Doesn't surprise me.
Yeah. Me either. Back injuries are tricky and normally take time. Especially if it had been lingering to start the year as well and he was having numbness in his legs. Better to try again next season and rehab until then.

That puts a wrap on this season...it's Johnson or bust from here on out. The WR production will be basically nill and we'll see our leading receiver with less than 50 receptions and some feeble yardage stats.

For the future...this really leaves Barker in limbo. These kind of injuries can really always be around. And with a year for Johnson, it really makes 2017 very unstable for Barker. If UK can snag Danny Clark (or possibly Mac Jones)....it makes future even more hazy for Barker.

Do you have to be negative so much ? Don't worry, we'll lose again soon enough then you and MF can start cheering again.
I believe during the last game I was complaining more than anyone on this board about no call facemasks and anything and everything. Obviously cheering for a win. But if you say so capn. And if you didn't get the joke in my original post in this thread, then, well, we'll just let it fly over your head.

Does that give him a medical redshirt?
Well, he already redshirted his freshman year. So essentially this year (his RS soph year) has been flushed down the toilet. After completing his fifth year (2018), I believe he could apply to the NCAA for a sixth season if he chooses to. The NCAA may or may not grant it but in this case they probably would. Someone who knows the nuances of the rule better than I can confirm if what I'm saying is correct.

Really hate to see this for Drew. He was really playing lights out for the first half of the opener against USM. Here's hoping for a full recovery.

Has he had surgery? Does anybody know? I work in navy medicine. Navy seals get 30-40 days off work not including their rehab and physical therapy and they are the toughest men on the planet. Back surgery and injuries are quite lengthy. Ask P. Manning.

I heard a comment today that Drew has been favoring it since the second half of the first game. That could explain some things, you can't perform at a very high level with a bad back.
Remember reading that he was having issues with it during camp too. Sounds like he never really recovered from it.

Derek on HOB says not official source, says if true they will not break the news.
We can hope it's false for his sake and the teams. But obviously it's not "an official source" since it isn't connected to the university in anyway. Still things leak sometimes. Just thought it was interesting that things were swirling.

I've been trying to keep an eye on it to see if it stays up or if any of the players comment on it since several follow the page. No joy so far but it is still up.

In this case, got to have Hoak ready. And can't take him off the chart till we have two wins before AP. He came early for this possibility.

If this is indeed the case then whoever is the most ready is the next guy up.It is either Hoak,Wright or Mattingly someone has been getting 2nd string reps for a couple of weeks. We have an off week to get them as ready as we can.I would think red shirts don't matter at this point

These next two weeks will probably be the most important then any other two week span then any time since they have been here. With the way Johnson has played, they could change to anything that would play to his strengths as a QB. New plays, trick plays, plays never thought of until this week can be done, the sky is the limit and there should be NO way that Miss State can prepare for this. Plus if Gunnar is placed as backup, a game plan should be put into place for him too, so that when we play Missouri, if he replaces Johnson for any reason, they won't have a clue on how Gunnar operates. This staff has a lot to do in 14 days but if they get it done, the offense ought to be able to carry itself for two games and hopefully two wins.

maybe it's a smoke screen so other teams don't prepare for Barker, and then Boom, march him out there....maybe? Wishful thinking

I think that is probably right...but if Johnson is healthy...he plays the Miss St and Mizzou games. And if we lose one of them, then the season is virtually over (outside shot UK can beat UGA...but no shot at all vs. UT/UL)...

So if Johnson makes it thru the next 2 games...we'll know if Hoak is going to RS or not.

Hoak needs to get some game time - just to assist him in case he is needed due to injury et al. Bring him in and let him handle a series or two in actual game - not end of game - but run him in late too if we can ever get a dang lead

lol.. when did we stop sucking in the first place? jk... kinda
Why would you make that type of post when it has nothing to do with the original post. I hope Barker recovers and is able to play and lead the team again next year.

The NCAA seldom grants a request for a waiver of the five to play four rule when a player has taken a regular redshirt. A player has to have missed two seasons for reasons beyond his control. Taking a regular redshirt is not considered beyond the players control.

Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until the Austin P game to do that? If we lose to MSST or Mizzou, there would be no reason other than Johnson being injured. Plus, the AP game we should have a lead.

if you only want him to see action when a game is over....I would throw him in a set or two just to let him "feel" SEC football.....

This is correct. It's possible, but very not easy to get the medical red shirt granted by the NCAA.

I'm not sure that playing Hoak(if he is indeed #2)just for the sake of playing him in mop up minutes is the thing to do. If (hope not) Johnson is injured or dinged up or he is struggling to complete passes in a game we have a chance to win then play whoever is the most ready to give us a chance to win. In previous posts I have said that we need to have a clear #2 guy and be ready to play him if the situation dictates,if that is Hoak don't second guess putting him in just to save the red shirt but don't play him just for the sake of getting him meaningless snaps
