if it was.

Very sorry for your loss. I really hope they did an autopsy so they determined cause of death. That at least helps with closure.
