Surprised nobody has posted any reaction to an absolutely splendid display of wrestling. Great match ups, exciting finishes , tremendous crowd, electric environment and the wacky Brands brothers flailing in disgust as they lost every disputed point. Penn State kids came to wrestle and except for the heavyweight performed as expected. As a fan of wrestling, it was quite a show.

One can only dream that RU can field a lineup like these two programs. Seems we still have a ways to go.

The composure of the PSU guys is unreal. Also, there was a fantastic display of defense with the hips all night. Iowa guys got to the legs a bunch but couldn’t even get close to finishing at times.

Just inquired if anyone had watched in the Mat Town open thread. Did not see all the matches but 174 and 197 were excellent. Sounded like PSU did well in the lower weight and then withstood a run by Iowa in the mid weights. The combination of Starocci, Brooks and Dean is impressive. I was a little confused by the ending of the Starocci/Kemmerer match as I thought they indicated Kemmerer had tied it up but I guess upon review they did not give him the point needed to take it to another round of OT.

Absolutely on point. The Iowa wrestlers would often take an offensive shot only to see a great defensive or counter move by the PSU guy to flip the points. The Kemmerer takedown that was ruled too late was the pivotal point in the match. Penn State’s margin of victory was no indication of how close this match really was.

On the Kemmerer match I agree with the announcer that nothing seemed to change in the last 3 or so seconds so to rule no time left didn’t make sense. Perhaps someone has better insight there.
It was a GREAT overall match. 4 individual bouts came down to the very end and psu won all 4.. 133, 141, 174, and 197 were all razor thin close at the end.
Also Desanto CAN definitely beat rby. Rby did 1 offensive move all day. Nick Lee also could have been beaten, very defensive.

If Dean had lost and it was 5-5 in bouts and his score was 3-2 where it was in the third period Iowa would have won on total points

Warner had that match locked up nearly then got taken down n put in a nasty bow n arrow… Zain must have taught Dean that bc That looked painful, could hear Warner groaning in pain.

Yeah that was brutal to watch. You could see the pain in his face and like you said you literally could hear him suffering through it.

That was an awesome match. The crowd was unbelievable. 17,000 raging fans. What an atmosphere!

Desanto looked great against RBY, even though he couldn't take him down.

I think Rivera can take these two guys at 141. Last year I wasn't sure (and he was still there), but this year is different. BTW, not sure what the hell Eirman was thinking in OT.

It was a very close battle between both teams, but not having Spencer Lee out there, let alone Ayala was a big blow for Iowa.

After the match, they had a special on the Brands brothers. Like them or hate them, they're great for the sport. Two legends. That was a great special. I love their intensity!

ALSO:

Northern Iowa stuns Oklahoma State at Gallagher Arena. It was their first time winning there. OKST didn't have Ferrari, but I'm not sure that would even matter, even if he got a pin. Great weekend for wrestling.

In all honesty, I haven't found a reason to hate the Brands. They are super intense, have a great track record in wrestling,, and every time I see an interview/documentary, I come away thinking this guy is a pretty good coach with compassion towards his wrestlers. I haven't watched the Brands special yet. It's on DVR and I am looking forward to watching it.

Totally agree. I don’t know them beyond what I’ve seen on TV/matches, but they seem like two guys that love the sport of wrestling and truly care about the success of their wrestlers and Iowa. Max respect for those little maniacs LOL!
