It's a bit disingenuous to not mention the coin Bassett will be demanding. Will PSU be willing to pony up and how does this fit in with Sanderson's culture?

Lots of chatter about working out….. a quick search……..not sure if this applies.

Rules for Unsigned Wrestlers Working Out at RTCs (Regional Training Centers)
Unsigned wrestlers, especially those considered "prospective student-athletes" (PSA) who have not yet signed a National Letter of Intent, are subject to specific rules regarding their participation in RTC workouts.
Here's a breakdown of the key regulations:
1. USA Wrestling Membership and Qualification:
  • Mandatory Membership: All wrestlers participating in RTC practices must be current athlete members of USA Wrestling.
  • Meeting Qualification Criteria: You must meet at least one of the specific qualification criteria outlined by USA Wrestling for RTC participation. These criteria generally include achieving a certain level of performance in national or international wrestling competitions.
Other rules for unsigned wrestlers at RTCs include considerations for location, high school season restrictions, financial aspects, and limitations on coach/RTC associations. A prospective student-athlete generally needs to live within 250 miles of the RTC, although exemptions are possible. Participation is typically not allowed during their traditional high school wrestling season. Only the PSA or USA Wrestling can pay for a prospect's participation, and RTCs cannot cover travel or competition fees for PSAs. Restrictions also apply to RTC employment of individuals associated with a PSA and college coaches coaching PSAs at competitions unless authorized by USA Wrestling.
RTC rules are reviewed annually by USA Wrestling, and the centers are intended for Olympic development. For detailed information on qualifications or specific rules, contacting the RTC or USA Wrestling is recommended. For more detailed information on Regional Training Center Criteria, refer to the document available on TheMat.com.

It isn't like Penn State doesn't spend money in the NIL sphere for recruiting. I'm not sure why wrestling fans have this negative view when NIL money is spent on recruiting. That's how the game is played, by all top tier schools including our own. It's also unlikely Basset is going to get as much as he was going to get at Iowa. I think it's relatively obvious he wants a better and more supportive training situation above anything else. Will he get paid? Absolutely. Is that somehow indicative of him being a culture problem within the room? I do not think so. Only Cael and company know but the fact they're visiting and continuing to recruit him I'll assume they are not worried about him being a poor culture or room fit.

So, without studying it in detail, it sounds like the Bassett family got mad that Brands decided to follow the rules!

Probably why PSU needs a GM, Steadman, just to invest time in compliance, beyond the NCAA among a host of other things.

I give the Bassetts a ton of credit at development, both as wrestlers and as brand developers ( no pun intended ).

The old saying “haste makes waste” may apply to both sides. It is easy to move too fast when trying to pull together what amounts to a big deal……..while navigating unfamiliar territory.
