All leagues have their perennial bottom-feeders. As an example, NFL has consistently dysfunctional franchises like the Jets, Raiders, Browns, Bengals, Dolphins, and Cardinals, to name a few. Granted, the Jets, Raiders, and Dolphins have past gravitas, but it's well in the rearview mirror.

Now, granted, "college" football isn't like the NFL in that there isn't a "National College Football League" - rather, the individual conferences have their own agreements that cover revenue sharing and TV contracts.

Would the B1G kick out, say, Rutgers, Maryland, and Northwestern because they're not "pulling their weight?" I doubt it; I think there would be a push for unequal revenue sharing first (which essentially deep-sixed the Big 12 - caution is advised). And, lesser schools can now point to Indiana as the shining example of a college FB program that really can pull themselves to the top from the bottom.
I think we are going to see several reorganizations. There won’t be enough money to support those not competing at the highest level. Probably not short term, but we will see teams kicked out of conferences. It’s not a college sport anymore

Just a guess that behind the scenes there was pressure to move in with the Steelers to help with stadium funding. Foolish because they should have learned from the fiasco that Gopher football became. In big part due to moving to an on campus stadium (with the Twins as well) to help the Vikings get a new stadium that was known as the Metro Dome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubert_H._Humphrey_Metrodome Most Gopher football fans call those years the wilderness years.

Stupid to follow our example.

I remember the joke at the time when Pitt demolished their stadium was basically "what program intentionally tries to become Temple?" I don't know what land is realistic to use, but Pitt would benefit from having their own stadium on or near campus.

They could use Tartan Field. It's close and would look full.

Rutgers and Northwestern aren't going anywhere. See the TV money. Even a Super League includes both of them.
How is losing 78 million a year sustainable for Rutgers? There over a half billion dollars in debut since joining the B10. Crazy.

Most of us Gopher fans thought the same of our administration. They were swayed by the NFL, Vikings owners, and Downtown big business guys. This was in addition to the board of regents being too cheap to pay for renovations.

The student section is just now starting to be what it used to be at old Memorial Stadium. Glad that era is behind us.

And the networks will pay for volume and trust that their hype can overcome any lack of quality.
More nuanced than that. Big Ten plays roughly 120 home games a year. Fox, CBS, and NBC/Peacock contract to pick and choose 65-70 of them. The remainder are relegated to BTN.

It's also not that Big Ten games take up all of the broadcast hours that those networks devote to college football. Fox and, to a lesser extent, CBS carry games of other conferences. It's not pure volume.

If pitt somehow gets their own stadium you can bet that they will fund it with taxpayer money. They have no fan base and no source of money. That's why they have a horrible team. No NIL money to distribute. pitt needs to face the music, fire Narduzzi to shed his exorbitant salary, and join the same league as Robert Morris and Point Park. They need to stop pretending that they are in the same league as the big boys and accept that their football (and basketball) program is dead.

That's where we disagree...the networks need volume not just quality.
With respect to inventory, maybe this leads to an EPL scenario. There are so many minor providers of live football content now. Pick the same number of teams like the NFL for a Super League. Everyone else works to play up and everyone at the top plays not to be relegated. The money ebbs and flows.

Public funding wouldn't be very likely in today's atmosphere. PSU is doing a $700 million (for now) reno with no public funding. If Pitt cries poverty to the General Assembly, they'd likely be told, "If Penn State can do it themselves, so can you". There wouldn't be much appetite to spend hundreds of millions of dollars just so Pitt has a place to play seven Saturdays every year.

Pitt has always gone to the public trough.

To all those saying that the have-nots are doomed to their fate, I have a one word response: Indiana.

This may be why Rooney hired Mike McCarthy. He will take up most of a full section by himself. The dude is really big.

Anyway...

Not to mention the bluebloods carrying the conferences; why should OSU/PSU/Michigan/etc. share revenue with Purdue and Rutgers? They see ND and ACC schools taking all the money for themselves and IMO that's where it's at.

Northwestern has a bunch of well heeled donors so they're good for as long as those folks continue to pony up.
You need someone to lose. That why a small 20 team super league will never happen. Do you think 100k going to show up for a 2-10 Penn state? Why do you think they are pushing to expand the playoffs? The more teams that make the playoffs the more that get to brag about to raise money.

I guess but NFL does just fine with 32.

Pitt to hold graduation at Acrisure. This way if someone hijacks the sound system, the noise can be heard all over Pittsburgh.
