Pete Nance is progressing just like his brother

"Nance is progressing like his brother, Larry Nance, Jr. (I know this is a Nicholson thread but it has morphed).
Larry Nance, Jr played at that blue blood basketball powerhouse, University of Wyoming. His other offer was Bowling Green. He didn't really click until Junior year. He went from 4 pts/gm freshman year to 10, 15 and 16 after that. Again, against U of Wyoming competition.

Pete Nance is playing against much tougher competition and the curve is tougher. He was a kid in a huge body. Now he is starting to mature and grow into his body. He missed a lot of his freshman year. This is his first full year and he is finally getting it. Next year should be exciting for him.

Love the team for next year. Finally, 2 good players at each position. Finally, depth. When was the last time that happened? Very excited."

Late bloomers rule. Hard to get on college coaches’ radars, but patience can have high rewards
Except Pete had offers from OSU and Michigan. Not like he wasn't on coaches radar in High School.

On potential alone I think Nance was probably closer to a top 25-40 player, but more in the 50-100 range because he played very weak competition and didn't prioritize basketball in high school. Sounds like this off-season was the first time he really focused on getting better and the results so far have been outstanding. If he can get to be a 38% 3 pt shooter and continue to grow into his body, he has all the skills for a stretch big in the modern NBA. Maybe not a star, but certainly could contribute at that level.

I was really referring more to his brother, but even in Pete's case, according to Verbal Commits he attracted most of this attention spring of his junior year. That's relatively late in the process. Even his hometown D1 team didn't offer earlier.

I don’t know if this negativity impacted Larry Nance, Jr’s lack of more D1 offers or not?

I’m not sure how many athletes are playing college sports with this affliction, or something like it.

Speaking from personal experience, there might have been an impact. Not from coaches avoiding him because he has a disease, but because he might not have been as physically mature as others, or might not have been able to play with the energy required.

I'm not saying my son is in the same situation (he doesn't have THAT talent level), but his celiac disease hindered his growth and opportunities until it was diagnosed. He's grown over a foot since diagnosis and is now starting to add weight (he still has a ways to go), and college coaches, AAU clubs, etc are starting to pay attention during his junior year.

The thing was that Pete was supposedly more skilled coming out of HS than his older brother (who is the better athlete of the 2).

Really didn't see those skills on display the past 2 seasons, but coming on strong this year.

It should be of way more recognition that he is also finding way more success because he is being played at the 5, which fits much better to his skillset. CCC has finally allowed one of our highest rated recruits to play at his best position in the modern game. And credit to CCC even if it was a little late (did use some nance at the 5 Lineups end of last year and it was already evident that was his best spot)- plenty of traditional coaches who would never play a guy like him at center.

Then you weren’t watching. The potential and skills were flashed a lot just not consistently shown. It was mostly muscle and head games that kept it back.

His play / foot movement on defense and decision making on offense really seem to have improved this year, based on what we've seen thus far.

A lot often depends on other things going on at the time which the outside viewer does not have insight into. Other guys and roles on the roster, not ready for the position for any of a number of reasons. MAaybe he was slow to develope the footwork needed for the new position. As outsiders, we really don't know

I would bet that he worked on getting better in other seasons as well. Maybe it wasn't as apparent but pretty sure he was working on it. Sometimes it just takes time. And Bigs tend to take more time to develop

Pete admitted in an interview last week that his didn't work on his game before this preseason. Watch the interview and stop speculating.

Nance is playing out of his mind on offense tonight. Shooting, driving, passing. All there in spades.

That is what a future pro looks like. Hopefully, he’ll keep this momentum going.

He's been playing well all season, and this game he was the star for NU. Hopefully it wasn't just him playing out of his mind, but a new level of play that's he achieved.
