In the interest of something to discuss on this dead board, who would you put on your All-Time Iowa lineup? Have to take some liberties with changes in weight classes, but here's what I've got:

125: Spencer Lee. Hard to imagine leaving Barry off this team, but Spencer is that guy.
133: Tom Brands
141: Mark Ironside
149: Brent Metcalf (might be controversial)
157: Jimmy Z
165: Joe Williams next topic
174: Royce Alger
184: Chris Campbell (wrestled 177 in college, but won all his medals at 90kg I believe, so calling him a 184 for this)
197: Ed Banach (similar to Campbell, but wrestled 190 his last year and internationally at 90kg, so he's a 197 now)
Hwt: Lou Banach

Thoughts? Am I close?

Lincoln or TJ Williams maybe 149 only won it once at 149 but had 1 loss

Yep, you're close. Tough to leave out Randy Lewis, and Lincoln Mac is a no-brainer. lb for lb Joe Williams is the most badass Hawk there ever was IMO. He sleepwalked to 3 Titles.

Yep, definitely LewBoo too, not to mention Terry.

Call me crazy, but I think Metcalf beats McIlravy if they meet in their respective primes.

Love watching old clips of Joe Williams. Such an incredible athlete.

You're crazy :). Actually I think it's relatively close but LM was just a bit better based on his overall collegiate and post collegiate career. Olympic bronze, world silver and world bronze, he was legit top 3 in the world for a decent stretch... Brent never reached that level with any consistency and I think the small talent gap between them is the reason. I'd say Lincoln wins 7-8 out of 10 matches between the two of them.

Premature but current 184 with a healthy career is in the mix in 4 years.

My list is different as I have only watched Iowa wrestling the last 13-14 years.
125 - Spencer
133 - Ramos
141 - Eierman
149 - Lugo
157 - Young
165 - Marinelli
174 - Kemerer
184 - Angelo
197 - Buchanan
Hwt - Cass

I was debating between Bull and Mikey. Mikey finished higher but Bull won 4 B1G titles.

I'll keep an eye on this thread as I'm curious what you guys think. I get Brands, Banachs, Williams are all legit. I need to read up more on Iowa wrestling 70s-00s.
I know names but not accomplishments.

Good list. I was never impressed with Young although that takedown in Minny was a thing of beauty. I would put St John in for Young. Id also take Cali over Bull but like you say that's a close call.

I was there for that. So awesome. Goofs thought they had a score coming and Young tossed him. Thing of beauty.
I didn’t know who else to put at 157.

Good stuff! Those are some bad hombres. Gotta give Campbell his medals though--world gold in 81, then a decade later takes vacation time from his lawyer job without telling anyone and wins world silver in 90. Capped off with Olympic bronze at age 37 in 1992! He is probably my favorite Hawk of all time. Such a technically brilliant wrestler, super interesting and intelligent guy, and Gable said he was the most talented wrestler he ever coached. Doesn't get enough appreciation imo.

Based on fan involvement and sheer entertainment value, not accolades:

125 Davis (pace and ability to get the crowd fired up)
133 T Brands (Either one, brutal and punishing)
141 Lewis (maybe the most gifted to ever wear the black and gold)
149 Metcalf (pace, and violence, played the bad guy role to perfection)
157 Linc (another SD talent, Like Lewis maybe one of the best all time, could stack up points quickly)
165 Jimmy Z (What he did to Nate Carr in the dual cements Jimmy as a legend)
174 Brinzer (a punchers chance from any position)
184 Royce/Rico (I couldn't decide, Royce through sheer brute strength or Rico because of flash and style. Both pinners, the fall guy and the butcher)
197 Banach (pinner, if we were within 12 going into 190 we still had a chance!)
HWT Banach (In my opinion a very under rated HWT historically, remember he was at times wresting guys 200 lbs bigger, also a pinner!)

If we're using current weight cutting rules, etc, I think you guys are counting on people at the wrong weights.

I would go:

125: Spencer Lee
133: Randy Lewis (Terry Brands second team? Barry Davis maybe?)
141: Tom Brands
149: Brent Metcalf
157: Lincoln McIlravy (TJ Williams second team)
165: Jim Zalesky

That is an absolute monster lineup. Could any other program compete? OkState has so much history, they probably could. PSU has been so ridiculous lately and just added 4xers and even a 5xer. Would be interested to see what their absolute best rosters would look like...

174: Starocci/Ruth/Nickal

197: Nickal/Brooks/Davis/Wright

Iowa mops them up at the first 3 weights, but, from 149-197 PSU is absolutely stacked...

Good calls. I drew a blank on 141, for some reason. Also, shame on me for Brooks. They are just so ridiculously stacked from 174-197 that I brainfarted there...

I’ll take Mcllravy, Zalesky and Williams all day, and you guessed it, twice on Sunday. Mcllravy matches Nolf technically, he wins late. Taylor improved markedly after college. Zalesky by 3 in college. Star wouldn’t sniff a TD against Williams, Williams 4-1. This is using the 3 pt. TD.

Good calls. I drew a blank on 141, for some reason. Also, shame on me for Brooks. They are just so ridiculously stacked from 174-197 that I brainfarted there...
It's nuts to leave a 4x off the list, but I'm not sure I would take Brooks over Nickal or Ruth in their primes, and not sure where else you can put him. Really hard to compare them all at their various weights. Might have to leave CStar out even.

The more I think about it, I'd probably go with some combo of Ruth/Nickal/Brooks at 74-97, with CStar as first alternate.
