Paul Finebaum showing some love for the Cats

I don't know how widespread (if at all) the Paul Finebaum show is in Kentucky. Of course he has his TV show most weekday afternoons on the SEC Network.

His show is broadcast on (by far) more Alabama outlets than any other state. His show almost exclusively focuses on sports -- mostly college football, especially the SEC.

He interviews sports personalities and has some eccentric callers. Some are lucid; some just rant.

In the beginning of each football season back in the 1990's Finebaum ranked the SEC football head coaches. He explained that he would always start with Spurrier at #1 and Bill Curry as last.

Though he grew up in Memphis and is a UT grad, he knows which side his bread is buttered. So he is generally pro-Alabama.

Anyway last week when Saban was voted SEC Coach of the Year (and Finebaum LOVES him some Saban), Finebaum said he would have voted for Stoops.

I think it was this Wednesday that there was a caller from Kentucky who asked Finebaum who he picks to win the Tax Slayer Bowl. Finebaum picks Kentucky. "I'm all in on Kentucky."

While still on the phone with the Kentucky caller Finebaum said he visited Kentucky two weeks ago and listened to Coach Cal both on and off the record.

Subsequently Finebaum picks UK to win the NCAA this season.

Phyllis loves him too. He just gives her a hard time.

Yet Finebaum has organized fans to financially contribute to support Phyllis' seriously ill husband.

For those of you who may not be familiar:

Phyllis from Mulga. "Roll damn tide!"

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/11940424/meet-phyllis-tammy-first-ladies-iron-bowl

...and Tammy from Clanton. "War damn eagle!"

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/11/auburn-alabama-iron-bowl-espn-tammy-rant

Most callers are not as...er...emotionally involved as these two.

Yeah, I was a little surprised when Finebaum made very reserved statements after Kentucky's 5-1 start in 2014. Coming off that South Carolina Game, I had about lost my head, as (perhaps) did Barnhardt.

Finebaum was not trash talking UK, but just said stuff like, "well, let's wait and see . . . ."

I like Finebaum, generally, and envy him his position. He loves sports, especially football, and he gets to travel and make a healthy living off of it.

Thanks for the links mktmaker. It was nice to hear Finebaum is helping out Miss Phyllis's husband. I love stories like that. If you want a taste of Miss Phyllis listen to her blast away at Cowturd. "Kiss my butt, Roll Tide"

I have always been firmly in the camp of "We're not going to win respect from the rest of the SEC until we beat some good teams (plural)."

Though I respect the guy, I don't remember Tony Barnhart ever showing respect for the Cats."

If we win our bowl game, we can gradually earn some regional respect. After all, Georgia Tech won their last two games in Athens.

Paul is on most cable networks, have it on Direct TV. Usually says what he thinks, good that he likes Stoops and UK--------not true until recently. Probably more important to me his two ex football player commentators both said you couldn't not vote for Saban but Stoops was second best in the SEC this year. Some other good candidates were out there.

Phyllis is also not a big fan of Danny Kannell.

For the life of me, I do not understand why people like Finebaum. He is the most boring personality I've ever heard in radio or TV. I'd rather drink clorox than listen or watch his show for over an hour.

Some of the funniest comedians in history had that dead pan look and Clorox drinking personality. I have to admit I breaking out laughing just at the site of his face and bald head. He is a hoot to look at. I don't think he knows a thing about athletics. Must have gone to school to be a lawyer or maybe he is a typical UT grad. You never can tell. .

When it comes to talk show hosts, boring is perfect. He's not supposed to carry the show. He directs it. The last thing I want to hear on that type show is some obnoxious, loud mouth idiot like Vitale, blathering on about something completely unrelated to the show's subject matter. I'll take Paul every time.

The guy is a genius. He is like a Cosell in that he is not photogenic but is smart.

20 years ago I despised him because he gave Mumme a hard time-called him coach mophead and it ticked me off because I thought Hal was the man. Hal wasn't the man and Finebaum was right. He is great. He likes Stoops and has had many good things to say about UK!

His show is terrible, but its also a gimmick. The callers are awful but that's his schtick and it appeals to some folks I guess. When he actually quits trying to egg folks on and discusses football with his sidekick (who I actually liked the couple of times I actually gave the show more than a passing glance) he can be insightful and informative. As was said above he knows where his bread is buttered. I'll say it's refreshing to hear a sports radio show actually discuss NFL, college football especially SEC, and the college playoff semi-intelligently instead of talking about the NBA and awful country music, or interviewing dentists and car salesmen.

I never watch a entire show of his. Not a big fan of call in shows but some of his callers can be a riot. The best parts of his show is when he has Booger or the other big LSU DL on and he is also a big fan of Matt Jones of KSR, a name that has strong love/hate issues on this site LOL! He has Matt on at least once a month.

He's arguably the best on tv. All the college basketball and a few college football analysts are outright pathetic.

Ever since Phyllis broke her story of loving UK baskey-ball and Bama football told me more than I needed to know about the extra chromosome in that radio audience. People under the mistaken impression that liking winners makes them winners.

Put Phyllis and Finebaum into a mine cart full of dicks and send em into a volcano
