Why do you think 4 A is tougher than 5 A? I think Phillips would have beat Rochester easily, Lemont and Sterling both gave them games losing by 12 and 13 points, Morris who is in Sterlings conference and went 7-2 almost beat Rochester. Phillips defense is what wins them games and Rochester wouldn't have had time to throw, and if that stud QB tried running he would have been shut down, they are too quick, Phillips would have rolled running clocks in every playoff game in 4A
Give Morris some credit, but Morris was easily Rochester’s worst performance of the year. Baker was off all night and defense allowed way too many 4th down conversions.

Phillips would running clock 4A just like in 2014 right? Oh wait...

Well then certainly Phillips would running clock 4A just like in 2016 right?! Oh oops

Sterling, Lemont, and Dunlap would have all steamrolled thru 3A & 4A.
Lmao...I think Sterling and Lemont would have been great title game matchups against Rochester in 4A, but Dunlap?! Cmon man.

Oh and since we are talking about public schools able to drop down for some reason, Rochester would have steamrolled thru 1A and 2A. :D

It wasn't about teams dropping down, my point was Phillips beat all 3 but for some reason people keep saying Phillips "ran" from 3A for the easier path of 5A. If that were true, why do they schedule 6A-8A for their nonconference games.

You skipped 2015 and 2017.

Well I am not one of the people who think Phillips ran. I think Phillips is a very good team.

They gave Rochester a solid game in 2014, but their vaulted defense was no match for Derek Leonard’s offense. They embarrassed Phillips D coordinator and he is still obviously salty about it.

Unfortunately Rochester couldn’t get past a very talented Althoff team in 2015 that would have setup an intriguing rematch especially considering how Althoff didn’t even show up for the title game.

2016 Phillips gave it away to Johnsburg otherwise another rematch could have been possible.

If Phillips really wanted a rematch they could have petitioned up only 1 class to 4A this year. I don’t think they were running from Rochester, they just wanted to play up because they seen how much talent they had recruited in the past few off seasons. Same reason they schedule tough non conference games, they know they can compete.

I’m not saying Rochester would have beaten Phillips this year, but give Derek Leonard a week to prepare and you never know.

I’m not going to sit here and say Rochester would steamroll thru entire 5A, but the 5A South was as weak as it’s ever been. I’d take Rochester, Highland, or Althoff to make it out of the 5A South bracket.

Rochester could address Phillips "running away" from competition by petitioning up to 5A. They could petition up to 5A and possibly meet Phillips in the 5A playoffs next year.
They could but I don’t see that happening. Believe they are content to play in their true classification with current rules. I wouldn’t mind them petitioning up when IHSA allows everyone to recruit from a 30 mike radius.

Exactly.. how bad would Rochester destroy Phillips if they could bring in kids from the entire Springfield area???

CATBOX got awfully quiet in this thread.
You said AC “did the same thing” and “hid down in 3A”. How is that the same as Phillips?

I asked you for specifics and you gave me an abbreviated screen quote from someone else. I could only read a few lines because it was cut off.

That's is very impressive. Reminds me of the 2011/2012 Aurora Christian team that had these players on it.

Joel Bouganon RB NIU (Was with the Chicago Bears)
Chad Beebe WR Starts for NIU now.
RJ Morris OL Ohio State
Anthony Maddie QB started for NIU last year
Brandon Mayes DB NIU/Western IL.
Can't remember their kicker but he kicked at Oregon
Plus they had 6 others that went on to play Div. 2

You had 12 scholarship level kids including some transfers on a 3a team. How is that playing in a class to your ability?

Just a guess but I think mc140 was insinuating that AC brought in a ton of talent, some key players being all state level transfers, then proceeded to bludgeon the farm teams in 3A

Only a few kids transferred in (Maddie, Morris). Bouagnon was only there senior year 2012 and his family made the move. Majority of the athletes were there since freshman year, junior high and even grade school.

I don’t think it is hiding in 3A when the school was multiplied UP by the IHSA to 3A. If the school were 1/2A non-multiplied and chose to stay in 1/2A with a loaded team like that, I would 100% agree with you, but they were multiplied up to 3A.

Morris is big and fast. It's hard to play well when the defense is getting in the backfield. No other team this year held them to under 30. They didn't do well with the pressure.

They had 6 starters out and one of them being the Quarterback. They should have been undefeated but the injuries took their toll for those 2 games.

I don't understand though how there is a multiplier for catholic/private schools that can "recruit" within a 30 mile radius, but not for a school that can recruit within the 3rd largest city in the Union?

I'm not saying either is right or wrong, but is it not a double standard? Phillips can have a quarterback from Lakeview and a tight end from Beverly.

(Braces for impact)
