Pathetic crowd today

Well, I attended my first game in the New Ryan Field today, and it was a great experience. Plenty of food venues, and plenty of beer available.

My wife and I really enjoyed it. We had seats in the lower bowl, which we paid a lot for. I am unlikely to pay that much again, but for our first time in NRF we treated as a special event. I am hoping they find ways to get lower priced single game tickets into the hands of us NU fans.

If they sold 30k for Rutgers, then Iowa and Illinois will be sellouts. Of course, the problem of fans watching in the concourse/club areas will still be a problem.

Crowd was solid. 99% purple. If you haven’t been you really can’t comprehend how many folks are watching from the concourse and club areas rather than from their actual seats. A bit of a double-edged sword in making the venue so terrific.
If this is true, it’s the most lame, NU thing ever. God, get to your seats people.

When the camera scans the fans at field level, particularly the area which is now a club (?), it really does look like a wine and cheese crowd vs the pride of the pig game - or whatever it is called - at Minnesota today. Everybody looks to be having a good time so let it roll!

What if we sold 10k "standing room only" seats"? Those people would hog the area's with the chow and brew and those with seats would say "Aw screw it, I'll just take this food and drink and eat it where I am supposed to be sitting"?

"the fans are on the concourse" is an equally true and bogus excuse. yes, many fans are on the concourse...if you required all of them to go to their seats we still had significant bald spots, including/especially in the student section. it is what it is.

Not in the lower sections…at least from my vantage point. I had an incredible time. Couldn’t care less about empty seats as long as they are sold. 🤷‍♂️

I was there with my two sons and three grandsons…my grandsons jaws dropped when they say the place and despite being from Minnesota, they bought N caps, hoodies and t-shirts! GO CATS!!!!

Just to mention, UCLA is a top 10 team and their crowd against Michigan State was much worse than ours. Maybe these long distance B1G games against non-rival teams are the big issue. I know our crowd is down but we are the smallest school in the B1G and we have not had a history of being a consistent winner. We won’t have the same issue facing Iowa or Illinois.

NU Facebook page says it’s family weekend. Seems like that used to increase attendance. Not today. I wonder if they had cheap ticket packages for parents.

They play at a 100,000 seat stadium an hour from campus.

Iowa will be a sellout and a divided crowd.

Illinois will barely graze 30K.

I do agree the oversized Big Ten Conference doesn't help our cause. There are some freshmen who will graduate not thinking twice about Wisconsin as a "rival" anymore than I care about Washington. Now that the conference is a mile long, it's also an inch deep.

Yep, the staff is extremely hospitable. Fans are encouraged the watch the game from anywhere: we had upper deck seats for Penn St but were able to watch from a comfortable perch about 30 feet from the East side bar, that's when we weren't perusing the restaurants. We had excellent seats about the 7 rows from the field for homecoming, but spent the second half visiting friends in the loft and 200 level. Estimate that at any point, when the game's not close, at least 25% of the crowd is roaming the stadium. It really is quite the experience, regardless the optics. Similar to a warm summer night at the Rate, when fans can be found not in their seats but socializing on the OF concourse. Think the upper deck at Ryan will always reveal empty pockets upstairs

The word of mouth among casual fans in Chicago is really something to behold. Since opening, I've been stopped by like a dozen people when wearing my NU gear, including several bartenders, who ask if Im aware of the New Ryan Field and whether ive been. Hopefully just a matter of time before these casual fans take the opportunity to visit and start attending on the regular. Maybe the Bears moving to Indiana will make the Cats Chicago's team

Ah yes comparisons to the stadium atmosphere of the Rate. The exact counter argument needed to dissolve any fears that our new stadium has a lousy home crowd and atmosphere

The loudest complainers don’t even go to every game. It’s comical.
Sounds similar to the strap one on take. I’m not able to attend games geographically and try to take in one when I can. But I still thought this was a ‘safe space’ where folks could voice their thoughts. Glad to see we have abandoned those p*ssy arse safe spaces.

But then, seems like some people only are willing to validate opinions that they agree with.

Give them to the students. My daughter was bummed because she couldn’t get tickets to the Ball State game. Ball State.

Seriously, I just don’t get it. We keep bringing up the “crowd was pathetic” thread. You can cut and paste the last 25 years of the exact same thing every year with hundreds of theories. I think the solution may be easy. Indiana used to have even poorer attendance than us. But going to the CFP changed all that. So we just have to spend some time as a top 5 team, play a couple of years of CF playoffs, win a natty, and then if we can’t fill the stadium we say, “oh well” and enjoy out natty. QED.

Why do I have a feeling she could have gotten them and is telling her father "oh dad I would have been there I swear but..." and happily went to do her nails someplace on Davis Street.

Relax I am just joshing with you. I think you and I are the last one's from the Big Ten board days. Last of the Mohicans! What a long strange trip....

Peace.

Wait, you were watching on TV?? File this under "you can't make this stuff up". Someone watching on TV complaining about the lack of people in the stands.

I was also watching on TV, from the Cotswolds. He lives in Vietnam. Not all of us can easily get to the stadium.

I get it, totally understandable. But for people that have moved to England or Vietnam, why the infatuation with seats in the stands in Evanston. I'm not losing sleep over it and I'm a STH who lives in Chicago. I would think you would be happy for the team's success.

Once again I was there with my two sons, three grandsons and we had a blast! Sat in section 209 which were amazing seats watching Komolafa coming toward us, Wagoner’s catch, and Chiles putting the exclamation point on the day!
I saw a ton of purple, it was loud, my two 2️⃣ older grandsons thought the entrance of the team was out of this world.
if…no, after we beat the ducklings and tOSU, I promise you the place will be rocking for the game against Iowa and the team down south!

The friendliness of the staff was awesome and that stadium combined with the athletic center is going to bring even better talent!

Missed you Bob. Fly in for a game, you might like the new stadium.
