Early predictions seem to indicate a strong majority win against SMU, a slight majority win against Boise, and then a crushing defeat to whoever wins between Georgia/Notre Dame. If we beat SMU, we are going to fight the darling of the tournament in Boise. Lot of folks calling the Domers to the championship game, somewhat surprised given the SEC chants. I don't see any reason why we can't win the first two games based on recruiting and depth alone, and then have a puncher's chance against ND/UGA.

This is a double-edged sword.

We got a VERY favorable road in the playoffs. We draw one of the weakest opponents for a first round home game, and if we beat them, we get the Group of 5 representative.

Wow. Hard to complain about that.

BUT... if we lose in the first two rounds, we're gonna look like chumps, and oh, the criticism of our program is going to rain down like flaming arrows!
the venom that is spewing toward us due to the brackets is insane. they are blaming the committee for setting this up, but the committee just ranks the teams. the brackets were set before the rankings. what they are really saying is that SMU and Boise do not belong - others are better. they do not think we deserve to be in #4 position and Childers said this morning we don't belong in the playoff at all.

if we lose to either one, we will be crucified. yet both teams are good teams so anything is possible.

The irony here is that we finished #4 in the committee’s final rankings in the very year they expanded the playoff to 12 teams. After all of those seasons of getting into the New Years Six but falling just short of the four-team playoff, it is when the playoff expands that we finally finish in the top four.
Penn State would not have been selected for a 4-team playoff this year. It would have been Oregon, UGA, and Texas. The choice for the 4th team would have been ND or tOSU. We would have gotten another NY6 bowl, but no playoff.

Defense really needs to get its act together. Liked a suggestion I saw that if holding is not being called put Carter at LB for most of the snaps, or at least move him around more. Might be better able to take advantage of his skills at LB.
you can see the impact of losing some of our players at DT and be worn down in some other areas. I would love to have the team we started training camp with.

Two questions.

1) Who is spewing venom?
2) Who said we don't belong in the playoffs?

Answer to both is the same:
Who gives a $h!t

There is no reason to believe that we wouldn't have been 4th regardless. Then again, everyone was convinced that the committee is biased and was going to put Alabama in, or drop us behind Notre Dame and/or Ohio St. In the end, then did just as I would have expected...and likely would have done the same thing if it was 4 teams.

I care about I why? “We’re better than I” yawn
You keep saying that if we had played Michigan this year we would have lost, because we always lose to Michigan. Put some brainwork into it. Indiana almost always loses to Michigan but beat them this year.

It would have been Oregon and then a wrestling match for two loss Georgia/Texas/PennState. If it fell in the order we have today, the playoffs would have been TWO rematches between 1) Oregon vs 4) Penn State, and 2) Georgia vs 3) Texas

The only reason the old system would drop Penn State from the final 4 is because they would strongly prefer the ratings of Oregon vs NotreDame to a Oregon vs PennState rematch.

Penn State had a better resume than NotreDame this year. And OSU's loss to Michigan sunk them from consideration when they missed the championship game.

If they had the teams but didn’t love the matchups, it would have been much easier to put us at 3 and avoid the rematches.

Franklin has been pretty even with Michigan when they aren’t cheating. And he’s consistently good against teams where we are favored. We would have beaten Michigan this year; I’m disappointed we didn’t play them.

I came to an important realization and decision today. Saying s-m-u is a lot work, and they aren’t worth the effort. They are one word, not an acronym. They are smew.

How healthy will PSU be for the smew game? Any lingering injuries that will keep key players out?
