Must be the bag.... just don't get how some of these mid majors have a chance at a major D1 program and end up elsewhere.

They are spending on football. Guess they're going to get into basketball too?
Yeah. SMU is a mega rich private school. Go look at some of their alumni, the “pony express” in the 80s is the tip of the iceberg. Now that pay for play is legal, they’ll be a top 25 program across any sport the donors want them to be

I've said it before in other threads. Anymore it's not history, tradition or how many championships you have recruiting kids anymore. nil has brough more players into the game. It used to be the best of the best would go to the blue bloods, but now they go to whoever can write the fattest check. That's why there's more competition for recruits than there used to be.

In the short term I agree but long-term how willing are boosters gonna be to cut a check for a player when the results aren’t there? At some point boosters will get tired of paying a kid $2+million dollars only to miss the tournament.

SOME of these guys dont want to get shutdown in the tough SEC. They want the best rate and school where they can pad their numbers and raise their stock. Can’t really blame them.

I think exposure and playing on the big stage is important as well. Most mid major guys transfer to a big program. This decision is odd.

I don't disagree that this won't evolve over time into something else entirely.

Yep, that big Dallas money.

SMU has already stated that they are committed to rebuilding the football program at any cost, so I guess the same extends to basketball too. In the age of pay for play there isn't a better example of irony than one of the only program in history to get the death penalty for paying players.

It’s easy to forget because of how unnatural it still feels, but SMU is an ACC team now. He’ll get enough exposure there if he’s actually good.

Glad he went somewhere that won’t hurt us or we play him. Big Dallas money probably offered considerably more than the other teams.

Ole miss and Arkansas are reaching desperate territory for a scoring guard
We aren’t quite in that spot but we are in desperate territory for a SG as far as being able to compete for a title. Wilkerson is a must have.

Exactly. I thought this since the beginning. Boosters will only keep giving their money with no results/titles for so long before they stop. It’s the big reason the current system isn’t sustainable. The high end guys should be around a million at the very most. Even that’s alot to expect boosters to shell out year after year.

Now if you’re winning a title or two then boosters will be happy to keep paying but there’s no way I’d keep pumping large amounts of money into the schools NIL if I were a big booster and only getting S16’s/Elite 8’s out of it.
