The Miss State game will mark 5 weeks since Barker has played/practiced. If he isn't healed by then on a injury that "doesn't require surgery" he will not return this season.

That puts a wrap on this season...it's Johnson or bust from here on out. The WR production will be basically nill and we'll see our leading receiver with less than 50 receptions and some feeble yardage stats.
Teams will just pack the box with 8 players and dare us to pass the ball. Then again, we are able to drain the clock and give the defense a good few minutes rest between series.

They're called highlights films for a reason. I was always impressed with Phillips and was surprised he never made it here. Injuries, new staff, going up against a KY kid, etc.... were all factors, it seems ......

Jaylen Whitlow's highlight video is also very impressive and he was good enough to start here as a Freshman. "If we had to play today, Jaylen would be the starter", Stoops said in mid-week during Spring practice.....only a few days later, he announced that Jaylen was being switched to wide receiver. How much sense did that make? If Towles was deemed better, then keep Whitlow as a back-up, duh ??? Jaylen left, of course. Now, Towles isn't here, either.....

Well, then, I guess we may as well cancel the rest of the season. Grow some.

Need to activate Gunnar then.
Not sure what you mean by "activate". This isn't the NFL. Stoops has already said Hoak will play if Johnson gets hurt. But Hoak will not turn our season around. He is a fringe top 50 prospect out of the state of Ohio, and he needs the redshirt. If heaven forbid Johnson gets hurt and Hoak gets into a game, it wouldn't take the hit men on this board 10 minutes to start attacking him.

Hoak needs to get some game time - just to assist him in case he is needed due to injury et al. Bring him in and let him handle a series or two in actual game - not end of game - but run him in late too if we can ever get a dang lead
Although unsaid, it appear pretty obvious at this point Barker is out for the year. Even if he is cleared to play at some point he will coming off a very long layoff.

I've always believed the #2 QB needs a few meaningful snaps each game to truly "be ready". Howard Schnellenberger was the only coach I have ever known to actually implement that philosophy, playing his #2 QB in the first half almost every game. There was 1 year where Jeff Brohm took every snap because the #2 QB was a t-FR but that was a somewhat different scenario than what UK is in right now.

IMO, UK must do everything possible to win 6 games this year. At this point they cannot red shirt any player who can them meet that 6 win mark. If Hoak can help them win one game as either a starter or sub they have to do it.

Peace

Csn he get dome eligibility back only playing in few games this year shoukdnt really count. Will he get a medical redshirt etc...? Will he be a 6 year senior since he all ready redshirted ? How does this work? No way this counts under a full scholarship year.

What about the QB from Concy? We need a dang passing game to go with the running game we have. Finnaly have a solid rinning game and passing game goe to crap.

As suspected, Barker is probably done this year....hate it for the young man because with an improving line, he could have had a nice season.

HS competition makes it difficult to evaluate a QB...but Hoak does have good arm strength and pretty good accuracy. Good sized dude as well. I think this is such a critical year we can't afford to RS him. Maybe Stephen can recover from the VU performance, and if he's had wrist problems, that's a mitigating factor for sure. If I were Stoops, I'd use him if Johnson struggles against MSU. Heck, it looks like we might need Gunnar for next year so getting him some experience seems to make sense regardless of whether we're in bowl contention.

I'm reluctant to question anyone English, but I can figure out what you are asking. If your question is about Barker's eligibility assuming he does not play again this year, this question has been addressed in several other threads.

Basically, he would have to request a medical redshirt for this year. He qualifies, so that should not be a problem. However, he also needs a waiver of the five to play four rule. The NCAA seldom grants such a request for a player who has taken a regular redshirt.

And then there is the question of does he want to spend another year in college. By then he, most likely, will have graduated. Even if he wants to go to graduate school he might want to take advantage of the graduate transfer rule and go to another school.

So, bottom line, it's unlikely he get the year back to play at UK.

IMO he should have gotten time vs Bama.....said that weeks ago....play your 2's if the game is out of reach.

“With Drew, it’s a touch too early for that right now. I think we’re in that period that as you mentioned, we’ll evaluate him again. We evaluate him everyday, we look at him and check on him and work with him everyday and he’s in there getting rehab, so we’ll see how it goes in the next week or two. I think he is getting better, but we have been cautious with him and hopefully we can continue to do that and hopefully he’ll feel stronger and strong. You know, it’s still — there hasn’t been anything that’s changed, let’s put it that way. He’s still week to week. We have no plans of playing him here in the Mississippi State game. After that, we’ll evaluate it week to week.”

Come on guys. Did you learn notion from the South Carolina game rumors? Let's find something a little more concrete than imagulliblemoron linkedin account.

No reason to resort to being condescending.

Message boards are for conversations about our team. Nobody ever said it was concrete. Just a conversation piece in a bye week in case you aren't aware what "TIFWIW" means.
That's "take it for what it's workth" achkowledging that it's a less than reliable source but it's interesting that it was floating around out there. Sometimes those things materialize and sometimes it's just good conversation. Usually an "official source" isn't the first place that news starts to come out of.

I say alternate Gunnar with SJIII. We still have a chance to go to a bowl. Need all weapons accessible.

If you want to go to a bowl then leave the redshirt on a freshman qb in close games. Personally I think his skills are what we need for the future but not now.

I just felt it would be good to have a deep threat with a run threat at the same position so they don't load the box. Sorry to not use the correct wording.

This post points out the fact that someone has been getting a lot of work as the #2 QB for an extended period of time,I think Stoops and/or Gran indicated that it was Hoak early in the process,we haven't heard much on the matter since the first week (that I am aware of)

The board seems a bit divided on who should go in if we have to use a #2 guy, whoever it is should and may be more ready than many here think. It is Johnson's job as long as he can go and be somewhat effective, but if we for some reason go to the next guy it is likely Hoak. Thoughts?

The NCAA seldom grants a request for a waiver of the five to play four rule when a player has taken a regular redshirt. A player has to have missed two seasons for reasons beyond his control. Taking a regular redshirt is not considered beyond the players control.

I'm not familiar with Western's QB, which one are you referring to? Only one I see who could possibly be in a sixth year is Tyler Ferguson. However he first entered college in 2012 best I can tell. Thus 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 is only five years.

Looks like six years. From the WKU site: 2015 (GS.): After being granted a medical hardship waiver and a sixth year of eligibility,

Not sure why he was granted a waiver as he took a regular redshirt in 2010.

Wright was a walk-on there with not that strong an arm as I understand.
Yes, but the one shot he got in the spring game he threw a damn good looking ball.....wasn't caught because of a good defensive play but was catchable nonetheless, but he looked calm and decisive in his delivery.

Not sure why he was granted a waiver as he took a regular redshirt in 2010.

Found this explanation of why he was granted a waiver despite taking a regular redshirt year.

"WKU announced today the senior's medical waiver was approved by the NCAA, granting him a sixth year of eligibility after significant knee injuries in 2011 and 2012.

"As you know, Brandon tore his ACL in 2011 in the Indiana State game and missed the entire season and had surgery," WKU athletics director Todd Stewart said. "That actually healed.

"In the summer of 2012, in preparing for the 2012 season, he re-injured the knee. He had to have it scoped and was never able to get healthy again. He missed the 2012 season, minus a couple games, because of that injury. The waiver (filed by associate AD John McCammon) that was filed was sent to the NCAA for them to review. The waiver that we asked for was for the 2012 season."

Basically he was judged to have missed two years due to medical issues. Thus two years beyond his control.
