-my dad says this was his favorite desert growing up.
Seems people that grew up Depression Era or WW2 war time rationing did that. They tend not to ever throw anything away ,thinking it could be some use later on.

Beans cooked with ham hock.
Chow chow (diced raw onion if chow chow unavailable)
Collards with ham hock/onion/garlic/smoked paprika
Cornbread (with buttermilk available to crumble remaining cornbread in for the next day or for a later snack.
Fried taters & onions and/or fried cabbage are excellent sides as well.

Damn, I’d love to have some milk and cornbread right now. Preferably fried cornbread. I can eat that stuff straight out of the skillet.

Diced onions and a ton of Louisiana hot sauce or Sriracha in a pinch.

I can't eat cornbread without comparing it to my grandma's. I liked getting it while it was still hot and pouring dark Karo syrup on it. That was like a dessert.

Beans with crumbled buttermilk cornbread (not that stuff with sugar, eggs and flour) and hot chow chow relish, fried potatoes and green onions.

One of my coworkers would make me chow chow. I love hot and spicy but I **** you not one tablespoon full for a pot of chili was about all I could take..Hottest chow chow I ever had. She since has passed and I have not found anything close to what she made for me..

My wife's aunt used to give us a jar or 2 every year. It wasn't real hot but it was delicious. We don't see her anymore so we usually buy it from the store now but you are right it isn't as good.

What else have you tried it on besides in beans and chili?

What is a good commercially available chow chow brand?

High school cafeteria (way back yander) always had grilled cheese sandwiches with their pinto beans.

I almost always have Glory turnip greens (found in Walmart) with my pintos. Give it a try.

I agree on any Amish or Mennonite stores. Mrs Campbells isn't bad. We usually pick it up at Wal Mart.

Sometimes I will substitute the cornbread. Take a piece of white bread, pour beans over it, add another piece of bread on top of it, pour more beans. It is really good and a nice change up from beans and cornbread. It just depends on my mood.

Spicy craving : Red beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage cooked up in it. Not easy on the indigestion, but damn tasty.

I am wanting to do some beer bath brats (which I have never tried) and put some chow chow on them.
